Abstract

This study aims to describe the existence and functions of the mamaca oral literaturein Pamekasan Regency, Madura. The data source was the “Rukun Sampurna” mamacaoral literature community in Jalmak Village, Pamekasan, Madura. The data were collectedthrough observations and interviews. They were analyzed by means of the emic and eticapproaches. These two approaches were simultaneously employed to attain the objectivityof research findings. The findings are as follows. First, the mamaca oral community isdeveloped by the “Rukun Sampurna” community through regular performances andfulfillment of the community’s requests or invitations for special events. Second, themamaca oral community stimulates the community to move to a better condition throughthe delivered messages. The audience will get inspiration for life spirit, optimism,enlightenment, and happiness.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the moral values in Javanese traditional expressions and Chinese proverbs. The data on Javanese expressions were collected from Javanese course books and Kasusastran Jawi and those on Chinese proverbs were collected from Pepatah China Kuno untuk Generasi Modern. The data were analyzed by classifying the themes and comparing Javanese traditional expressions with Chinese proverbs. The findings are as follows. First, the themes include (a) self-control, (b) ethics of marriage and social life, (c) leadership ethics, and (d) ethics of managing a country and nation. Second, the similarity in themes shows a common way of life in Javanese and Chinese societies. This can serve as a means of understanding the cultures of the two ethnic groups so that there is a close relationship and mutual respect.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to describe the romantic ideology manifestation in Acep ZamzamNoor’s poems, in terms of: (a) romantic feelings, (b) romantic nature, (c) romanticimagination, and (d) romantic mythology. The data sources were ten poetry anthologiesby Acep Zamzam Noor (AZN) that were published in 1982-2007. The data analysis stepswere: (a) reading and checking the selected data, (b) marking and classifying data, and (c)analyzing data based on relevant theories, namely those of new historicism, archeologicalknowledge, and psychology of religion. The research findings are as follows. First, theromantic ideology manifestation related to feelings comprises: (a) longing, (b) loneliness,(c) anxiety, and (d) death. Second, the romantic ideology manifestation related to natureincludes: (a) sea, (b) mountain, and (c) sky. Third, the romantic ideology manifestationrelated to imagination comprises: (a) production imagination and (b) reproductionimagination. Abstract

This study aims to describe forms of, strategies in, and factors causing symbolic conflicts in the discourse of Special Aids for Students (SAS). The data sources were texts on SAS in mass media. This study employed the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough. The data were analyzed in three steps, i.e. text analysis (description), process analysis (interpretation) and socio-cultural practice analysis (explanation). The findings can be explained as follows. First, the forms of symbolic conflicts are the introduction and refusal of meaning, logic, perspective, and value. Second, the strategies of symbolic conflicts include making them subtle or vague and making them positive or natural. Third, the factors causing symbolic conflicts include differences in habits and social structure and those in discourse executors’ interests.

Abstract

This study aims to describe cohesive devices, discourse making elements, and children’s characters in children’s English stories. This study employed the microstructural and macrostructural discourse analysis. The data source was http:// www.britishcouncil.org/ kids/stories. The findings are as follows. First, the Englishstories under study use cohesive devices such as references, substitutions, ellipses, and conjunctions. Second, the stories present positive descriptions of children, showing that they can get along well, are pleasant, are altruistic, are close to families and friends, have dynamic and creative activities, and can solve problems.

Abstract

This study aims to describe female characters’ self-defense against conflicts. It was carried out using the qualitative approach. The general finding shows that women use the self-defense against conflicts to avoid social and psychological disharmony. Female characters in Indonesian fictional prose serve as authors’ means of expressing ideas. To develop characters’ characterization, authors make female characters face a variety ofconflicts in life. They use techniques to develop characters with capabilities of defending the self against conflicts through an attempt reflecting an attitudinal wisdom in problem solving. The characters’ capabilities are attributable to life experience, education, tradition, life principles, and religions they believe in.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the maintenance of the Muna language in Muna Regency,Southeast Sulawesi. The data were collected using the ethnographic method by meansof observations and unstructured interviews. The analysis was referred to micro andmacrosociolinguistic theories. The findings are as follows. First, the population growthdoes not support the survival of the Muna language because of the increasing number ofmultiethnic newcomers. Second, the young generation’s mobility gives more space to theuse of Bahasa Indonesia. Third, the maintenance of the Muna Language is supported byelder people in villages but it is not supported by educated families, multiethnic families,elite groups, and school environments. Fourth, demographically, people aged 0 - 19 are notactive enough in using the Muna language, those aged 20 - 49 do not care about the useof the Muna language, and those aged 50 or more still use the Muna language actively.
