Fish diversity of the Bengawan Solo River estuary, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 2207-2216. Bengawan Solo River is the longest river in Java which flows from Mount Lawu and empties into the North Coast of Java. The watershed is a hot spot for fish species diversity, especially in the estuary area. The purpose of this study was to initiate an inventory of fish species, their abundance, and biodiversity assessment based on the Shannon diversity index (H'), evenness index (E), and dominance index (C) in the Bengawan Solo River estuary. The research was conducted from September to November 2022 at three stations with different ecological types and environmental conditions. Fish sampling was carried out using a gill net attached to a boat. In this study, 44 fish species from 22 families were identified. The highest abundance of fish was obtained from the Ariidae family, namely the Spotted sea catfish Arius maculatus (Thunberg, 1792) and Sagor catfish Hexanematichthys sagor (Hamilton, 1822). The fish diversity index obtained was 1.2-3.01, the uniformity index obtained was 0.7-0.92, and the dominance index obtained was 0.07-0.33. The H', E, and C at Station 2 have higher values ??than the other stations. The diversity expressed in H' values ??at the three research stations indicates that the mangrove in the Bengawan Solo River estuary area has a high diversity of fish species.

Abstract. Sari JMP, Herlinda S, Suwandi S, Elfita. 2023. Effect of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae on the growth of Spodoptera frugiperda by seed inoculation. Biodiversitas 24: 2350-2357. Spodoptera frugiperda J.E.Smith 1797 larvae are more difficult to control because they hide in the leaf sheaths. Therefore, it is necessary to use endophytic entomopathogenic fungi to control S. frugiperda larva. The aim of this research was to observe the effect of endophytic Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorok?n on the growth of S. frugiperda larvae by seed inoculation. A total of six isolates of B. bassiana (5 isolates) and M. anisopliae (1 isolate) were isolated from infected-host insect corpses and identified molecularly. The corn seeds were immersed using a fungal suspension of 1 x 1010 conidia mL-1. The results showed that feeding on maize leaves colonized with B. bassiana (JGTP240521A, WTTJC260521A, WTTJC290521A, WTTJC290521B, and JGNT300521 isolates) and M. anisopliae (WTTJC260521B isolate) significantly reduced the larval and pupal weight. The highest mortality (above 50%) of S. frugiperda larvae was recorded by B. bassiana (JGTP240521A isolate) . The treated larvae could produce abnormal and malformation pupae and adults, increasing mortality. Both fungi killed the larvae and induced disruption of normal growth larvae, pupae, and adults of S. frugiperda. B. bassiana was more pathogenic than M. anisopliae in killing the larvae of S. frugiperda. Results revealed that endophytic fungi B. bassiana and M. anisopliae inoculated through seed treatment had a negative impact on the growth of S. frugiperda larvae. Further studies are needed on the effect of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae by foliar spraying or seed treatment on maize plant to control S. frugiperda in the field.

Abstract. Lestari NKD, Deswiniyanti NW, Sari NKY, Murna IM, Rizqy AN. 2023. Morphological relationships and cross compatibility of seven Dendrobium species in Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3550-3558. The development of Dendrobium hybrid orchids in Indonesia has received less attention. This study aimed to obtain the morphological characteristics and taxonomical relationships of Dendrobium species, their interspecific and intersectional compatibility for hybridization, as well as the fertility of hybridized Dendrobium orchids. Seven Dendrobium species from several sections were used, namely D. phalaenopsis, D. lineale, D. stratiotes, D. macrophyllum, D. nobile, D. heterocarpum and D. bracteosum. We characterized the seven species based on morphological traits and investigated the taxonomical relationships using hierarchical cluster analysis by dendrogram charts. We then crossed the seven species to produce hybrids and the hybrids were then cultured in vitro. The hybridization and in vitro culture data were analyzed using an ANOVA test with Duncan's post hoc test when the results significantly differed. The results showed that the taxonomical relationship was clustered based on the sections of each Dendrobium species. The highest percentage of hybridization compatibility was found in D. phalaenopsis and D. lineale with 61.9% while the lowest was in D. nobile, and D. bracteosum (0%). Germination percentages in in vitro culture ranged from 40% to 100% for both interspecific and intersectional crosses, except for intersectional crosses of D. nobile, which failed to germinate. The findings of this study suggest that the results of interspecies and intersectional crossing showed that the highest compatibility was indicated by D. phalaenopsis and D. lineale. Therefore, they are highly recommended as the parents of hybrid orchids.

Compatible mycorrhizal association of orchids with fungi is required for the germination and seedling development. In the present study, the mycorrhizal association of Dendrobium bigibbum with three species of saprophytic Basidiomycota, in particular, Volvariella volvacea, Lentinus tigrinus, and Pleurotus florida were evaluated. Co-culture technique was carried out during rhizoid and seedling development of D. bigibbum. Results revealed that the growth of D. bigibbum in rhizoid and seedling stages was enhanced when symbiotically grown with V. volvacea and L. tigrinus. D. bigibbum grown with V. volvacea had the highest mean length of the 1st leaf during the rhizoid stage. In seedling stage, V. volvacea and L. tigrinus significantly increased the growth of D. bigibbum in terms of length of 2nd leaf and fresh weight of the seedlings. For the length of root, increase in mean length was observed only in D. bigibbum co-cultured with L. tigrinus. In addition, the presence of peloton colonization was observed both in rhizoid and seedling stages. Thus, both V. volvacea and L. tigrinus formed compatible mycorrhizal association with D. bigibbum.

Biodiversitas 24: 2556-2562. Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an economically important legume crop in Vietnam and many other countries worldwide. Groundnut cultivation is affected by many biotic and abiotic stresses. Among biotic stresses, groundnut is attacked by many fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens. The most harmful fungal diseases are rust, stem rot, collar rot and other soil borne diseases. Collar rot caused by Aspergillus niger is one of the most important disease of groundnut extensive in Vietnam and worldwide. In this study, symptomatic infected plant samples were collected from nine different locations in Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces, Vietnam Isolated fungal species were identified on the basis of morphological characterization, and molecular level. The pathogenicity of fungal species was confirmed on the basis of Koch's postulates. The result showed that a total of nine fungal strains were isolated from infected groundnut samples. Morphological analysis results showed that all isolates exhibited A. niger characteristics, including black colony, biseriate conidia, hyaline conidiophores and sterigmata. Pathogenicity test showed that all nine A. niger isolates caused collar rot disease in groundnuts. Further molecular identification based on ITS1-4 region nucleotides comparison indicated that selected two isolates, namely QT1 and H17 belonged to A. niger. Further research should be done to find antagonistic microorganisms isolates for the bio-control of A. niger.

Ethnobotanical study on plant leaves for food wrapping in traditional markets of Wonosobo District, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3803-3813. Currently, almost all items in our daily life are made from plastic, such as food packaging, household appliances, drink bottles, and plastic bags. The use of plastic packaging can harm the environment and human health. Plant leaves for food wrapping can be an alternative to reduce these impacts. Indonesia has many cultures, philosophies, and social activities related to using plant leaves for food wrapping. This study aimed to document public knowledge about plant leaves for food wrapping in the traditional markets of Wonosobo District, Central Java Province, Indonesia. This study used the purposive sampling technique to select 41 informants for the interviews. A total of 10 plant leaves species belonging to 7 families were used for food wrapping by traders in the traditional markets of Wonosobo District. The ten species were Musa spp., Tectona grandis, Cocos nucifera, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Artocarpus camansi, Ficus septica, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Pandanus amaryllifolius, Cordyline fruticosa, and Alocasia macrorrhizos. These trees dominate plant growth forms in this study. The leaves of these different plants were used as food plates and wraps for multiple dishes. Efforts are needed to reduce plastic use in the traditional markets by making regulations to minimize or substitute with plant leaves.

Survey of mosquitoes species in Henda Village, Pulang Pisau District, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia in filariasis case area. Biodiversitas 25: 4886-4893. Filariasis is a zoonotic disease found in tropical regions. One of the filariasis endemic areas is Henda Village, Pulang Pisau District, Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Three cases of filariasis cases were identified in Henda Village. This study aimed to identify mosquito species that act as vectors in Henda Village. Mosquito samples were collected using human landing collection, resting collection, animal-baited traps, animal barrier screens, and light traps. A total of 650 mosquitoes were collected, including Culex quinquefasciatus (n=361), Mansonia bonneae (n=134), Mansonia uniformis (n=90), Aedes aegypti (n=46), Aedes albopictus (n=13), Coquillettidia crassipes (n=5), and Anopheles barbirostris (n=1). The human landing collection method caught the highest number of mosquitoes at 438 mosquitoes. Overall, the total number of mosquitoes obtained, the highest number of mosquitoes obtained was the species of Culex sp. was Cx. quinquefasciatus.

Species composition and diversity of waterbird communities in Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of South West Johor Coast, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 24: 3471-3480. Mangroves play a crucial role in supporting intertidal flats and providing habitats that enrich benthic communities, which in turn serve as feeding grounds for coastal waterbirds. However, the degradation of mangrove habitats caused by coastal reclamation activities indirectly impacts prey availability and, consequently, the populations of waterbirds. The coastline habitat along the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of the South West Johor Coast is currently under threat due to new and ongoing development projects involving large-scale reclamation activities. Therefore, this research was conducted to study the diversity and abundance of waterbirds and their relationship with prey availability. The study was conducted in three coastal mudflat sites along the South West Johor Coast, namely Tanjung Piai, Pontian Kechil, and Muar, from November 2020 to May 2021. The direct observation technique was used to determine the abundance of waterbirds, while the benthic core sampling method was employed to assess prey availability in all study sites. In total, 3,717 individual waterbirds, comprising 17 species, were counted across the three study sites. The study confirmed a significant positive relationship between the abundance of waterbirds and prey availability (R2=0.501). The results of this study serve as important baseline data and references for the conservation of waterbirds along the South West Johor Coast. Through the study, we believe that the relevant authorities are able to formulate sound conservation strategies to preserve the habitat for a vast diversity of waterbirds.

Pollination biology of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis forma flavicarpa) at typical Indonesian small-scale farming. Biodiversitas 24: 2179-2188. Yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis forma flavicarpa) has been considered one of the potential local fruits targeted as the export commodity of Indonesia. However, this fruit production level is relatively unstable, which lowers their potency as cash crops and makes them secondary fruits for small-scale farmers. One of the possible factors related to this condition is pollination success. This research aimed to study the pollination biology of yellow passion fruit in terms of flower interaction with insects and the morphological aspect of flowers. The observation was conducted in four sites at Kampung Organik Beji, Wonogiri Regency, between January-February 2022. Pollinators' census was done by scan sampling while flower-visiting insect activities were monitored by focal sampling. This study found 26 species of flower-visiting insects which can be grouped into 5 Ordo and 12 Families with moderate diversity index (H’=2.15), evenly distributed (J’=0.66), and low domination (D=0.32). Among identified insects, carpenter bees (Xylocopa latipes), stingless bees (Tetragonula laeviceps), and Asiatic honey bees (Apis cerana) were considered as pollinators in which X. latipes (Vt=11.81±7.44 second, Fvr=2.41±1.55) visited flower (Vt) on shorter times, and more flower visitation rate (Fvr) than T. laeviceps (Vt=12.36±8.32 second, Fvr=1.10±0.30). Furthermore, this study found that the benefit of natural pollination was better than hand cross-pollination. However, the benefit was hampered by a lack of plant protection and soil fertility management. This study may be applied as baseline information to create pollinator protection zones in the area near the plantation zone to ensure the pollination services for crops.

Abstract. Tokaew W, Krubkratoke D, Payakdet S, Phromprasit P. 2023. Comparative anatomical characters of the genus Aerides Lour. (Orchidaceae) in Thailand. Biodiversitas 24: 6641-6651. The genus Aerides Lour. belonging to the subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae), which are ornamental plants in Thailand. The identification of Thai Aerides is mostly based on the flower morphology which is a short period. The vegetative parts of Aerides species have similar characters. The anatomical data are also helpful for the identification of the Aerides species. Therefore, this study aimed to observe the vegetative stages (leaf and root) of seven species of Aerides in Thailand. Permanent slides of the leaf epidermis were prepared by epidermal peeling and stained with safranin. Transverse sections of leaf lamina and root were prepared using the paraffin method with a rotary microtome. They were then stained with safranin and fast green, examined using a light microscope, and their anatomical characteristics were described. The results showed that certain anatomical characteristics can be used for species identification, including distribution of stomata, presence of crystals, types of crystals, xylem arches in the root, shapes of the midrib and margin, and presence of starch grains. The key to species of Aerides species in Thailand based on anatomy characters is constructed. Anatomical features can be used for taxonomically important data and provide more information on the anatomical properties of Thai Aerides.
