Isroni W, Pramudia Z, Bahri AS, Risqiana MA, Maulida N, Irawandani TD. 2023. Comparative study of the application fish apartments in Situbondo and Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4034-4045. Fisheries resources which are common property in their utilization are vulnerable to overfishing conditions due to exploratory actions. In addition, the use of destructive fishing gear and habitat degradation has a great impact on fisheries productivity which continues to decrease. Fish apartments as alternative artificial habitat have been successfully applied in Probolinggo, especially for coral organisms. This study compares the application of fish apartments in two different locations, Karang Katon Probolinggo and Karang Mayit Beach Situbondo. Through descriptive and valuative approaches, the survey results showed that in Karang Katon there were 5 species, the highest composition level is Acanthurus achilles (51.56%).Karang Mayit Beach there were 3 species, the highest composition level is Chaetodon octofasciatus (60.56%). The highest abundance is Acanthurus achilles (34.4 ind/m2) in Karang Katon and Chaetodon octofasciatus (42.2 ind/m2) in Karang Mayit Beach. The diversity index in Karang Katon-1.280, while in Karang Mayit Beach-0.853. The dominance index in Karang Katon 0.343, while in Karang Mayit Beach 0.496. Based on this research, the analysis showed positive results for both different locations, indicating it can be used as new habitats for sustainability and increased productivity of fisheries resources.

Morphological and molecular characteristics of Donax incarnatus (Bivalvia: Donacidae) from Badur Beach, Madura Island, Indonesia based on the COX1 gene. Biodiversitas 24: 2805-2813. Donacidae, a family of marine bivalve mollusks, has a high diversity of morphological traits, including shape and color pattern variations. However, these variations often led to errors in morphological identification, necessitating the use of molecular identification methods for accurate species identification and support. This study aims to analyze the morphological and molecular characteristics of Donax incarnatus Gmelin, 1791 collected from Badur Beach of Madura Island, Sumenep District, East Java Province, Indonesia, using the COX1 gene as a molecular marker. Morphological characterization was conducted through qualitative and quantitative observations, while sequencing results were analyzed using bioinformatics software. The results showed that the exterior color of D. incarnatus has three morphological variations, namely purple-black (OQ692130.1), yellowish orange (OQ692131.1), and white (OQ692132.1). Molecular characterization indicated that the similarity value of D. incarnatus with these variations ranged from 96.06% to 99.61%. At the same time, the alignment results of all samples with reference species and outgroups obtained five variations of nucleotide bases. The average genetic distance between D. incarnatus and the in group was 0.01. The phylogenetic tree results obtained using Neighbor-Joining (NJ) and Maximum Likelihood (ML)methods were categorized into two subclusters: D. incarnatus species from Thailand and the study sample from Badur Beach, Madura Island, Indonesia, were placed in the same cluster.

Abstract. Djoemharsjah IS, Ambarwati R, Rahayu DA. 2023. DNA barcoding Clithonsp. (Gastropoda: Neritidae) from Badur Beach, Madura, Indonesia, based on COI gene molecular marker. Biodiversitas 24: xxxx. Neritidae is polymorphic with various shell colors and patterns; therefore, they were doubts about the identifying species from the genus Clithon, namely Clithon sp. from Badur Beach of Madura Island, Sumenep District, East Java Province, Indonesia. In addition, DNA barcoding could provide genetic information using short DNA sequences to quickly and precisely identify species. This study aimed to identify the genus Clithon sp. from Badur Beach, based on Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I(COI) genes and analysis of phylogenetic relationships. The research methods include sampling, sample preservation, morphological identification of species, DNA isolation, amplification, electrophoresis, and sequencing using the Sanger method with genetic analysis using bioinformatics software. The results of COI barcode identification obtained a DNA sequence length of 490bp with a similarity value of the three Clithon sp. samples between 96.75 to 98.97%. The identification with the Barcode of Life Data System consisted of three variations of nucleotide bases, and the average value of the genetic distance with the in-group was 1.74% as Clithon sp. The Phylogenetic tree Clithon sp. from Badur Beach, was in the same clade as Clithon sowerbianum Récluz 1843 and Clithon mertonianum Récluz 1843 with the Neighbor-Joining Tree and Maximum Likelihood methods with bootstrap values between 96-100. Therefore, the COI barcode DNA markers analysis successfully identified Clithon sp. from Badur Beach, Madura, Indonesia as C. sowerbianum.

Abstract. Alshami HGA, Al-Tamimi WH, Hateet RR. 2023. The antioxidant potential of copper oxide nanoparticles synthesized from a new bacterial strain. Biodiversitas 24: 2666-2673. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) have recently gained much attention due to their potential in various fields. The present study aimed to screen nine bacterial strains (Klebsiella quasipneumoniae KP18-31, K. pneumoniae IOB-L, K. quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae 2437, Bacillus cereus DBA1, B. thuringiensis MSP51, Neobacillus drentensis ROA042, Enterococcus faecalis 2674, Exiguobacterium mexicanum AB201, and Acinetobacter lwoffii K34) isolated from produced water of oil field reservoirs for their ability to biosynthesize CuONPs, as well as characterize and evaluate the antioxidant potential of the manufactured CuONPs. Biosynthesized CuONPs were characterized using XRD, TEM, AFM, and zeta potential analysis. In addition, the DPPH method was used to analyze the antioxidant activity of CuONPs. The results revealed that five of the nine isolates could synthesize CuONPs. B. thuringiensis MSP5 was the best and most productive among them, and it was used for the first time in this present study as an oil field bacteria for the biosynthesis of CuONPs. The results showed that CuONPs have a spherical shape with an average size of 20, 33, and 75 nm based on XRD, TEM, and AFM analysis, respectively. The zeta potential value of the synthesized CuONPs was -12.4 mV. The antioxidant results demonstrated that CuONPs have a remarkable scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 141.68 ?g/mL. This study concluded that CuONPs were excellent free radical scavengers.

Secondary metabolites of the granular form of Pseudomonas fluorescens P60 and its applications to control tomato bacterial wilt. Biodiversitas 24: 2475-2482. Bacterial wilt is one of the important diseases of tomatoes caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith 1896) Yabuuchi et al. 1996. Its control can be achieved by applying secondary metabolites of Pseudomonas fluorescens Migula 1895 P60 in granular form. The study aimed to determine the shelf life of the secondary metabolites P. fluorescens P60' in granular form and its application to manage bacterial wilt and the performance of tomatoes. The study was conducted for five months at the Plant Protection Laboratory and Experimental Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. A randomized block design was used with four replicates and six treatments, consisting of R. solanacearum (control), R. solanacearum + 1, 5, 10, or 15 g, and bactericide (a.i. agrimycin sulphate 20%). Variables observed were inhibition zone, incubation period, disease intensity, the area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), crop height, crop fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, and phenolic compounds qualitatively. Results of the research showed that the granular formula until the 4th week still had an inhibition zone between 21.67-23.34%. However, the granules stored for as much as 15 g for four weeks effectively reduced disease intensity by 75.00%, decreased AUDPC value by 74.72%, and increased plant height, root dry weight, and fresh crop weight as well 44, 62.5, and 65.65 %, respectively. In addition, the granular formula increased the content of tomato phenolic compounds qualitatively.

Bioprospection of single and a consortium endophytic bacteria of suboptimal field rice isolates as biocontrol of rice bacterial leaf blight pathogens. Biodiversitas 24: 2710-2715. Rice root endophytic bacteria isolated from suboptimal land have the potential to control leaf blight by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The aim of this research was: 1) to test the potential of single and consortium endophytic bacteria single and consortium to control Xoo in vitro, 2) to know the antibiosis mechanism of this endophytic bacteria and 3) to evaluate the biochemical character of the single endophytic bacteria as an antagonist feature. The completely randomized design with 5 single and 1 consortium treatment, 4 replications was used as a research method. The inhibition was carried out using a diffusion method of 108 cfu/mL endophytic bacterial suspension. Filter paper 6 mm diameter had been dripped 10 µL suspension of endophytic bacteria, then it placed 3 spots on NA that had been poured with Xoo. The variable observed was the inhibition zone of endophytic bacteria, the inhibition mechanism, and the character as antagonist produces protease; and siderophore. The results showed that both single and consortium endophytic bacteria could potentially suppress Xoo in-vitro, and the best inhibition was the consortium with an inhibitory area of ??62.74 mm2 and the bacteriostatic mechanism. The consortium's antibiosis index was 1.49, it can produce protease and siderophore with clear zone and orange color features. The endophytic bacteria consortium has the potential as a biopesticide to be developed as an alternative to control rice bacterial leaf blight.

Abstract. Boonman N, Chutrtong J, Wanna C, Boonsilp S, Chunchob S. 2023. Antimicrobial activities of endophytic bacteria isolated from Ageratum conyzoides Linn. Biodiversitas 24: 1971-1979. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from various parts of Ageratum conyzoides Linn. Total 35 isolates were obtained which were consisting of eight isolates from the roots (AconR1-AconR8), nine isolates from the stems (AconS1-AconS9), seven isolates from the leaves (AconL1-AconL7) and 11 isolates from the flowers (AconF1-AconF11). These endophytic bacteria were examined for their antimicrobial activities against human pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The AconR2 and AconR4 inhibited the growth of Shigella flexneri and Salmonella enterica ser. typhi, whereas Escherichia coli was only inhibited by AconR2. For the antifungal activities assay, all isolated endophytic bacteria revealed no effect on Candida albicans, while six endophytic isolates exhibited more than 80% mycelial growth inhibition against Microsporum canis. These highly effective isolates were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The Bruker scores revealed that AconR2 and AconR4 were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, AconS1 and AconS6 were classified as Enterobacter asburiae, Acon L5 and Acon F9 were identified as Bacillus cereus. The results indicated that these endophytic bacteria isolated from A. conyzoides effectively inhibited the growth of human pathogenic filamentous fungi and showed promise for further development as novel antifungal agents.

Abstract. Hairani B, Hadi UK, Supriyono. 2023. Species diversity and daily infestation patterns of Haematophagus flies in cattle farms at Tanah Bumbu District, South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 2995-3003. Blood-sucking flies act as livestock pests and vectors of zoonotic diseases. This study aims to know the species diversity of blood-sucking flies, relative abundance, frequency, and dominance of species and their correlation to weather parameters on beef cattle farms with three different ecosystems in the Tanah Bumbu District, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research was conducted from August to October 2022 on 6 beef cattle farms in Tanah Bumbu District with different types of ecosystems, namely forest, non-forest, and coastal areas. The flies was collected by using sweep nets, NZI traps. and Vavoua traps. Blood meal activity was measured by counting flies infestation on the cow's body. The results showed that there were 11 species of blood-sucking flies, i.e., Stomoxys calcitrans Linnaeus 1758, S. sitiens Rondani 1873, S. indicus Picard 1908, S. bengalensis Picard 1908, Haematobia exigua Meijere 1903, Therioplectes sp., Chrysops fixissimus Walker 1856, Tabanus optatus Walker 1856, T. striatus Fabricius 1787, T. rubidus Wiedemann 1821, and Hippobosca sp. The S. calcitrans population appears to be dominat in each type of ecosystem. The peak of blood-sucking fly infestations on the body of beef cattle in each ecosystem occurred at 10AM-2PM. In addition, the environmental temperature and humidity were significantly correlated to fluctuations in blood-sucking fly infestations in each ecosystem, and the light intensity was significantly correlated to the population of H. exigua in coastal ecosystems, while the wind velocity was not significantly correlated to all species in all ecosystems.

Pattiselanno F, Tokede MJ, Arobaya AYS, Mardiatmoko G, Pattiselanno AE. 2023. Hunting introduced species in Indonesia New Guinea. Biodiversitas 24: 3045-3050. Hunting in tropical forests is mostly performed to obtain animal protein sources, generate income, and enact cultural activities. However, it is acknowledged that hunting was conducted indiscriminately, killing both native and introduced species. This study aimed to describe hunting activities along the lowland coastal forests in Tambrauw Districts. Fieldwork was carried out between June 2011 and December 2012 in eleven villages across the Abun and Amberbaken sub districts of Tambrauw Districts, Papua Barat Province of Indonesia. Information about hunting was gathered through interviews with 220 hunters (focus respondents; 20 hunters in each village). Therefore, to gain an overall picture of hunting in the sampled villages, we distributed 100 questionnaires, not including those focal respondents, and 800 were returned from 11 villages. This study revealed hunting for trading (49%) compared to consumption (44%) and the rest (7%) hunting for others (festive, pest, and trophy). The hunting is classified as very frequent (2-3 days per week) by 10%, frequent (weekly and fortnightly) by 41%, and rarely (monthly) by 49% of hunters. Active techniques used were bows and arrows, spears and blades were primarily used by 38%, and hunting with dogs was 29% by inhabitants in the studied villages. On the other hand, passive hunting using snares and guns were used by 28% and 5% of hunters, respectively. Hunters reported nine main prey species had been hunted, and the prey consisted of six mammal and three bird species. Two of the nine species were introduced species, i.e., rusa deer and wild pig; they provided the largest amount of meat and fat and were economically profitable. Other native species were also hunted, although not much as introduced ones. The average catch per hunting trip was 2 individuals (2.42 ± SD 1.93). In this study, hunting introduced species is important because it is more profitable while protecting the native species or those of conservation concern.

Abstract. Pasaribu N, Atni OK, Siregar JP. 2023. Diversity and species composition of lichens across altitudinal range in the Batang Toru Forest, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 2171-2178. West Block of Batang Toru Forest, located in North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra is one of the protection forest areas which has uniqueness and high biodiversity, one of them is the lichen. The information regarding the lichen species found in the West Block of Batang Toru Forest Research Station has never been reported. Its various types and distributions are unknown. This study aimed to observe lichen at the Batang Toru Forest Research Area, which was carried out from September 2021 to March 2022. The study was carried out with the exploration method by exploring along the track. From the results of the study, there was a total of 54 species of lichen consisting of 23 families and 38 genera. Based on the types of the thallus, it was found 23 species of lichen classified as foliose, 21 crustose, 4 fruticose, 3 squamulose, and 3 filamentous. The most common lichen family found at the study site was Lobariaceae, with a total of six species. The species collected in this study were mostly found on the bark substrate. This study reveals important information about the variety of lichen species in the West Block of Batang Toru Forest, highlighting the urgent need for further research and conservation efforts to protect this unique and diverse ecosystem.
