Abstract

Kalimantan is a region rich in cultural heritage and traditions, lived out by multi-ethnic communities such as the Dayak, Banjar, Kutai, and Malay. Local wisdom and customs play a crucial role in regulating social and spiritual life, as well as fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Values such as mutual cooperation, respect for nature, customary law, and religious and social rituals form the foundation of the cultural identity of the people of Kalimantan. However, modernization, globalization, and the exploitation of natural resources present serious challenges to the preservation of these traditions. Therefore, preservation efforts through education, cultural documentation, and strengthening the role of indigenous communities are crucial to maintaining the sustainability of Kalimantan's cultural heritage as part of Indonesia's national cultural heritage.

Abstract

This article discusses the entry and development of European cultural influences in Indonesia from the arrival of the Portuguese to the Dutch colonial period and its impact on social and cultural changes. The expansion of Europe driven by economic, political, and religious interests brought about changes in the fields of trade, administration, education, art, and culture. However, the people of the archipelago do not accept these influences passively, but respond to them through the process of acculturation. This process gave birth to the Indis culture as a form of mixing European and local cultures reflected in architecture, lifestyle, art, traditions, and culinary. This article emphasizes that the colonial cultural heritage in Indonesia is the result of cultural interaction and negotiation that forms Indonesia's multicultural identity.

Abstract

Aceh offers a profound philosophical reflection on sustainable development through its local wisdom, which acts as a civilization blueprint that inherently rejects greed. This study explores the role of customary institutions, such as Panglima Laot and Keujruen Blang, in managing natural resources through the lens of the Amanah (trust) philosophy. The research uses a qualitative approach to analyze how traditional practices, like Hukom Adat Laot and Meuseuraya, provide a community-based resource management system that is more effective than rigid bureaucracies. The results indicate that indigenous wisdom in Aceh is not merely a collection of artifacts but a navigation system tested by seasons and disasters, promoting environmental sustainability and social harmony. The study concludes that integrating this spiritual and ecological infrastructure into modern policy is essential for achieving inclusive and high-value development.

Abstract

This paper reviews the history of the entry and development of Islam in the archipelago which took place peacefully and gradually between the 7th to the 16th centuries AD. The process of Islamization is carried out through various main channels, namely trade, marriage, da'wah, politics, education, and Sufism. The main focus of the discussion lies in the phenomenon of acculturation, where Islamic values blend harmoniously with the local Hindu-Buddhist culture and indigenous beliefs, giving birth to a moderate and tolerant identity of "Islam Nusantara". In Java, the role of Wali Songo is central in integrating religious teachings through an artistic and cultural approach. Meanwhile, in North Sumatra, the Barus area and the Sultanate of Deli became an important starting point for the spread. The impact of this process is documented in various physical and non-physical relics, ranging from the distinctive architecture of mosques, palace structures, tomb traditions, to literary works and calligraphy art. This history proves that the success of Islam in Indonesia is inseparable from its ability to adapt to local wisdom without losing the essence of its spiritual teachings.

Abstract

This paper examines the historical development of gender relations in Indonesia and the ongoing struggle for gender equality from the pre-colonial period to the contemporary era. The study focuses on how social, cultural, political, and economic structures have shaped the roles and positions of women across different historical phases, including the pre-colonial era, colonial period, national independence, the New Order regime, and the post-Reformasi period. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature study method. Data were collected from books, academic journals, official reports, and historical documents relevant to gender studies in Indonesia.    The collected data were analyzed through thematic and historical analysis to identify patterns of continuity and change in gender relations. The findings reveal that gender roles in pre-colonial Indonesian societies were diverse and context-dependent, with some communities granting significant authority to women. Colonialism introduced rigid patriarchal structures that limited women’s public roles, while the nationalist movement reopened space for women’s participation. However, the New Order regime reinforced gender domestication through state ideology. The Reformasi era marked a turning point with the emergence of gender-responsive policies and women’s movements, although structural challenges such as patriarchy, gender-based violence, and unequal political representation persist. In conclusion, gender equality in Indonesia is a dynamic and ongoing process that requires sustained legal, educational, and social efforts to create a more just and inclusive society.

Abstract

This study examines the potential of the book "Everything about My Homeland" by Shelomi Angeli (Erlangga for Kids, 2019) as a companion media in strengthening multicultural literacy in social studies subjects at the junior high school level. The background of the study departs from the reality that Indonesia, with 1,340 ethnic groups and 1,211 regional languages (BPS, 2010), faces the challenge of diversity education that has not been adequately resolved by official textbooks. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study method, where the analysis is carried out based on the Miles and Huberman model (in Moleong, 2017) which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The analysis shows that this book contains seven categories of cultural content, namely traditional clothing, traditional houses, traditional culinary, traditional arts, tourist attractions, flora and fauna, as well as unique facts spread across all 34 provinces, resulting in more than 238 cultural topics in 256 pages. Research findings indicate substantial alignment between the textbook's content and the elements of Phase D Social Studies Learning Outcomes in the Independent Curriculum, particularly the Global Diversity dimension within the Pancasila Student Profile. However, the empirical effectiveness of this textbook's use has not been experimentally tested, requiring policy support and teacher training to ensure its benefits are felt equally.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of gadget addiction on the psychological, social, and mental health of adolescents. Gadgets, as modern electronic media, have become an integral part of adolescents' daily lives. However, excessive use of gadgets can cause serious negative impacts, particularly in psychological, social, and mental health aspects. The method used in this study is a literature review with a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting and analyzing various sources of scientific journals, books, and relevant articles from national and international sources. The results of the study indicate that gadget addiction in adolescents causes emotional instability, social isolation, decreased concentration in learning, sleep disorders, the growth of egocentric attitudes, the emergence of cyberbullying phenomena, and various symptoms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety. Triggering factors include individual psychological conditions, an unsupportive family environment, peer pressure, and addictive technology design. The study's conclusions emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving parents, educators, the government, and technology developers in guiding adolescents to use gadgets wisely to maintain a balance between the digital world and real life.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the culture, customs, and social life patterns of Indonesian society based on Koentjaraningrat's thoughts in his book, Socio-Cultural Anthropology. The approach used is a comparative historical approach through a review of books, scientific journals, and other relevant references. The results of the study show that Indonesia has a very diverse cultural wealth, with more than 300 ethnic groups, each of which has its own unique customs, languages, kinship systems, beliefs, and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. The main topics of discussion include: (1) the diversity of culture and ethnic groups in Indonesia, (2) customs and kinship systems that exist in society, and (3) social life, religion, and universal cultural elements. This study emphasizes that cultural elements are interconnected to form a unity of life, so that an understanding of socio-cultural anthropology is very important to strengthen unity and preserve the cultural heritage of the Indonesian nation .

Abstract

The social changes that occur in modern society are a compound phenomenon that cannot be explained comprehensively by a single theoretical framework. This article aims to analyze seven major social theories including civil society (Aristotle), instrumental individualism (Thomas Hobbes), social systems theory (Adam Smit), conflict theory (Karl Marx), consensus theory (Emile Durkheim), action (Max Weber), and phenomenological approaches (Alfred Schutz), comparatively in the context of social change in modern society, with special emphasis on their relevance to contemporary Indonesian social realities. The method used in this study is a literature study through various books, journals, and scientific sources related to social theory. The results of the study show that each character has a different view in understanding society, ranging from humans as social beings, the role of the state, economic systems, class conflicts, social solidarity, social actions, to individual subjective experiences. The novelty of this study is proven that differences of views show that social life can be understood through various complementary approaches (multidimensional Appproach).
