Abstract

Examining disaster reports in Indonesia is critical, as it provides essential insights into people perceptions and reactions to the frequent natural disasters. Disaster reports were examined through its communicative element including attitude to see the viewpoints of the newspaper towards disaster reports. The objectives of this research are to categorize attitudes, explain how attitudes are realized, and explain why attitudes are realized in disaster reporting in Indonesian newspaper, especially The Jakarta Post (TJP). Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as the analytical framework, a qualitative method was employed. The data is analyzed using Martin and White's theory of appraisal (2005). A corpus of 14 TJP newspaper articles on Indonesian natural disasters published in 2021 is broken down into clauses denoting attitude. The results of the study indicate: 1) there are three different attitude types, with appreciation being the most prevalent and having a predominately negative polarity, 2) the attitude realization reveals that TJP is the most dominant appraiser, followed by the authorities, and 3) the realization is attributed to two themes namely self-claimed recognition and neglect of self-failure, and one tone multiple perspectives which means negative attitudes dominantly voiced by different appraisers. The themes reveal the newspaper's concealed ideology points to a narrative of critique and disillusionment, which may shape the readers' understanding of the disasters and the associated societal responses.

Abstract

The flexibility of utterance structure can be influenced by semantic factors. At this level, structures can vary in terms of the positions of the constituents, namely subject, predicate, or object. To see how far semantics plays a role in the flexibility of structures, this research aims to investigate how the semantic reversibility of agent-target influences the structure of the resulting BISINDO Yogyakarta signs. The data source for this research was video-recorded signs that had been transcribed into utterances. The data collection instrument used was a collection of pictures that was used to stimulate deaf individuals to produce signed utterances. The results showed that there were differences in the resulting structure. (1) Non-reversible utterance structures tended to produce single-clauses with various patterns dominated by SPO and SOP structures. This diversity was predominantly influenced by the classification of targets, appropriate hand movements, and the omission of the agents. Meanwhile, reversible stimuli tended to produce two structures, namely single-clauses dominated by SPO and multi-clauses dominated by SPO P. The multi-clause structure was the structure that dominated reversible utterances. The complexity of the structure of this reversible content was characterized by an agent-target indexical description, and the involvement of actions/expressions of action targets. This proved the notion that the indexical description found in almost all multi-clause structures was the preference of deaf individuals in avoiding potential ambiguity between agent-target. Just like spoken languages universally, sign languages such as BISINDO in the Yogyakarta region and BISINDO in the Jakarta region also shared linguistic features.

Abstract

Since English is not widely spoken in Indonesia, most students find it challenging to acquire the language, particularly when it comes to reading. Pupils exhibit low reading enthusiasm, boredom, and shyness. Therefore, teachers need to find a suitable teaching strategy. Hello English as a new application that promotes interactive and creative learning for users, especially students might be the solution. So, this study aims to find out the effectiveness of the Hello English application on students' learning motivation and reading skills at the tertiary level. This study is quasi-experimental research. Two classes were selected by the researcher to serve as the control and experimental groups using random sampling. Data is gathered by the researcher via questionnaires and tests. The independent sample t-test, descriptive statistics, and the N-Gain score formula were used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that the features in the Hello English program such as report cards, chat forums, games, dictionaries, and reading exercises boost students' motivation and reading skills. In conclusion, compared to conventional teaching methods, the Hello English application has a greater impact on students' reading skills, learning motivation, and both at the same time. These findings suggest that the features in the Hello English application were created to make learning English enjoyable for students and improve their comprehension of textual content.

Abstract

The evolution of technology has significantly influenced the realm of literature. Once predominantly disseminated through oral and print mediums, literary works are now increasingly emerging in digital formats. The emergence of digital literature phenomena has impacted literary works' processes, outcomes, and production. Digital literature is not merely termed 'digital' due to its medium; it also entails form and regulatory framework differences. Unlike conventional literary works published in print, the production of digital literature is characterized by swiftness and demands rapidity. Employing netnography methodology with a descriptive approach to social change, this article explores the regulation of digital literature production, innovations in digital literary forms, the process of producing digital literature, and the changes occurring in print literature. The analytical process involves observing several platforms publishing digital literature, examining printed literary products, collecting regulatory data from various digital literary platforms, presenting the data, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal that each digital literary platform has distinct regulations, unlike major print publishers with nearly uniform regulations. Furthermore, the rapid development of digital literature indirectly compels print literature to showcase greater creativity in marketing efforts to withstand the onslaught of innovative digital literary products in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Reading English text is often regarded as a difficult task by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students during their individual reading time. Therefore, this research investigates the impact of a small group discussion on ESP students' online text reading performance and strategies. The quantitative research, employing a pre-experimental design, purposively recruited 90 students from the Computer Science and Engineering Faculty. The data were collected through pre- and post-assessments on reading comprehension and a survey on reading strategies. Analyzed using SPSS 27.0, the data of the research show that the small group discussion highly affects reading performance of ESP students. Besides, their reported reading strategy use demonstrates a high frequency of use in all three strategy categories (PROB, GLOB, SUP), with no significant difference found in all categories by age and major. In conclusion, the implementation of a small group discussion in the ESP classroom can effectively improve the online text reading performance and develop reading strategies of the students. It also positively implies that educators can employ a small group discussion to promote other reading aspects in various educational settings.

Abstract

The interplay of gender, ethnicity, and religious identifications plays an important role in the daily lives of Indonesians (Bertrand, 2004; Hoon, 2013; Ikasari, 2009; 2020; Suryadinata, et al., 2003).This study looks at Indonesian young girls' ways of being ethnic and religious, in relation to their schooling experiences to determine the manner in which these schoolgirls construct their ethnic and religious identities in the school environment. It is expected to add on to previous and current studies of women/girls in the Indonesian context. Located in a public secondary co-educational school in Yogyakarta, the study involved three schoolgirls from the Chinese ethnicity and Christian religion. Drawing on cultural studies and feminism of identity and difference as the theoretical and methodological framework, the study attempted to explore Indonesian schoolgirls' experiences and constructions of ethnicity and religion. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using case study as its method. The research data were collected from free-format, short autobiography essays written by the participants, individual and group interviews, and observation as well as online communications. Data analyses were initially carried out through data coding as determined by the research questions. The findings show that, first, the three ethnic-religious groups in this study namely the Chinese-Kristiani girls set up binaries of their essentialised understandings of being ethnic and religious members. Second, there are different ways of learning shaped by their ethnicity and religion. These two identities, in turn, shape their learning outcomes within and beyond their schooling site.

Abstract

This article explores verbal violence against women on TikTok to uncover the underlying factors contributing to the verbal violence. Using a qualitative approach, we examine verbal violence on the @bacotinajagpp TikTok account from March 2022 to December 2023. The analysis is grounded in feminist theory in Linguistics, which examines how language perpetuates gender-based oppression and reinforces patriarchal norms. Methodologically, the study utilizes a qualitative content analysis of TikTok posts to identify patterns in language use and strategies of verbal violence. The findings show that verbal violence represented in the language used in the account can be categorized into four types (sexual, appearance-related, intellectual, and character-based), manifested in five language variations (hate speech, abusive language, offensive language, aggressive language, and harassing language) and articulated through four strategies (general statements, personal attacks, intimidation, and manipulation). These patterns underscore the use of verbal violence to reinforce men's social dominance by threatening, insulting, and demeaning women, thereby perpetuating negative stereotypes. This article aims to raise awareness of these issues to reduce verbal violence on social media and mitigate negative stereotypes about women. By doing so, the study seeks to cultivate a more respectful online environment and diminish misogynistic attitudes.
