Abstract

Affective dimension is one that must be assessed. Unfortunately, there is no learning that teaches students specifically how to recognize and control affective. Therefore, this study provides training to students on meta-affective strategies during science learning. The Static-group pretest-posttest design was chosen as the research method because it compares integrated training (facilitated by the teacher) and separate training (independent by students). MATS (Meta-Affective Trait Scale) questionnaire was adapted by adding 34 statements so that the total number is 51 statements. There were two experimental groups, each consisting of 50 students. Statistical tests show that there is no difference in students' meta-affective in integrated training and separate training. However, analysis per statement showed that separate training were better at recognizing and regulating meta-affective. In addition, in both integrated training and separate training, it is equally difficult to reduce negative emotions. This result implies that science learning should also focus on the affective and teacher should not give negative labels to students.

Abstract

Abstract

Symbol sense refers largely to an ability to give meaning and to see important structures in symbols, expressions, formulas, and equations. This ability shows an algebraic proficiency in dealing with symbolic representations and is considered important for pre-service mathematics teachers for their future careers. This study aims to investigate pre-service mathematics teachers’ symbol sense ability when dealing with equations. To do so, we set up a qualitative case study. First, after conducting a literature study, we designed symbol sense tasks according to symbol sense characteristics on the topic of equations. Second, we administered an individual written test involving 31 pre-service mathematics teachers (18-19-year-old) at the beginning of the School Mathematics course. Third, we analyzed written work using a symbol sense perspective. The results showed that about two-thirds of the participants lacked symbol sense since they tend to use more procedural strategies than symbol sense strategies in solving equations.ABSTRAKKepekaan simbol secara umum dapat diartikan sebagai kemampuan untuk memaknai dan melihat struktur penting dalam simbol, bentuk aljabar, rumus, dan persamaan.

Abstract

Student conceptions provide valuable information for understanding learning difficulties and provide insight into how they can be addressed appropriately. Analyzing students' conceptions can also provide insight into what concepts are troublesome or serve as concepts affecting learning. Using the Interview About Event-Mental Model Diagnostic Test (TDM-IAE), twenty-one high school and university students' conceptions, troublesome knowledge, and threshold concepts for understanding the effect of catalyst to reaction rate were identified. Students mostly held partial mental models or mental models with misconceptions in which three concepts were considered troublesome and threshold concepts for understanding the effect of catalyst on reaction rate.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the experiences experienced by students regarding optimizing the use of digital module-based LMS in post-pandemic differential calculus lectures. This study's qualitative descriptive method was chosen and involved 46 third-semester students at one of the tertiary institutions in Indonesia who have experienced online and offline classes. Questionnaire and interview data analysis was carried out through identification, clarification, reduction, analysis, and description techniques according to the problem under study. The study results show that the sudden shift from face-to-face to online learning has positive aspects in the form of documentation of lecture activities and presentation of digital-based and varied lecture content. The learning videos were most in demand by the participants because they had advantages over other displays. The weaknesses in implementing online lectures are more technically related (internet or electricity network stability). The positive things detected from online courses can be followed up after the pandemic, especially in the development of LMS content which can be integrated into face-to-face classes

Abstract

Studies have uncovered that educators, scientists, and policymakers are concerned that students' interest in pursuing science has grown visibly smaller. Recent Indonesian Ministry of Education data even suggested that the number of students enrolled in science majors was only a fifth of students enrolled in economics majors. This paper investigated factors contributing to why students' decided to pursue science majors as subjects to study and how these factors illuminated the steps that can be taken to improve how students see science and renew their faith and interest in pursuing science for their future careers.

Abstract

The ecosystem is a multidiscipline and complex subject which interrelated with other biological concepts, making it challenging to understand and may lead to cognitive overload. This paper analyzed the effects of prior knowledge activation using video on students' cognitive load when learning about the ecosystem. Data were obtained from prior knowledge tests, a task complexity worksheet, a subjective rating scale, and reasoning ability tests as learning achievement. The effect of prior knowledge activation using video on intrinsic cognitive load (ICL) and extraneous cognitive load (ECL) was evaluated and discussed.
