Abstract

This article reexamines Samsuri's concept of a complement clause. Acomplement clause in an embedded transformed sentence functions to complement a nounphrase (as a subject or an object), a verb phrase, an adjective phrase, a numeral phrase, anda prepositional phrase (as a predicate in a matrix clause). The complement clauseembedded into a matrix clause complements a certain phrase in the matrix clause.Embedding a complement clause into a matrix clause uses certain embedding particles. The relational meaning of the complement clause and the main clause in an embeddedtransformed sentence can be identified on the basis of the syntactic meaning of theembedding operator employed. A complement clause as a combined clause complements acertain phrase in a main/matrix sentence, whereas an adverbial clause is the basic clausethat gives explanation to the main/matrix sentence. Keywords: complement clause, matrix cluse, combined clause, embedded transformation

Abstract

There has been an interesting phenomenon beginning late in the 20stcentury and lasting until early in the 21 century in Indonesian literary history: thegreat number of women writers suddenly producing literary works. In denial of theidea that it has been a phenomenon occurring all of a sudden, there has been aprecedent that could not be ignored: the number of Indonesian women writerscoming into activity far before the 1920s, the period becoming a milestonemarking the start of modern Indonesian literature, itself resulting from an impactof Western acculturation. The impact appeared first in the person named Kartini, awoman writer of some renown, whose achievement in the literary world is oftenunmentioned. The absence of women writers in the past from lists of knownwriters was often related to activities of placing their role on the sidelines by, forexample, not categorizing them writers of literary works or writers of qualityliterature (they being considered merely writers of popular literature) orcategorizing them merely happy-go-lucky writers and not the mainrepresentatives of their generation of writers. One may wonder whether the recentacknowledgement of Ayu Utami in Angkatan 2000 Sastra Indonesia as a pioneerin novel writing has been one of the strategies to bring about something contrary towhat has happened to those women writers in the past. It seems that the recentemergence of the aforementioned great number of women writers has not beenautomatically related to the efforts made by the feminist movement. A writer whohas made efforts for the sake of Kartini's fate is a male writer: Pramudya AnantaToer. Keywords : women writers, feminism, Indonesian literary history, role ofhistorical writing

Abstract

In Indonesia, switching from one language to another language is a commonphenomenon because Indonesian speakers are bilinguals. They use two or morelanguages, for example, Indonesian, English, or/and their own local language in a seriesof communication practices. With regard to the study of codeswitching, three perspectivescan be used. They include pragmatic, sociolinguistic, and linguistic analyses. Of the threeperspectives, analyzing codeswitching from a linguistic perspective seems to be interestingand challenging as the analysis gives an emphasis on the internal structure of thecodeswitching itself. This article deals with code switching from English to Indonesian orvice-versa analyzed from grammatical aspects as part of the linguistic analysis. It aims atreviewing the grammatical rules underlying the code-swictching.Keywords: code-switching, grammatical analysis

Abstract

A mind map is a graphic form showing how related ideasare organized. Useful as a graphic organizer of ideas, it is a conceptmap made on the basis of the principles of how the brain works, thatis, through association and imagination, simultaneously maximizingthe function of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Its essenceis that the main idea is placed in the middle and then, regarded asits center, it is then connected with lines to supporting ideas havingcertain associations with it.A mind map can be used to help develop skills in writing andreading texts written in such a language as German.
