Biodiversitas 23: 5744-5751. Conservation is one of the efforts to conserve marine life and provide opportunities for an ecosystem to recover. One of the water areas protected by the community is Pulau Weh (Weh Island). In 2010 and 2016, coral reef ecosystems in the waters of Weh Island suffered a lot of damage due to the pressure from nature, i.e., the bleaching phenomenon. As a result, the benthic experienced a vacuum of the substrate. The emptiness of the substrate occurred due to the death of corals and the appearance of a layer of grass algae. Therefore new corals were difficult to recover without a solid and conducive substrate. Hence, this study aims to measure the resilience of corals and benthic conditions inside and outside conservation areas on Weh Island. Benthic data collection used the Point Intercept Transect method while measuring the potential resistance of corals using the resilience index through coral cover, fleshy seaweed, and rubble indicators. Benthic conditions were viewed based on the value of the results of the resilience component with the condition of the coral cover. The result showed that coral reef ecosystems inside and outside the Pesisir Timur Pulau Weh (PTPW; East Coast of Weh Island) conservation area had a high level of resilience (with scores ranging from 3 to 6, out of 6 for benthic condition scores). The benthic inside the conservation area averagely has a good score and it is likely to be in the recovery period from disturbances. While the score for the benthic outside the conservation area is only 3 (out of 6 for benthic condition scores), which indicates that the area is very vulnerable to disturbance even though it has a chance to recover. If there is another bleaching phenomenon in the future, corals that have just tried to recover in this vulnerable area may be damaged again and the coral cover will be decreased.

Diversity amphibians and reptiles at Sungai Kerteh mangrove forest, Terengganu, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 23: 5574-5584. Malaysia has various ecosystems, including mangrove forests, that can support a rich number of amphibians and reptiles. However, amphibians and reptiles remain understudied, especially in mangrove forests. The main objective of this study was to determine the diversity of amphibians and reptiles in the mangrove forest of Sungai Kerteh. The sampling was conducted from 19th until 21st August 2019 by using the Visual Encounter Survey (VES) method along 2 km2 area of Sungai Kerteh. A total of 53 individuals were recorded belonging to 12 species (5 amphibian species and 7 reptile species). For amphibians, three families were recorded, with the family Dicroglossidae being the most abundant, with 13 individuals. For reptiles, eight families were recorded with the family Agamidae being the most abundant with 18 individuals. Fejervarya cancrivora (11 individuals; Family Dicroglossidae) was the most abundant amphibian species, while Leiolepis belliana (14 individuals; Family Agamidae) was the most abundant reptile species. There was no significant difference between the diversity of reptiles (H’: 1.6975) and amphibians (H’: 1.2643) (t: -1.6835, p>0.05). This study provides the first checklist of amphibians and reptiles species that will be helpful in identifying existing herpetofauna species and possible endangered or rare species in the Sungai Kerteh mangrove forest, which will help contribute to the conservation efforts of the herpetofauna in this area.

Abstract. Putra AW, Priawandiputra W, Litaay M, Atmowidi T. 2022. Comparison of shallow water soft coral (Octocorallia) diversity and distribution among three islands in Makassar Strait, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5951-5961. There are only a few soft coral research in Indonesia. In the last ten years, there has been only seven published research. On the other hand, there are still many areas that are still unexplored, and every unexplored location has a chance to find a new species, thus we did this research. This study aims to conduct biodiversity research in the selected areas where soft corals biodiversity papers have never been published before. The distribution of soft coral in three small islands in Makassar strait and close to Sulawesi main island is reported in this paper. We hope that there is a correlation between the soft coral community in each researched island. The research was done by using a modified visual census method with 50 meters transect in the shallow water area (approx. 5 meters in depth). The data was collected by diving, sampling, and capturing images of each species found. Identification was made by comparing morphological characteristics using the book soft coral and Sea fans by Fabricius and Alderslade and newest papers about soft coral. In total, there are 41 species belonging to 14 genera and eight families found in this research. There is not much correlation between these three islands' soft coral communities. Every island had its key species based on the characteristics of the underwater habitats. The genera Acrossota and Dendronephtya only occur in Barrang Caddi Island, while, Cladiella, Clavularia and Xenia were only found in Gusung Toraja Island, and Anthellia and Heteroxenia were only found in Pannikiang Island. The genera Litophyton, Lobophytum, Sarcophyton, and Sinularia were found in all three researched islands. The south side of every island has the highest species abundance compared to the North, West, and Eastside.

Abstract. Wirnoyo, Lukman AH, Nurliana S. 2022. The species diversity and composition of seedlings for degraded land rehabilitation in different phytogeographical regions in Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5771-5781. Forest clearing and conversion into cropland without implementing conservation measures have caused land degradation. The total area of degraded land in Indonesia is 14 million hectares. The responsible institution for land rehabilitation in Indonesia is Balai Pengelolaan Daerah Aliran Sungai dan Hutan Lindung (Agency for Watershed and Protection Forest Management), abbreviated as BPDASHL. This study aimed to analyze seedlings' species diversity and composition for degraded land rehabilitation provided by six BPDASHLs located in different phytogeographic regions, i.e., Sunda Shelf, Wallacea, and Sahul Shelf. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to BPDASHL offices in Papua, West Papua, Gorontalo, Bangka Belitung Islands, Riau, and Aceh. They were analyzed to determine the species richness, indexes of species diversity, equity, and similarity. The clustering of sites based on species composition was done using a dendrogram. This study found that the species richness of seedlings in each site ranged from 25 to 47, the diversity index of Shannon from 2.39 to 2.96, and a Simpson diversity index from 0.80 to 0.94. The species composition differed from one site to another, with similarity indexes of Bray-Curtis and Jaccard of < 0.35. The dendrogram separated western Indonesia (Sunda Shelf) from eastern Indonesia (Sahul Shelf and Wallacea), except for Bangka Belitung Islands, which was clustered in eastern Indonesia despite its location in western Indonesia. Three study sites had more native dominant species, while the other three had more introduced dominant species. We recommend that more native species of seedlings should be provided.

The influence of fermentation using marine yeast Hortaea werneckii SUCCY001 on antibacterial and antioxidant activity of Gracilaria verrucosa. Biodiversitas 23: 5258-5266. Gracilaria verrrucosa is producer of agar, a polysaccharide, that widely used in pharmaceutical and food industries. However, several studies have shown that the secondary metabolite of this seaweed is not potential as an antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of methanolic extract of G. verrucosa after fermentation using marine yeast Hortaea werneckii SUCCY001. The samples were fermented based on different optimization times, specially in three, six and nine days. Samples were extracted using methanol by maceration method. Then the extracts were tested for antimicrobial potential against the several human clinical pathogens namely Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antioxidant potential was analyzed using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydracyl (DPPH) and 2,2-Azinobis 3-ethyl benzothiazoline 6- sulfonic acid (ABTS) method while total phenolic content (TPC) was measured using Folin-Ciocalteu. Secondary metabolites were characterized using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and GC-MS. TLC plate visualization using UV light, DPPH, FeCl3 and vanillin-sulfuric acid  reagents. The results showed that the extract fermented for nine days was able to inhibit the growth of P. aeruginosa and M. luteus at a concentration of 2 mg/mL. The highest antioxidant activity was found in the nine days fermented extract with an RSA value of 21.9% ± 0,0001 for DPPH and 12.53 % ± 0.002 for ABTS. Furthermore, the highest total phenolic content was found in the nine days fermented extract of 7.57 GAE/mg. The results of characterization using TLC showed the presence of phenolic compounds, terpenoids and antioxidants in fresh seaweed extracts, autoclaved fresh seaweed, three days of fermentation, six days and nine days. Based on this research, it can be seen that the addition of marine yeast starter H. werneckii SUCCY001 was able to increase the antibacterial and antioxidant activity of G. verrucosa.

Variation in leaf characters and agronomical traits of Yard-long bean genotypes between Dimocarpus longan and Psidium guajava stand. Biodiversitas 23: 5752-5758. Yard-long bean (Vigna unguiculata subs. sesquipedalis) is one of the most familiar horticulture crops. Leaf characteristics such as trichomes, stomata, and chlorophyll content correlated to other traits that influenced tolerance under sub-optimum conditions and component production traits. This study aimed to evaluate the leaf characters and agronomical traits variations of the Yard-long bean genotypes. The study was conducted by Split-plot design, with the primary factor were shading between Psidium guajava and Dimocarpus longan Lour. stand. The sub-plot was seven genotypes of Yard-long beans. Analyses were performed of multiple components, including the density of trichome, density of stomata, chlorophylls, carotenoids, nitrate reductase activity, flowering times, harvesting times, and production components under shading conditions between D. longan and P. guajava stands. The density of trichome, density of stomata, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, and Nitrate reductase activity showed the variability responses for each genotype in different shading conditions. One genotype showed early flowering in shaded conditions between D. longan than in shaded conditions between P. guajava. Two genotypes have the potential to adapt under shade conditions between D. longan. The morpho-agronomic characters that have been characterized may be used as potential donors for future hybridization programs to develop superior yard-long bean varieties.

Abstract. Azizah R, Rachmawati D. 2023. Physiological resistance responses of rice plant (Oryza sativa) provided with silicate fertilizer to sheath blight disease (Rhizoctonia solani). Biodiversitas 24: 3785-3795. Sheath blight disease that is caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Kühn generally leads to the reduction of rice yields. The application of silicate fertilizers can increase the resistance to pathogens. This research aimed to determine the effect of silicate fertilizer application on the physiological resistance responses of rice plants to R. solani, the primary pathogen responsible for rice sheath blight. This study used three rice cultivars with different resistance levels to sheath blight, including Pandan Wangi (resistant), Cisadane (susceptible), and IR64 (moderately resistant), which were treated with three doses of silicate fertilizer 0 kg ha-1, 200 kg ha-1 and 400 kg ha-1 with sheath blight inoculation and without inoculation. The results showed that Pandan Wangi provided with 200 kg ha-1 silicate fertilizer produced the highest reduction in the percentage of relative lesion height (RLH), and the application of 400 kg ha-1 silicate fertilizer had a greater positive effect of reducing the lesion in Cisadane and IR64. In susceptible and moderately resistant cultivars, Cisadane and IR64, higher doses of silicate fertilizer have a better effect on strengthening plant tissue during inoculation treatments. The application of 400 kg ha-1 silicate fertilizer without inoculation significantly affected relative water content. In the moderately resistant cultivar IR64, the silicate fertilizer played a role in the physiological response by strengthening the plant tissue, as indicated by the increasing lignin content, sclerenchyma and cuticle thickness.

Phylogeny and taxonomic status evaluation of Dark-sided Narrow-mouthed Frog, Microhyla heymonsi, (Anura: Microhylidae) from Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1092-1103. Microhyla heymonsi (Dark-sided narrow-mouthed frog) was once known to be widespread along the continent of Asia from Taiwan to the mainland of east and southeast to Nicobar Islands and Sumatra. Recent studies identified that this species is cryptic species consisting of M. heymonsi itself and several newly described species, i.e., M. daklakensis, M. heymonsi, M. nakkavaram, M. ninhthuanensis, and the possibility of unnamed lineage. In Sumatra, M. heymonsi is not only distributed from the north to south of the mainland but also in the adjacent islands in Nias. Regarding the taxonomic status of Sumatran population, here we used molecular and morphological data to evaluate the taxonomic status of the Sumatran M. heymonsi. The phylogenetic analyses show that the Sumatran M. heymonsi is closest to M. nakkavaram and strongly supported as a member of subgroup M. heymonsi along with other recognized species, i.e., M. daklakensis, M. heymonsi, M. nakkavaram, and M. ninhthuanensis. The morphological assessment of Sumatran M. heymonsi shows that they are suitable with the morphological characteristic of M. nakkavaram. Both molecular and morphological data strongly support that Sumatran M. heymonsi is identical to the M. nakkavaram from Nicobar Islands. Our results expanded the distribution of M. nakkavaram, not only in Nicobar Islands but also in Sumatra and its adjacent islands. In addition, the phylogenetic tree showed the supported clade of Nicobar and Sumatran M. nakkavaram as sister taxa of the possibly undescribed species from Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia. Further study of this undescribed species is urgent.

Anthropogenic impacts and coral bleaching due to rising sea surface temperature have been severe and often, as of late on the worldwide scale, influencing the composition of coral reef benthic communities from coral to algal-ruled reefs (phase shift). In any case, coral reef phase shift does not continuously happen, considering corals can recoup when stressors occur. This considers points to examine the alteration in coral reef benthic communities and the relationship among benthic categories. The study was carried out in 2018 and 2021 at 10 stations within East Sumba, and East Nusa Tenggara. Underwater photo transect (UPT) was used to examine benthic cover at a depth of 6 to 9 m in reef slope. The result demonstrated that the benthic communities were slightly altered, especially hard coral, sponge, and other biotas. A slight recovery of hard coral cover is shown in 2021, followed by the decline of sponge and fleshy seaweed cover, which is shown in most observation sites. Acropora spp., Seriatopora spp., and Stylophora spp. were the three genera that increased in cover. The study also found the relationship between the benthic gradient and species richness and the number of colonies, which is gradient changes in benthic composition were in line with the change in hard coral species richness and colony numbers. Although hard coral increase significantly changes over time, it's not altered the coral communities.

Abstract. Huong PV, Cuong LV. 2022. The ecological interaction between endangered, precious and rare woody species in rich forest community: A case study in Tanphu protection forest, Vietnam. Biodiversitas 23: 6119-6127. The present study was conducted to explore the ecological relationship between endangered, precious, and rare tree species and other woody tree species in the rich forest in Tanphu protection forest, Southeastern region, Vietnam. Thirty 2500 m2 study plots (50 × 50 m) were established in the rich forest in Tanphu protection forest. The results revealed that: the rich forest comprised 38 species of woody trees, in which Dipterocarpus alatus Roxb was the dominant species, Shorea guiso Blume, Shorea roxburghii G.Don and Vitex ajugiflora Dop were co-dominant species; Afzelia xylocarpa (Kurz) Craib, Dalbergia oliveri Gamble ex Prain, Pterocarpus macrocarpus Kurz and Dalbergia cochinchinensis Pierre were four endangered, precious and rare species. In the study area, the eight pairs of species viz. D. oliveri - D. alatus; A. xylocarpa - D. alatus; A. xylocarpa - S. guiso; D. cochinchinensis - D. alatus; D. cochinchinensis - S. roxburghii; P. macrocarpus - D. alatus; P. macrocarpus - V. ajugiflora and P. macrocarpus - S. guiso were positively correlated; while two pairs of species were negatively correlated viz. S. guiso - D. oliveri; S. guiso - D. cochinchinensis. Hence, the findings from this study suggested that when choosing plant combinations, the first priority has to be the species that were positively correlated with endangered, precious, and, rare species, and to avoid the selection of negatively associated species.
