Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Platform of Emancipated Curriculum (PMM) in supporting professional and pedagogical competencies among English teachers participating in the Piloting 2 batch of the Program of Teachers Professional Education (PPG), which notably removed facilitator-led Zoom meetings. Using a survey research design with data collected via Google Forms from 30 English teachers, the study assessed their understanding of genre-based approaches—particularly those informed by systemic functional linguistics and the Derewianka model. Quantitative findings indicate a moderate grasp of these approaches, while qualitative responses reveal significant challenges in their practical application. Participants also expressed a need for enhanced professional development and better instructional materials. The results offer insights for refining the PPG process and underscore the potential benefits of expanding future research to include larger, more diverse samples and to investigate the impact of targeted programs on teachers’ mastery of genre-based strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of governance in open and distance learning universities in Indonesia, focusing on the role of dynamic capabilities. The research highlights the experience of Universitas Terbuka (UT) and its learning center, SALUT (Sentra Layanan Universitas Terbuka), in utilizing dynamic capabilities to enhance the quality of education and services. The study adopts a qualitative approach with a single case study design, focusing on SALUT DGCN as one of the pioneering SALUTs of UT. SALUT DGCN's experience provides valuable insights into the practical application of dynamic capabilities in open and distance learning. Data collection involved in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including SALUT DGCN managers and staff, as well as observations of SALUT DGCN's operational activities. The study also draws on secondary data from policy documents, official reports, and relevant publications to comprehensively understand the research context. Findings indicate that dynamic capabilities, including thinking ahead, thinking again, and thinking across, are crucial for UT and SALUT DGCN to adapt to the changing landscape of higher education. This research offers valuable insights into the successful implementation of dynamic governance in open and distance learning, providing practical recommendations for optimizing university governance.

Abstract

Language barriers significantly impact the academic achievement and motivation of international students at Universitas Indonesia, where Bahasa Indonesia is the primary medium of instruction. This study explores how linguistic challenges affect students' ability to engage in coursework, participate in discussions, and integrate into academic and social life. A quantitative research approach was employed, using a Google Form-based questionnaire distributed to international students, yielding 72 responses. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that over 90% of students faced challenges in academic writing, lecture comprehension, and subject-specific terminology, leading to reduced confidence and lower academic performance. Additionally, over 80% of students reported that language barriers affected their motivation and decisions regarding future academic opportunities. Despite the presence of language support programs, more than half of the respondents found them inadequate, highlighting a gap in institutional support. The study emphasizes the need for expanded bilingual resources, improved teaching strategies, peer mentorship, and the integration of technological tools such as AI-powered translation and subtitled lectures. Addressing these language-related challenges is crucial to enhancing student engagement, fostering academic success, and creating a more inclusive learning environment for international students.
