Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the politics behind the government's policy on religious moderation within the context of Islamic religious education. Initially intended as a response to the rise of radicalism in Islamic religious education in Indonesia, the policy has instead transformed into another form of radicalism, driven by grassroots fanaticism and the rigid implementation of religious moderation by government institutions—particularly the Ministry of Religious Affairs. These institutions tend to eliminate ideas deemed radical or threatening to state stability without providing space for dialogue or seeking common ground. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review method, this study finds that the infiltration of religious moderation into the Islamic education curriculum is a political strategy by the state to hegemonize the Muslim community and suppress groups considered disruptive to national political stability. However, this effort has triggered resistance and symbolic violence among the public and educational institutions. The findings imply the urgent need for the government to reform the administration of Islamic religious education to ensure that religious moderation does not become a tool of symbolic violence: (1) the government must detach its political interests from religious education, (2) implement inclusive Islamic education across different schools of thought (madhhab) to foster a strong sense of moderation among students, and (3) minimize symbolic violence in religious education, as it contradicts the very values of religious moderation itself.

Abstract

This study examines the role of interpersonal communication and digital competence in the completion of final projects among students at IAIN Pontianak. The background of this study lies in the increasing challenges in completing final projects due to limited effective communication with academic advisors and insufficient digital skills. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and documentation involving 15 students and 5 academic advisors. The findings reveal that intensive interpersonal communication and adequate digital competence support the timely completion of final projects. However, some students face technological limitations and communication barriers that hinder progress. The contribution of this study lies in proposing an integrated framework of interpersonal communication and digital competence as a holistic approach in academic supervision, while also highlighting the psychosocial dimension of student mental well-being. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of developing technology-based academic supervision policies and providing psychological support in Islamic higher education to enhance the quality of final project completion.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) into an inclusive Islamic political party within Indonesia’s multicultural political landscape. Through an open political approach toward various groups, including non-Muslims, PKS demonstrates a significant strategic shift in its efforts to expand its mass base amid a plural society. Nonetheless, differences in perspectives within PKS have given rise to two main factions: the conservative Justice faction, which resists political compromise and emphasizes PKS’s identity as a dakwah-oriented party, and the more progressive Prosperity faction, which promotes party openness, supports pluralism, and encourages electoral modernization. This study applies Oliver Roy’s theory of political pragmatism in Islam, which posits a shift from an exclusive ideological orientation toward an inclusive and pragmatic political strategy. In this context, Islamism no longer focuses solely on rigid religious identity but transforms into a more pluralistic political movement that adapts to the parliamentary democratic system, emphasizing electoral strategies to broaden public support. The research employs a qualitative approach based on literature review and thematic interpretation. Findings indicate that PKS’s strategy reflects patterns of ideological adaptation by contextualizing Islamic values into universal issues, such as social justice, equality, anti-corruption, education, and welfare. The manifestation of this inclusive strategy is evident through the recruitment of members and the nomination of non-Muslim candidates, as well as the opening of political participation across religious lines. This adaptation does not aim to diminish PKS’s Islamic identity but rather reframes the party’s ideological message to align with the pluralistic, democratic, and pragmatic realities of Indonesian politics.

Abstract

This study advances the concept of metacultural logics to explain how pesantren-based religious authority is produced, circulated, and reproduced in contemporary Islamic preaching in Indonesia.  The research objects of this study are two public religious sermons delivered by Gus Baha and Gus Iqdam, prominent moderate traditionalist Muslim preachers, as circulated through offline preaching forums and digital media platforms. The article examines how rhetorical practices function not merely as persuasive strategies but as metacultural mechanisms embedded in the pesantren tradition. Employing a multi-method qualitative approach that integrates textual analysis of selected sermons and in-depth interviews with key informants, the study finds four interrelated metacultural logics shaping Gus Baha and Gus Iqdam’s religious rhetoric: intertextuality, sanad (scholarly lineage), gojlokan (light teasing), and metaphor.  Intertextuality operates as an epistemic logic through which pesantren knowledge is transmitted via layered textual engagement, while sanad functions as a moral-epistemological logic that defines religious authenticity through inherited scholarly genealogy. Gojlokan and metaphor serve as pedagogical and affective logics that translate pesantren ethics into vernacular and emotionally resonant forms. Beyond preserving and renewing the pesantren moral and epistemological foundations, these metacultural logics also enable the effective circulation of religious discourse in contemporary preaching contexts.

Abstract

This ethnographic study examines how a traditional Muslim community in Payabenua village, Bangka Island, Indonesia, negotiates Islamic identity amid globalization. Drawing on nine months of fieldwork (2024), the research explores the interplay between local traditions, global Islamic symbols, and social pluralism. Using cultural hybridity theory (Bhabha), multiple modernities framework (Eisenstadt), and everyday pluralism concepts, the study reveals three key findings: (1) global Islamic architectural forms coexist with local traditions through strategic appropriation—the new Middle Eastern-style mosque amplifies rather than displaces the traditional nganggung ritual; (2) potentially controversial symbols like niqab gain acceptance through mediation by local religious authorities (guru kampung) who integrate them into Shafi'i jurisprudential frameworks; (3) everyday pluralism grounded in economic interdependence and ritual reciprocity remains resilient despite Islamic revivalism. The study contributes theoretically by extending hybridity theory to rural contexts, demonstrating Islamic modernity through tradition revitalization rather than replacement, and revealing practice-based pluralism's durability. Findings challenge narratives portraying Muslim communities as passive recipients of global influences, instead revealing active, creative negotiation processes that produce distinctive hybrid modernities simultaneously global and local, modern and traditional, revivalist and pluralist.

Abstract

Among the issues in this nation that always have the potential to cause conflict and are easily provoked is the religious issue. This study not only captures religious moderation as a normative concept or institutional policy but also examines the process of internalizing its values through classical and contemporary literature that forms the Pondok Pesantren learning curriculum. The method used in this research is the qualitative research method. The research location includes three Pondok Pesantren: Daar el-Qolam in Tangerang, Darul Arqam in Garut, and Bahrul Ulum in Tambak Beras. The data collection techniques used in this study were in-depth interviews and participant observation. The data analysis used was qualitative data analysis. Based on the research findings and discussion, it can be concluded regarding the actualization of religious moderation values in Pondok Pesantren education: values are justice, balance, simplicity, tolerance, unity and brotherhood, honesty and truth, non-discrimination, and preserving civilization thru students at Islamic boarding schools. In implementing religious moderation values, Bahrul Ulum Jombang Pondok Pesantren demonstrates a more comprehensive approach compared to the two modern Pondok Pesantren that were the research objects. In addition to implementing the values of moderation through the formal curriculum, this Pondok Pesantren also instills these values thru the study of yellow books to actualize religious moderation. Meanwhile, Darul Arqam Pondok Pesantren in Garut and Daar el-Qolam in Tangerang, implement a curriculum that balances religious and general sciences. The application of religious moderation values in both Pondok Pesantren is strengthened through various extracurricular programs. This approach allows students to develop cross-cultural communication skills and tolerance.

Abstract

Malay as a “nation” in Asia is now no longer seen as having a central role in the development of a country, as happened in the 20th century, where Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei Darussalam became evidence of their contribution to the formation of countries in Southeast Asia. It raises a big question: What is actually happening to the Malay ethnic group today? This study attempts to look at the development of the Malay ethnic group in the Southeast Asian region from a communal historical perspective. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method with a historical approach. Based on the results of a critical analysis of historical data on the distribution of the Malay ethnic group in Southeast Asia, several conclusions were found, namely: 1) The Malay ethnic group is a unique ethnic group and has a vital role in the Southeast Asian region about the formation of national and state nationalism; 2) post-colonial, the Malay ethnic group has merged into various countries in Southeast Asia (Indonesia itself as its country of origin, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Thailand, as well as in the Philippines), as part of ethnic nationalism; 3) Until now, several countries have tried to make the Malay ethnic group their national identity, such as Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.
