Abstract

This paper tries to analyze the method of demonstation of al-Farabi in his book under title Manṭiq ‘inda al-Fārābī: Kitāb al-Burhān. In the book, al-Fārābī talked about the method of demonstration to get the right conclusion and compatible with the rational proofs. This method is a kind of syllogism which is different from any other syllogisms. This method gives us the rational proofs which are compatible to reality.

Abstract

This paper will elaborate the conceptions and meanings of Islam, both etymologic-ally and terminologically as well, through historical and doctrinal-theological perspectives respectively. Even though, Islam, terminologically, denotes the Prophet’s religion and a formal system fetched and assembled by the Prophet Muhammad—as narrated by the two well-known Prophetic sayings (Hadīth)—however, according to the Qur’ān, it (islām, with small letter /i/) signifies ‘to surrender.’ Within such Qur’ānic context, the word islām is not exclusively referred to the community or for the believers of Muhammad’s sharī‘a per se. In the course of Muslim history, the word and meaning of islām are believed being an institution. Yet, to examine the Qur’ān, the article will acquire lots of the Qur’ānic verses conveying such word and meaning of true islām in the function of ‘religion of resignation.’ As such, islām is actually the religion belonging to the whole prophets and apostles who taught a total capitulation to God. Moreover, islām connotes submission of personal quality as a person to God, whatever religion and belief he embraces. However, in addition, Islam cannot remain lonesome by itself, unless is being associated with īmān (belief, faith) and ihsān (God’s omnipresent.)

Abstract

In classical Sufistic interpretation, it was taught about how to cultivate one's heart. This is done so that a servant can interact directly with Him. While in the modern world today it is taught about the Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) which incidentally has the same basis in the management of "emotion" and "heart" as a means to achieve success in the world and the hereafter. Between Sufistic interpretation and ESQ there is a close relationship. By using descriptive-analytical methods, this article finds that Sufistic interpretation has direction, orientation and goals that are in line with ESQ. Sufistically, there is a Qur'anic interpretation that can be used as a medium to increase emotional and spiritual skills (ESQ). In the context of Sufism practices, a very real contribution is found that one's level of religiousness is in line and closely related to one's ESQ.

Abstract

This paper discusses Ibn 'Āshūr's interpretation of the verses which serve as the basis of the Tawḥīd ḥākimiyyah concept. Despitebeing an expert in Islamic law, Ibn ‘Āshūr did not perceive the Tawḥīd ḥākimiyyah verses as a basis for the necessity to apply Shari'a law at the level of government. Perhaps the thought of "hākimiyyatullāh" had not developed in the time of Ibn 'Āshūr. Another reason, Ibn ‘Āshūr used a linguistic-sociological contextual approach when interpreting the verses claimed to be the basis of the Tawḥīd ḥākimiyyah concept. With this approach, Ibn ‘Āshūr did not use the Tawḥīd ḥākimiyyah verse to judge the behavior of the Muslims because in fact these verses were revealed to explain the behavior of the polytheists who opposed Islamic da'wah.

Abstract

Charles Taylor is a Canadian Philosopher who is very critical to the idea of distributive justice from the liberal thinkers. One of them is John Rawls, especially his thought in A Theory of Justice. Then, this paper will examine Taylor’s view on that idea. To do so, I analyze Taylor’s Philosophy and the Human Sciences. Following Aristotelian way of thinking on the importance of society to achieve the human good, Taylor criticizes some basic assumptions which support the liberal idea of justice. For him, the emergence of the idea of distributive justice is caused by the failure of the modern thinkers to understand the essence of human being and its relation to society.

Abstract

This writing analyzes literary works of Archipelgo, in which the works are sufis in manner and are influenced by Persian tradition. Among those works there are four foremost literatures i.e. Tāj al-Salātṭīn (Crown of Kings), Hikayat Amīr Ḥamzah, Hikayat Muḥammad ‘Alī Ḥanafiyyah, and Hikayat Burung Pingai. In a while, such Persian inspiration can be found in the form of poetry, like rubā‘ī, ghazal, mathnawī and qiṭ‘ah, as discovered within Tāj al-Salātīn and Hikayat Amīr Ḥamzah. In another case, the inspiration relates to the use of symbols of bird (symbol of human soul or spirit) like in Hikayat Burung Pingai, but sometimes such influence is just in aesthetic horizon and paradigm.
