Abstract

Vocational education requires students not only to have technical skills, but also good social and emotional abilities to face the world of work. Social-emotional learning based on self-management is one of the approaches implemented in SMKN PP Cilaku and SMKN 1 Cugenang Cianjur Regency to equip students with emotion management skills, communication, and readiness to face professional challenges. This study aims to examine the implementation of social-emotional learning in the two schools and identify the barriers faced in its implementation. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and document analysis with principals, teachers, students, and school counselors. The results showed that at SMKN PP Cilaku, experiential learning, mentoring and self-reflection methods helped students to improve their emotional awareness, while at SMKN 1 Cugenang, social simulation and role-playing approaches were emphasized to develop communication and social interaction skills. Although these methods have proven to be effective, there are still obstacles such as teachers' lack of understanding of the concept of social emotional learning, limited school policies, and minimal parental involvement in supporting students' social emotional development. Therefore, increased training for educators, stronger school policy support, and synergy between schools, parents, and industry are needed to optimize the application of social emotional learning in vocational education. This is an open-access article under the CC–BY-SA license.

Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of the Al-Miftah lil ‘Ulum method as a strategy for improving reading literacy skills regarding yellow books among the students of Miftahul Huda Islamic Boarding School located in Kalijambe, Sragen. The research question posed is: What is the impact of implementing the Al-Miftah lil ‘Ulum method on the enhancement of yellow book literacy among the students? This study employs a quantitative approach, utilizing structured questionnaires distributed to 20 students participating in the program for data collection. Descriptive statistical analysis is applied to interpret the data, focusing on frequency distribution and percentages. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Al-Miftah lil ‘Ulum method significantly enhances the students' ability to master the fundamentals of Nahwu and Sharf, independently translate Arabic sentences, and expand their vocabulary comprehension. Additionally, this method fosters increased motivation and engagement among the students in the study of yellow books. These findings underscore the considerable potential of structured methodological interventions in strengthening the literacy of classical texts within Islamic educational institutions. This study recommends the adoption of structured methods such as Al-Miftah lil ‘Ulum to improve literacy competencies within the pesantren environment.

Abstract

This research analyzes the philosophical contributions of Sunan Bonang in the development of Islamic education that is integrated with Javanese culture through a religious-cultural syncretism approach. The purpose of this study is to identify the foundational principles of Sunan Bonang's educational philosophy, to analyze the methods of transmitting Islamic values within the context of Javanese culture, and to evaluate the relevance of his thoughts to character formation in contemporary Islamic education. The research questions include: (1) What is Sunan Bonang's philosophical conception of harmonizing Islamic teachings with Javanese tradition? (2) What pedagogical strategies did Sunan Bonang employ to transform Islamic values through the medium of local culture? (3) To what extent is Sunan Bonang's religious-cultural syncretism relevant to character formation in the context of modern Islamic education? The methodology employed in this research utilizes a historical-philosophical approach with hermeneutical analysis of primary texts, including Suluk Wujil and Bonang, historical manuscripts from the Walisongo period, as well as observations of contemporary cultural practices that still uphold elements of Sunan Bonang's teachings. The findings of the study indicate that: (1) Sunan Bonang developed a tawhid-based educational philosophy manifested through symbols and narratives of Javanese culture; (2) His pedagogical strategies are multilayered, integrating the traditions of gamelan, tembang, and wayang as media for the transmission of Islamic values; (3) Sunan Bonang's syncretic approach demonstrates effectiveness in the contextualization of Islamic teachings without compromising theological essence; (4) The character formation model rooted in sufistic values combined with local wisdom creates a distinctive foundation for the identity of Nusantara Islam. The results of this study provide an alternative philosophical framework for the development of contemporary Islamic education that is responsive to cultural diversity and the challenges of globalization.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Congruence Evaluation Model in optimizing students’ comprehension and learning outcomes in Arabic language instruction at SD Al-Amin Sukoharjo. The research questions addressed are: (1) How is Arabic language learning implemented based on the Congruence Evaluation Model? (2) To what extent does this model influence students’ conceptual understanding and academic achievement? A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. The population consisted of fifth-grade students at SD Al-Amin Sukoharjo, with purposive sampling applied to select the participants. Research instruments included validated tests on Arabic comprehension and learning outcomes. Data were analyzed using t-tests and gain score analysis. The results reveal a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, indicating that students who received instruction through the Congruence Evaluation Model demonstrated greater improvements in both comprehension and academic performance. These findings suggest that the alignment between instructional objectives, processes, and outcomes—core to the Congruence Evaluation Model—enhances the effectiveness of Arabic language learning at the elementary level. This study recommends the integration of the Congruence Evaluation Model as a strategic alternative for formative and reflective assessment-based learning.

Abstract

Globalization presents new and complex challenges for the educational sector, particularly for traditional institutions such as Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study critically examines the concept, structure, and implementation strategies of an integrative curriculum innovation developed at Pondok Pesantren Darul Amanah Bedono, located in Semarang Regency, as a strategic response to these challenges. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with school leaders, teachers, and students, as well as analysis of curriculum documents and learning activities. The findings reveal that the pesantren has successfully designed and implemented an integrative curriculum model that combines the traditional diniyah curriculum—rooted in classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning)—with a national-standard general education curriculum. This integration is manifested not only in the content of instruction but also in management systems, pedagogical methods, and character education. By integrating spiritual, academic, and life skill dimensions, the curriculum innovation effectively addresses both the local needs of the pesantren and the global demands of contemporary education. Key strategies include balanced learning schedules, teacher professional development in integrative pedagogy, and the use of information technology to enhance the learning process. Moreover, the implementation of contextual and project-based learning approaches fosters the development of independent, critical, and collaborative learners. External collaborations with educational institutions and active alumni engagement further support the success of this initiative. Substantively, the integrative curriculum contributes to the production of pesantren graduates who excel in religious knowledge while also possessing essential 21st-century competencies such as digital literacy, intercultural communication, and critical thinking. Foundational pesantren values—such as tawadhu’ (humility), discipline, and sincerity—remain deeply embedded within this progressive transformation. This study suggests that the integrative curriculum model should be continuously refined and adapted in accordance with evolving socio-educational contexts through internal policy innovation, governmental support, and strengthened inter-pesantren networks. Such efforts are vital to ensuring the strategic role of pesantren in cultivating religious, adaptive, and globally competitive future generations.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of the lalaran method in increasing student learning motivation toward the Musthalah Hadith subject in class IX of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Pondok Pesantren Al Islam Darul Falah. Musthalah Hadith is a subject rich in technical terminology and abstract concepts, requiring a learning approach that can strengthen memorization ability and conceptual understanding. The lalaran method, based on intensive oral repetition, is one of the traditional pesantren (Islamic boarding school) methods that have proven effective in helping students master Islamic texts. The results show that implementing the lalaran method can increase student learning motivation, both intrinsically and extrinsically. Students became more active, and disciplined, and showed improved retention of the material. Additionally, this method strengthens the pesantren learning culture that emphasizes memorization skills and togetherness in the learning process. The implications of these findings provide a foundation for educators and madrasah administrators to adopt contextual learning methods based on pesantren.

Abstract

Inclusive and rehabilitative Islamic boarding schools such as the Ora Aji Islamic Boarding School face complex communication challenges amid the diversity of student backgrounds. This study aims to describe internal and external communication patterns, strategies, and communication barriers that occur in the pesantren environment. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data was obtained through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results showed that communication was arranged informally through the student assistance division and facilitated by media such as WhatsApp and HT. Communication strategies are carried out through a personal approach, regular meetings, and social activities with the community. The main obstacle lies in the background of the students and the limited resources of the management. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of an adaptive communication system based on Islamic values and a personal approach in supporting the success of education and rehabilitation programs in inclusive Islamic boarding schools.
