Abstract

Purpose – This paper aims to analyze the response to the prohibition on zakat (tithe) collection by private organizations in Aceh Indonesia. Qanun (Islamic regional law) No. 10/2007 explicitly prohibited private zakat organizations (Lembaga Amil Zakat (LAZ)) from collecting zakat as it is included in the government budget. However, there is no sanction for incompliance and private zakat organizations seek other funds for their activities. Design/Methodology/Approach – This paper is based on primary data from interviews in June 2013. Three private LAZs were interviewed on this specific case. Findings – This paper gives facts that each LAZ responded differently to the regulation. They still conduct the social activities without taking zakat as their source of funds. Practical Implications – This regulation caused uncertainty for LAZ; besides, they have to avoid what is prohibited in the regulation. However, this condition created some creativities of LAZ in order to survive and to service the community by promoting good programs. Originality/Value – This may be claimed as the first research on the area of prohibition on zakat (tithe) collection in Aceh Indonesia. Keywords: Zakat, organization, baitulmal, charity, Indonesia

Abstract

This research aims not only to understand the concept of peace in the Qur’an but also analyze Muslims’ contestation in Salatiga to lead to a peaceful life among religious believers. It requires an in-depth examination on dialectical perspectives between the ideal concept of peace in the Quran and the reality of a peaceful culture in the public sphere. Methodologically, this research combines literature review and semi-structured interviews to gather theoretical data based on social responses and literature of contemporary Qur’anic interpretation. The research subjects consist of (1) Muslims living with non-Muslim family members in the same house, (2) Muslims in a non-Muslim neighborhood, (3) religious figures, and (4) non-Muslims with Muslim family members. In order to interpret a special meaning of Qur’anic terms related to peaceful life, this research employs a hermeneutical approach of socio-thematic interpretation of the Qur’an. In conclusion, this research points out that Muslims in Salatiga play a significant role in building a peaceful life where some concepts, such as unity, freedom, honesty, and respect, are principles thriving vividly throughout society. Additionally, tolerance is a foundation of social interaction leading them to cooperate. Besides, several values, namely harmonization, tolerance, and coexistence, can be seen as dominant ideas within the communities, and practices such as cooperation and friendship can also be seen in their daily life. Thus, this research affirms that the Muslim majority can lead to tolerance and accommodate diversity as a way of life.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the key aspects of incorporating Islamic values into the curriculum design for Islamic higher education in Indonesia and Malaysia. By employing a qualitative approach and comparative study, this research examines two educational paradigms: the integration of knowledge and the Islamization of knowledge. Both models aim to bridge the gap of the dichotomy between modern sciences and Islamic values that has contributed to fragmented graduate competencies. Focusing on Arabic language education, the study highlights its pivotal role among the subjects taught in Islamic universities to facilitate the internalization of Islamic values and a medium for engaging with Islamic literature. As a medium for delivering Islamic teachings, Arabic language education is also essential for exploring Islamic primary texts such as the Qur’an and Hadith. Therefore, a strategically designed Arabic language curriculum is crucial, serving as a critical mechanism for internalizing Islamic values in Islamic universities. The findings reveal that both institutions share common goals: cultivating graduates who embody academic excellence alongside deep-rooted Islamic values and intellectual consciousness.

As in the archipelago such as Aceh, Minangkabau, Palembang, Banten, Demak, Banjar and Ternate, Gowa and Bone as the epicenter of the development of Islam in South Sulawesi is also influenced by Islamic teachings of tasawuf. The preachers who brought Islam to the archipelago were Sufis who taught Sufism. During this happening contestation and clash between the philosophical color of Ibn Arabi and tasawuf al-Gazali, then Sufism's style that developed in South Sulawesi society successfully reconciled these two domains which then called Neosufisme. The main figure of Sufism in this period is Sheikh Yusuf al-Makassari who developed Tarekat khalwatiyah Yusufiyah and Sheikh Abdul Munir Syamsul Arifin developed Khalwatiyah Sammaniyah. This tarekat then gives influence to the people of South Sulawesi, especially in the Kingdom of Gowa for ethnic Makassar and the Kingdom of Bone for ethnic Bugis. The influence of Sufism is still being felt in various aspects

Abstract

The stereotype of Islam as an extremist religion is often associated with adherence in a good-looking character to the practices of ritual piety. This study aims to discuss the Hadith that allegedly refers to the presence of good-looking phenomenon from the prophetic period. The study uses a descriptive qualitative research design which relates to the basis of critical analysis through an interdisciplinary approach combining isnād-cum-matn and socio-religious phenomenology. The results indicate that the Hadith good-looking is ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) based on the review of its sanad transmission and examination on its matn. The good-looking trait is attributable to the emptiness of morality in the practice of Islamic spirituality. This vacuity is induced by religious insights focused solely on theological and normative viewpoints. The solution is to spread moral teaching and moderate religious values proactively through different methods and techniques, such as virtual proselytizing in social media.

Abstract

This study aims to depict the policies of peaceful cultural coexistence implemented by the Surakarta city government over the past decade. The research addresses two main questions: (1) What regulations have been formulated by the Surakarta city government to promote cultural coexistence? (2) How has the city government enforced the regulations to ensure cultural coexistence within Surakarta society? Data were collected by examining primary and secondary sources and analyzed using the cultural coexistence theory developed by Fredrik Barth, which identifies three main elements forming peaceful cultural coexistence: adaptability, pluralism, and equity, or the fair fulfillment of basic rights. The findings show that the Surakarta city government has attempted to establish fair and inclusive regulations. However, a significant shortcoming lies in the enforcement of these regulations, particularly against radical Islamic groups that refuse to adapt and respect pluralism.  Consequently, it is essential to encourage government authorities to adopt a more assertive law-enforcement approach, ensuring that all individuals learn together, adhere to regulations, and respect differences among the various groups in society.

Abstract

Tarekat or tarīqah is the Muslim spiritual path toward direct knowledge (maʿrifah) or ultimate truth (ḥaqq) of God. This paper aims to describe the Sufism school teaching of Tarekat Rinjani in Besuki Village, Banyumas Regency. This research is also to reveal laku batiniyah and lahiriyah (spiritual and physical practices) of Tarekat Rinjani. Cultural anthropology research was conducted to achieve the objectives through participatory observation and in-depth interviews for collecting the data. Tarekat Rinjani is one of the local Javanese tarekat that existed within Javanese communities. In this tarekat, the members must carry out Laku Kendalisada ritual consisting of two parts; spiritual and physical practices, to reach the love of God. Spiritual practices were done by managing hearts, minds, and reciting wirid, while physical practices were done by loving the Republic of Indonesia, helping others regardless of religion, groups, and ethnics, and making spiritual journeys to places called as wingit. In conclusion, Tarekat Rinjani is classified as a ghairu mu’tabarah, which is not a well-recognized Sufi order based on Sharia and included in the creed of Sunni Islam, since it is typical of Banyumas Sufi-syncretic tarekat with non-mutashil sanad that is not directly connected to the Prophet Muhammad.

Abstract

Fiqh Nusantara which is relevant to Indonesian Muslims is Fiqh that is suitable for the personality and character of the Indonesian people so that it can meet their needs. The importance of taking Fiqh stipulations from the results of Ijtihad that is more in line with the needs of the Nusantara community makes Fiqh not rigid in applying it. Fiqh Nusantara exists to revive the Fiqh so that it can participate in shaping the directions and movements of Indonesian people’s lives. This article aims at analyzing the reconstruction of Fiqh Nusantara, by developing the methodology of Ijtihad (Process of legal reasoning in rationalizing law based on the Qur’an and Sunnah) to formulate Fiqh (Islamic law) that is compatible with Indonesian people. The research used qualitative methods with juridical-sociological approaches. The result of this research shows that Fiqh Nusantara evolves along with the introduction of Islam in Indonesia which is known as Nusantara at that time. The reconstruction of the Fiqh Nusantara is done by reinterpreting the Shara theorem contained in traditional Fiqh, by reading the conditions of the community to realize the objectives of Islamic law, while referring to the Mazhab (school of thought) and Ijtihad as an effort to solve problems that occur in Indonesia by considering local wisdom, traditions, or customs.
