Soil organic matter and nitrogen in varying management types of coffee-pine agroforestry systems and their effect on coffee bean yield. Biodiversitas 23: 5884-5891. Coffee cultivation in agroforestry systems is mostly planted without soil fertility management. While there are several management interventions to improve soil quality in agricultural practices, it is not clear whether particular treatments, such as adding organic fertilizers and nitrogen fertilizers could increase coffee production in agroforestry settings. This study aimed to analyze soil organic matter and nitrogen in varying management types and its effect on coffee bean yield in a coffee-pine agroforestry setting in East Java, Indonesia. We evaluated four types of coffee management (treatments) namely: (i) no management, (ii) pruning coffee plant branches, (iii) a combination of pruning and addition of fertilizers with a planting distance of pine trees of 3 x 2 m, and (iv) pruning under pine trees with a planting distance of 6 x 2 m. The soil organic matter, total and available soil nitrogen were measured at 0-0.2 m and 0.2-0.4 m soil depths. We measured coffee bean yield to 100 coffee plants per plot. The coffee bean yield in the no-management treatment reached 376 kg ha-1, while the yield under the other three treatments increased up to 3.9 times compared with no-management. This increasing coffee bean yield did not correlate with soil organic matter in topsoil, with a correlation between coffee bean yield and total ant available soil nitrogen being positive and negative, respectively. We concluded that the limitation of N in the coffee-pine agroforestry system would require management intervention in the form of adding nitrogen fertilizers to increase coffee bean yield.

Profile of Multidrug Resistance and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from cats in Surabaya, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5703-5709. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the name given to Staphylococcus aureus that has multidrug-resistance (MDR) characteristics and is resistant to ?-lactam drugs. Compared to other livestock, companion animals have been mentioned as potential MRSA reservoirs more frequently. This study aimed to identify MDR and detects MRSA strains from cats in Surabaya. A total of 150 nasal swab of cats were taken from several clinics and veterinary hospital. Samples were swabbed using Amies Medium Transport then identified using microbiological standard method. Kirby-Bauer diffusion method was performed for S. aureus antibiotic resistance profile on five different antibiotic discs. As a confirmatory test for MRSA, S. aureus isolates that were resistant to cefoxitin continued to grow on Oxacillin Resistance Screening Agar Base (ORSAB). The findings of the isolation and identification and process revealed 18 (12%) S. aureus isolates. The antibiotic resistance test revealed 3 (2%) MDR S. aureus isolates and 4 (2.6%) MDR S. aureus isolates that were ORSAB positive. It has been discovered that there are MDR and MRSA S. aureus isolates. It could be used as an indicator of irrational usage of antibiotics and it explained that cats could be source of infection to public health.

Short Communication: Rare grouper Epinephelus miliaris from market surveys in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 6070-6074. Groupers of the genusEpinephelus are tropical demersal fishes of both ecological and economic importance. However, knowledge is still limited regarding the diversity of fish caught and traded as well as the fine-scale distribution of many species. During a series of market surveys to photograph and identify groupers exploited in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, a small number of specimens of a widespread but rare grouper, Epinephelus miliaris, were found. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the body of knowledge on E. miliaris by analyzing and presenting spatial, morphological, and meristic data collected on these specimens and discussing the findings with respect to the current state of knowledge regarding this species. Our findings add Sulawesi, including the Makassar Strait and Gulf of Bone, to the recorded distribution of E. miliaris, to the south of the range according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Both specimens were within the juvenile or sub-adult size range for this species. We conclude that there is a need to re-evaluate the range of this species, specifically within Indonesia, in fisheries and fish biodiversity databases.

Biodiversitas 24: 1621-1628. The study of ecological and biological features of cenotic and food plants is not only of important general biological significance, but also serves as a basis for the science-based study of resources and the preservation of species diversity. Elwendia persica (Apiaceae) grows in different regions of Central Asia and has been used regularly for several centuries, especially in traditional cuisines. In particular, local residents in mountainous areas collect this plant and benefit economically. This study aimed to assess the coenopopulation and phytocoenotic confinement of E. persica in Turkestan ridge, Djizakh region, Uzbekistan. The study was carried out between 2018 and 2022 and the ontogenetic structure of four coenopopulations of E. persica was studied. Evaluation of age (? - delta) and efficiency (? - omega) of coenopopulations revealed that the studied populations were classified as young (coenopopulations 1, 3, 4) and transient (coenopopulations 2). Analysis of demographic results shows that the density of individuals in the studied communities ranged 1.4-2.05 ind./m2, whereas the ecological density was 1.64-2.73 ind./m2. The coenopopulations had an index of recreation of 0.52-3.57 and ageing index 0 to 0.13. These indicators show that the coenopopulations are in a normal state. The state of coenopopulations was positively affected by a large amount of annual rainfall on the territory.

The stomatal and epidermal characteristics can be used as additional evidence in plant taxonomy activity. The aim of the study was to identify the stomatal and epidermal characteristics of Zingiberaceae in Serang District, Banten, Indonesia. The samples used were 11 species of Zingiberaceae in Serang District region. The stomatal and epidermal collection was carried out using the replica technique. Based on the results, all species has brachyparatetracytic type of stomata, on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of the leaf. The densities of stomata of all species observed on abaxial were higher than adaxial surface of the leaf. The stomatal density on adaxial surface of leaf between 1.71-4.43 stomata per unit leaf area of 171,602 µm2, while on abaxial 10.46-42.22 stomata per unit leaf area. The stomatal index on adaxial surface is between 1.34-6.97%, while on abaxial 7.54-30.25%. The length of guard cells on adaxial surface is between 30.30-47.85 µm, while on abaxial 29.86-50.68 µm. The width of guard cells on adaxial surface between 18.67-31.73 µm, while on abaxial 19.97-31.95 µm. The adaxial epidermal cells have a column, polygonal, or rectangular shapes, while the abaxial has poligonal or rectangular-shaped epidermal cells. The epidermal cells that are over leaf veins have polygonal or rectangular-shaped cells.

Identifying the hotspot area of Indo Pacific humpback (Sousa chinensis) and Irrawaddy (Orcaella brevirostris) dolphins in Matang waters, Perak, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 23: 6106-6113. The Indo-Pacific humpback (Sousa chinensis) and Irrawaddy (Orcaella brevirostris) dolphins are commonly found in Matang waters, Perak, Malaysia. The area, filled with healthy mangrove forest cover and many estuaries, is not only frequented by the dolphins for its daily activities but also extensively used by locals for artisanal fishing, charcoal production and organizing ecotourism activities. There could be a high risk of human-dolphin interactions, hence determining habitat use and identifying critical habitats or "hot spots" for the dolphins in the area is important. In this study, a series of dedicated boat sighting surveys were conducted from March 2019 to January 2021 between Kuala Gula and Kuala Jarum Mas. The total survey effort was 3325.76 km, 44 days and 239.38 hours. A total of 69 dolphin sightings were made, consisting of 40 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and 29 Irrawaddy dolphin observations, respectively. During each sighting, every dolphin's behaviors were categorized as: foraging, socializing, evasive, and travelling, and the survey area was classified into four blocks. The results indicated that different dolphin species have different hotspot areas. For Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, the hotspot area was Kuala Sangga, while the Irrawaddy dolphin's hotspot area was outside Kuala Larut, and there was a small overlap between the two dolphins' hotspots. Among the recorded behaviors (n: 281) for both dolphins, the most dominant was foraging (72.24%), followed by socializing (17%), evasive (7%), and travelling (4%). The sighted foraging behavior for both dolphin populations was dominant, indicating the hot spots were major foraging grounds for the two dolphin populations. This study shows the importance of Matang waters as a conservation area for the species and warrants further studies of dolphin population ecology to be conducted.

The number of tunicates is currently known for approximately 3000 species, but it is estimated that there are still 1000-2000 more species that have not been described globally. The Spermonde Archipelago in South Sulawesi is a habitat for various tunicates, but not all islands have been well explored. This study aims to expand the distribution map of tunicates in Spermonde Archipelago, especially in the two study islands (Pannikiang Island and Badi Island). The diversity of tunicates between two islands, which have different ecological conditions, is compared in this study. This study used a line transect method along 20 m with a combination of plots at a depth of 5 meters. A transect was applied at four different locations according to wind direction. All tunicates inside the transect were recorded, counted, and sub-sample were collected for identification purposes. The data obtained were analyzed using the diversity index (Chao-1, Shannon-wiener, Uniformity, and Dominance). There are a total of 35 species (24 species at Pannikiang Island and 18 at Badi Island). Nephtheis fascicularis, Didemnum molle, Clavelina robusta, and Polycarpa aurata can be found on both islands. The levels of diversity of the two islands differ with little in common.

In vitro evaluation of the antibacterial activity of seed kernel extracts of seven mangoes (Mangifera indica) cultivars native to Indonesia against MDR-Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from wounds. Biodiversitas 23: 5629-5637. Pseudomonas aeroginusa is the most common bacterium causing wound infections, with the most common solution being antibiotics. However, excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics will lead to the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. Therefore, natural ingredients are needed as alternative antibacterial agents. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of seed kernel extracts from seven cultivars of mango (Mangifera indica) from Indonesia, i.e., Cengkir, Kopyor, Golek, Kweni, Avocado, Arumanis, and Manalagi, against MDR-P. aeroginusa bacteria isolated from wounds. The agar well diffusion method was carried out to determine the inhibition zone, and the microdilution method was used to determine the MIC and MBC values. The results showed that the seed kernel extracts of seven cultivars of mangoes had antibacterial activity against MDR-P. aeruginosa. Of the seven mango cultivars, Kweni cultivar seed kernel extracts demonstrated the lowest MIC and MBC values of ?0.75 mg/mL and ?12.5 mg/mL. This study concludes that Kweni cultivar seed kernel extracts have the potential to be developed as agents of anti-MDR-P. aeruginosa causes wound infection.

Biodiversitas 23: 5412-5422. Beyond documenting the ethnobotanical knowledge by managers of complex agroforestry systems, the actual use of such knowledge in adapting to new circumstances and adopting new practices in dynamic farming systems has been described as ecological wisdom. Our study in the Kali Konto catchment of East Java (Indonesia) focused on an inventory of plants that are part of coffee-based agroforestry, their various types of use, and the role they play in the further integration of livestock into the local farming system. The 48 respondents mentioned, on average, 105 combinations of plant species and use categories for their coffee agroforestry plots. Across nine use categories (food, with spices and food wrapping as subcategories, animal fodder, medicine, construction, hedge/ornamentals, handicrafts, ritual uses), a total of 83 plant species (in 36 botanical plant families) were mentioned, with on average 2.18 reported uses per species. A small majority (56%) of the plant species was actively managed (and often planted); the rest were spontaneously established species.

Marine organisms can ingest microplastics that are distributed in the oceans. It can harm marine organisms because carcinogenic materials easily attach to microplastics. Trawl fish is a commercial fish with a high demand from people in Padang City, West Sumatera, Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the abundance of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tract of fish. Also, analyze the microplastic characteristics in trawl fish caught on Pasir Jambak Coast and Purus Coast in Padang City. The species studied were Sulphur goatfish (Upeneus sulphureus), Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta), and White sardinella (Sardinella albella). Microplastics were identified using microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. Microplastic abundance in Sulphur goatfish, Indian mackerel, and White sardinella was 3.89±1.36 per fish, 4.22±1.28 particles per fish, and 2.50±0.46 particles per fish, respectively. The size of the most commonly found microplastics ranged from 1-5 mm and was categorized as the Large Microplastic (LMP) type. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis showed that the origin of the type of microplastic polymer found was Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). Statistically, it shows that the difference in the location and time of sampling does not provide a significant difference in the concentration of microplastics in fish and seawater. The results of this study indicated that microplastics were found in the waters and all fish samples on the coast of Padang City studied. Microplastics in the trawl fish can be used to manage plastic waste in the city to prevent a worse impact due to plastic pollution in the future.
