Endophytic fungi from South Sumatra (Indonesia) in seed-treated corn suppressing Spodoptera frugiperda growth. Biodiversitas 23: 6024-6031. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of endophytic fungi in seed-treated corn on S. frugiperda growth. A total of 20 isolates of endophytic fungi were molecularly identified, namely Chaetomium sp. (GaTpeOi, JgTjPr, PiCrPga, and CaCjPga isolates), Aspergillus niger (PsgTjPr, JgByU, and JaBuBys isolates), Beauveria bassiana (JgSPK, JaGiP, JaSpkPGA(2) isolates), JgCrJr, dan JaTpOi (1) isolates), Curvularia lunata (JaGiPRB, CMTJP, JaMsBys, JaSpkPga(3), and JgTgSr isolates), Aspergillus flavus (JgPWSR isolate), Penicillium citrinum (JaTpOi(2) isolate), and Metarhizium anisopliae (CaTpPGA isolate). Of the 20 isolates, 4 isolates (JgSPK, JaGiP, JgCrJr, JaTpOi (1)) of B. bassiana and one isolate of each C. lunata (JaSpkPga (3)), and M anisoplae (CaTpPga) were found to be more pathogenic to S. frugiperda larvae. The endophytic fungi had negative effect on S. frugiperda growth. B. bassiana, M. anisopliae, and C. lunata decreased the percentage of pupal and adult emergence, and the number of eggs laid by treated female adults. The fungi also shorten the adult longevity and increased the larval mortality. This is the first report of pathogenicity of C. lunata against S. frugiperda. These findings highlight the potential of endophytic fungi, namely B. bassiana, M. anisopliae, and C. lunata from South Sumatra to protect young maize plant against S. frugiperda by seed treatment.

Morphological characteristics and biodiversity of mudskipper fish (Periophthalmus: Gobiidae) in mangrove ecosystem of coastal Bay of Tomini, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 498-507. The southern sea area of Gorontalo Province is part of Tomini bay, the biggest bay in Indonesia. This area has a unique biodiversity and is Sulawesi endemic. The mangrove forest in the coastal bay of Tomini Boalemo is one of the habitats for flora and fauna, a place for spawning, nurturing, and food hunting for fish. The mudskipper is a fish that lives in the mangrove area. This study aims to reveal the morphological characteristics and biodiversity of mudskipper (Periophthalmus: Gobiidae) in the ecosystem of Tomini Boalemo coastal bay of Gorontalo Province. This study employed a quantitative descriptive that also implemented purposive sampling as the sampling method in three ecosystem stations of Tomini Boalemo coastal bay (Dulupi, Bajo, and East Pentadu mangrove). The mudskippers were collected manually when the water was receding using a fish net. The sample which had been collected were then identified based on 22 morphological, 24 morphometric, and seven meristic characteristics. The identification results were then compared with the identification key. The mudskippers' species were then analyzed to determine the species' biodiversity (diversity, evenness, species richness, and dominance indexes). The research result revealed five species from Periophthalmus Genus: Periophthalmus argentilineatus, Periophthalmus kalolo, Periophthalmus malaccensis, Periophthalmus minutus, Periophthalmus variabilis, with total individuals 561. The score of H?: 1.09 showed that the diversity of mudskipper fish was categorized as medium. The evenness index was 0.99 obtained from 3 observation stations, while the lowest dominance index was on station II with a score of 0.34, and the score of R1 in each station was respectively (0.19); (0.36); and (0.2). The results of this study could be used as a database for the sustainable management of Tomini Bay to tackle the threats of species extinction through aquatic life protection and preservation to arrange the natural balance and support the availability of the coastal resource for future generations.

Metallothionein level in the larva of Cheumatopsyche sp. and the relationship between heavy metal concentration in Bone River, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5942-5950. This study aims to confirm that the larvae of Cheumatopsyche sp. contain a metal-binding protein, metallothionein, in their body and correlate it with heavy metal concentrations in the larval tissues and sediments in Bone River. Pb, Cd and Hg concentrations in sediment, tissue and Metallothionein (MT) levels were analyzed in several areas with different metal contamination. The Pb concentration in the sediment averaged 33.6 ppm; Hg 0.17 ppm; Cd 0.125 ppm. Total metals concentration in the whole body of Cheumatopsyche sp. ranged from 0.424 to 0.781, while the MT content ranged from 4637 to 6930 ng.g-1. The results revealed that the larvae could accumulate different metals and be more effective in accumulating Hg than Pb and Cd, regardless of the level of metal concentration in the sediment. Metal concentrations measured in Cheumatopsyche sp. showed a significant correlation with metals in the sediment. Metallothionein levels throughout the larval body showed differences in different areas of metal contamination and this correlated with the concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Hg measured in the larval tissue, thus reflecting their bioavailability in the environment. The results also showed that even under exposure to low metal concentrations, MT was still detectable in Cheumatopsyche sp. and proved to be a good predictor of metal accumulation.

Abstract. Suheri M, Haneda NF, Anwar R, Jung Y, Sukeno S, Park J. 2022. Population dynamics of Zeuzera spp. (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) on Eucalyptus pellita plantation in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5782-5789. The red coffee borer, Zeuzera spp. (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) damage to Eucalyptus pellita forests was one of the problems in the forestry sector. The population dynamic of these insects is monitored and surveyed on E. pellita at PT Korintiga Hutani. The present study aimed to analyze the contributing factors of Zeuzera spp. damage to E. pellita plantation and observe the population dynamics of Zeuzera spp. using pheromone traps. The survey results showed that the accumulated damage in planting block 5 was more serious (29%) than in planting block 6 (9%). The impact of the multi-regression analysis indicates that the main factors affecting the damage are the location and age of the plantation. At the same time, the E. pellita clonal difference is minor compared to those two factors. The damage is more severe and occurs at an older age of plantations. The population dynamics of Zeuzera spp. observed in E. pellita plantation showed a peak flight trend in October, followed by a reasonably high population presence from late May to early June. This information could be a primary consideration for these insect pest need to control the significant damage to E. pellita trees and determine the management of Zeuzera spp. based on the timing of larvae infestation in the upcoming after-peak flight.

Biodiversitas 23: 6238-6246. Highland papaya (Vasconcellea pubescens A.DC.), locally called karika, is a fruit plant successfully introduced to Java, Indonesia. V. pubescens plays an essential role as it contains various substances that can be used as ingredients in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. This plant is dioecious and monoecious as it contains three sex types, namely female, male, and monoecious. It grew from seed and began to bear fruit two years after sowing. The consumer preference for fruit is produced from female plants because female plants produce fruit faster, more abundantly, and with maximum fruit size under suitable environmental conditions. Sex differentiation is important for farmers to ensure the growth of female plants. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the variation in macro and micro-morphological characters. The results showed that leaf and flower differ in macromorphological characters among the three sex types. Similarly, there were considerable differences in the trichomes of female and monoecious plants based on micro-morphological characteristics. There was no significant difference in seed shape between those. Seeds from female and monoecious plants differed in macro and micro-morphological characters. Macro and micro-morphological characters might have potential applications in early sex determination in V. pubescens. Abstract. Nurjaniv AA, Medetof MZH, Kholmatov BR, Abdullahyev II, Tufliyev NKH, Nurjonov FA. 2023. Orthoptera (Insecta) fauna of the Kashkadarya region, Uzbekistan. Biodiversitas 24: 112-121. More than 30,000 different species of orthoptera insects, most of which are found in the tropics and subtropics, are known to exist in the world's fauna. The most extensive among the orthopteroids is the order Orthoptera, which includes more than 20,000 species of insects. Most are herbivores, while others are predators or have a mixed diet. Large size, jumping abilities, and open lifestyle make orthopteran characters accessible to many landscapes. Orthopterans play a significant role in the movement of the energy flow as an important link in biocenosis, connecting secondary consumers with producers. Many species of Orthopterans, especially grasshoppers, are dangerous pests of agriculture. Harm is especially noticeable from those locust species, which could make swarms. The research was carried out in various agro and natural landscapes to determine the species composition of orthopteran insects in the Kashkadarya region. A total of 1274 samples were collected from 11 coordinates in 10 different landscapes during the scientific trips. They comprised 657 females (51.4%), 403 males (31.6%), and 214 nymphs (16.7%). The distribution of 70 species belonging to 50 genera and 7 families of orthopteran insects is discussed in this research. Samples were taken from 6 coordinates in 6 types (cucurbits, orchards, alfalfa, mulberry, vineyards, and mung bean fields) of agro-landscapes and 6 coordinates in 4 natural (plains of the Karshi desert, hills, mountains, and saxaul forests) landscapes. The highest species diversity has been found in orchards, where 129 samples of 20 orthopteran species have been collected in the Guzar district of the Kashkadarya region. The Karshi desert was identified as the landscape with the lowest number of species, with 41 samples of 9 species collected. The average density of insects in the desert was 0.4 per square meter. Two species were found in all 12 coordinates of 10 different landscapes, and 11 were found only once in one coordinate.

Biodiversitas 23: 6492-6512. Samar Island National Park (SINP) forests over limestone, a nominee to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List, needs a comprehensive study of its vegetation structure as the baseline for monitoring and effective conservation. Thus, an inventory was conducted in SINP inland forests over limestone with the following objectives: 1) to discuss the woody vegetation structure in the forests of SINP, and 2), to determine the environmental factors affecting the characteristic physiognomy and ecology of Paranas and Taft forests. Standard vegetation techniques in a total of eighteen 20m x 20m plots, classification and ordination analyses were conducted. A total of 3,578 tree individuals in 72 species, under 46 genera belonging to 35 families, were recorded from Paranas and Taft. Cluster analysis revealed 3 vegetation clusters named after the dominant species: 1) Shorea-Manilkara-Walaceodendron Cluster, 2) Shorea and Dracaena Cluster, and 3) Shorea-Manilkara-Hancea Cluster. Canonical correspondence analysis identified temperature as the most important environmental variable influencing the vegetation of SINP. Other environmental variables, despite their high rate of change and little effect on other species, may have multiple effects and indirect influences on other factors influencing the structure of vegetation in SINP. Thus, the development of appropriate conservation strategies is a must.

Abstract. Ramayanti I, Herlinda S, Muslim A, Hasyim H. 2022. First report of entomopathogenic fungi from South Sumatra (Indonesia): pathogenicity to egg, larvae, and adult of Culex quinquefasciatus. Biodiversitas 23: 5695-5702. Mosquito control has currently used many biocontrol agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi. So, the study aimed to determine the pathogenicity of the entomopathogenic fungi from South Sumatra to the eggs, larvae, and adults of Culex quinquefasciatus. The fungal isolates used were eight isolates from South Sumatra and have been identified molecularly. The fungal species that were the most pathogenic to the eggs of Cx. quinquefasciatus were Beauveria bassiana (BSwTd4, TaLmME, TaPsBA isolates), Metarhizium anisopliae (MSwTp3 isolate), Penicillium citrinum (BKbTp isolate), and Talaromyces diversus (MSwTp1 isolate). The Cx. quinquefasciatus eggs infected with the fungus not only could kill the eggs but also could continue to kill the emerging larvae, pupae, and adult. This is the first record that B. bassiana, M. anisopliae, P. citrinum, and T. diversus from South Sumatera Indonesia were pathogenic to the eggs of Cx. quinquefasciatus and had ovicidal activity. The most pathogenic fungal species to the larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus were M. anisopliae (MSwTp3 isolate) and B. bassiana (BSwTd4 and TaLmME isolates). Three species of entomopathogenic fungi that were the most pathogenic to the adults of Cx. quinquefasciatus were M. anisopliae (MSwTp3 isolate), B. bassiana (BSwTd4 and TaLmME isolates), and P. citrinum (BKbTp isolate). Finally, The entomopathogenic fungi from South Sumatra have the negative effect on Cx. quinquefasciatus growth. The entomopathogenic fungi from South Sumatra have potential to be developed as the ovicide, larvicide, and adulticide. The future application of the fungi against the mosquito eggs, larvae, and adults can be used an ovitrap, fungal spores formulated in a synthetic oil, and fungus-impregnated black cloths, respectively.

Rice is the staple food of most Asian, including Indonesian people. Plant breeding plays an important role in producing high-yielding varieties of rice to meet national carbohydrate sufficiency. Green Super Rice (GSR) is an alternative for rice variety development that has the advantages of high yield, good quality, pest resistance, and efficient fertilizer use to support sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic character of GSR doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from anther culture and determine the best GSR rice lines based on index selection. The treatment was 65 genotypes consisting of 60 DH of GSR lines from anther culture of 5 combinations of crosses and 5 check varieties. The study used a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that most of the tested lines had similar agronomic performances to the check variety Inpari 42 Agritan GSR. Almost all agronomic characters of the GSR DH lines had high genetic variability. Most characters had a high category of broad-sense heritability except panicle length. Line selection using index selection for economically important agronomic characters yielded 27 GSR DH lines having high productivity, number of productive tillers per hill, number of total grains per panicle, and percentage of filled grains per panicle.

Abstract. Hadianto W, Purwoko BS, Dewi IS, Suwarno WB, Hidayat P. 2023. Selection index and agronomic characters of doubled haploid rice lines from anther culture. Biodiversitas 24: 1511-1517. Development of superior rice varieties requires selection of the best lines having good agronomic characters and high yields. This study aimed to select high-yielding doubled haploid rice lines obtained from anther culture through index selection and agronomic characters. The study was conducted using a single-factor randomized complete block design (RCBD) with genotype as treatment. Sixty doubled haploid lines and 5 check varieties were evaluated along with three replications, hence, the total experimental unit was 195. Analysis of variance showed that the genotypes had a significant effect on all observed characters, except for the number of productive tillers. The agronomic characters observed had a high broad sense of heritability, except for the number of productive tillers which was in the medium category. Furthermore, index selection was carried out based on productivity, the number of productive tillers, the total number of grains, as well as the percentage of filled grains. Based on the index selection, 29 lines were selected among the 60 doubled haploid rice lines tested. These lines had the range in productivity from 2.95 to 6.77 ton ha-1, the number of productive tillers from 12.3 to 20.8 tillers, the total number of grains from 135 to 275.4 seeds, the filled grain percentage from 53.23 to 87.61%, and the selection index from -1.48 to 7.88. The selected lines will be further tested at the next experimental stage in several locations to produce high-yielding, brown planthopper-resistant, and drought-tolerant rice varieties.
