Abstract

This article discusses how the Qur’an and the perceptions of some Indonesian Muslim interpreters or thinkers inform and discuss the nature of women. It’s just that information and perceptions are extracted and analyzed through descriptive-analytic methods, read constructively. This study found that the concept of female nature has Qur'anic relevance, perceptual relevance and conceptual relevance. The study also found that from a constructivist perspective, women’s natural values were fluid. That is, in understanding the phenomenon of women and efforts to empower them, it is advisable to understand the perception of the nature of women who are held by the community, because what they understand and hold about the nature of women determines the spaciousness and narrowness of the region and opportunities for women’s involvement itself. In other words, failure to understand this aspect will correlate with the results of the empowerment effort.

This writing is a mapping of philosophical notions by Sunnī ‘ulamā’ (scholars) on leadership (imāmah, imamate) within Islam. The argumentation of imamate embraces seven topics: 1) the necessity of imamate, 2) imamate election, 3) imām’s qualification, 4) religious authority vs. temporal, 5) the true imamate vs. monarchy, 6) single or plural imām, 7) imām’s tasks. The article also questions a referred model of ancient imamate, the so called caliphate-state, which quarrels with the temporary system, nation-state.

Abstract

The paper describes an analysis of al-Ghazālī’s political thinking concerning any requirements for the appointment of states kingship which were filled with concessions that caused controversies. The paper reveals the views of experts who claim that Sunni political thought, in which al-Ghazālī’s thought is included, has been characterized by giving legitimacy. By analyzing qualitative data and using historical-critical approach, this paper shows that al-Ghazālī's thought regarding legitimacy by making concessions to the power he defended had made his thoughts were considered as a controversy and arose criticism. However, history proves that al-Ghazālī continued to do that controversy for the continuation of the Abbasid Caliphate which ruled de jure and for the existence of the de facto power of the Saljuk Dynasty who at that time gained political and dogmatic pressure from The Isma’ilis.

Abstract

Research on the Roleof Santri Middle Class in Democratization Process in Indonesia was conducted in three cities in Java, i.e. the Cities of East Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. The research was conducted by using quantitative approach and survey method. The data collection method used in this research is direct interview technique, by using questionnaire instrument that was asked to the respondents directly through face to face. There are two types of hypotheses to be proved through this survey research, they are associative and comparativehypotheses. The associative hypothesis verification aims to prove whether there is significant relationship between dependent variable (Y) and independent variable (X) as predictor or not. Inthis research context, the relationship between role in the democratization process as the dependent variable (Y) with predictor independent variables(X) will be tested, which are the literacy of political and economic information(X1), satisfaction to public services (X2), trust in democratic institutions (X3), access to political resources (X4), ideology (X5), and relative deprivation (X6).The comparative hypothesisverificationaims to prove whether there is significant difference between two or more different respondent groups or not. Based on this research purpose, the differences of two respondent groups will be proved comparatively related to their role in the democratization process; they are (1) santrimiddle-class group and (2) groups of santrinon-middle class. There are two types of hypotheses to be proved through this survey research, they are associative and comparative hypotheses. The associative hypothesis verification aims to prove whether there is significant relationship between dependent variable (Y) and independent variable (X) as predictor or not. In this research context, the relationship between role in the democratization process as the dependent variable (Y) with predictor independent variables (X) will be tested, which are the literacy of political and economic information (X1), satisfaction to public services (X2), trust in democratic institutions (X3), access to political resources (X4), ideology (X5), and relative deprivation (X6). The comparative hypothesis verification aims to prove whether there is significant difference between two or more different respondent groups or not. Based on this research purpose, the differences of two respondent groups will be proved comparatively related to their role in the democratization process; they are (1) santri middle-class group and (2) groups of santri non-middle class. From the result of hypothesis associative verification, it is proved that all variables X correlated positively and significantly to variable Y. With this result, then the literacy of political and economic information (X1), satisfaction to public services (X2), trust in democratic institutions (X3), access to political resources (X4), ideology (X5), and relative deprivation (X6) are proved to correlate positively and significantly to the role in democratization (Y).From the result of comparative hypothesis verification, the X2 value of 1363.44 is obtained. This value is greater than the X2 value of table at 88 degrees of freedom and significance level of 0.5. With this result, then the null hypothesis which stated that there is no significant difference between santri middle class and other class groups is rejected. This means the alternative hypothesis that stated otherwise is received. Conclusion based on this examination result is that there are significant differences between the role of santri middle class and other group samples in the democratization process.

Abstract

In the golden age of Islamic civilization, science was well developed. The developed sciences are not only Islamic sciences which are the study of Al-Qur'an and Hadith texts, but also other sciences including: Astronomy, al-Jabar, Chemistry, Physics. Especially in the Islamic sciences, the influence of the use of Mantiq is quite large, so that it has produced many qualified scientists and works. This fact, of course, cannot be separated from the persistence of the scholars in giving spirit to the teachings of Islam itself, so that nothing escapes their discussion. Several verses are classified into one type, although trying to be scattered everywhere to be organized into one field of science. The legal verses are grouped into one and then arranged systematically, which then becomes ushul fiqh and fiqh. If traced further, the steps taken in the development of Islamic sciences will be found that Islamic philosophy has a significant role in the beginning of Islamic sciences, especially mantiq. Mantiq or by another name Logic since its appearance in Greece has experienced great development and influence in human life. Logic itself has developed from traditional logic to symbolic logic. This development is in line with changes in human thinking. Logic is influential in shaping a science. The study of the influence of Mantiq on the development of Islamic sciences is a necessity so that it can be an evaluation of the development of Islamic scholarship in the future. Mantiq, which is the form and rules of rational thinking, is identical to the modern way of thinking. Therefore, by looking at the influence of Mantiq on Islamic sciences in the past, we will be able to ask the question whether Mantiq science with the principles of thinking in the past is still relevant to current scientific developments. There are four Mantiq principles used in this study, namely: Syllogism, Deductive, Inductive and Analogy / Qiyas. These four principles are used in analyzing Islamic sciences in general, namely: Tafsir, Ushul Fiqh, and Kalam. The results of the analysis become input for the development of Islamic sciences in general.

Abstract

The book (Serat) Sastra Gending is written by Sultan Agung, and contains two vast topics, i.e. theology and sufism. In terms of theology, Sultan Agung describes that theology is a unity of three elements configurating equilateral triangularity, in which God is located in the peak point, while other two points are in the beneath resided by human beings and universe. Whereas in terms of sufism (tasauf), as represented in the socio-religious condition of Jawa inland-people (Pajang-Islamic Mataram), Sultan Agung uses it as ethical and behavioral teachings. As an adherent of Shaykh Siti Jenar’s mysticism—and all at once his admission as a student of Sunan Kalijaga—Sultan Agung has formed a different tasauf concept. He, seen from Sastra Gending, succeeded to create synthesis in between normative devotion based on sharī‘a and tasauf. In one hand, he teaches the importance of sharī‘a as basis of tasauf (i.e. Sunnite tasauf); on the other, he also endorses the existence of philosophical tasauf with ḥulūl doctrine as one of the concepts.

Abstract

Snouck Hurgronje, the advisor of Government of Netherland in Indonesia observed that Islam could be seen from two aspects: ritual and politic. “Give the full freedom to the Indonesian Muslims to conduct their religious doctrines related to the spiritual aspects, and do not give them the full freedom related the political aspects,” his suggestions at the time to the General Governor of Netherland to Indonesia. His view hence inspired the future leaders of Indonesia, Soekarno and Soeharto, particularly in the New Order under the President Soeharto. In the beginnings of his power he freed from the prisons the Masyumi figures, but did not permit to this Muslim organizations to rebirth; he forced all Islamic political parties to merger under one party, the PPP; he forced all political parties and mass organizations to use Pancasila as sole basic; he build hundreds of mosques every month; he supported the formation of ICMI (Association for Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals); he hesitated to capture and sent the prisons who criticized vocally all his policies, and this sad condition goes to continue till more than 30 years of his power. The time of big mutiny come to real condition following the all university students entire the archipelago came down to the streets and demanded Soeharto to resign, or they forced him to come down, and finally the fall of his power happened in 1998 with the sad ending, and it is the logical consequence of his politicization of Islam.

Abstract

The text of the Qur’ān which is manifested in the form of mushaf has existed just only in the post- codification of ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān. Nevertheless, in fact, not all mufassirs agree that the word al-Qur’ān Karīm (Q.s. 56: 77-79) is a synonym for the word mushaf that is used today; therefore mushaf must be purified and sacralized. Based on the mentioned reason, this paper will study why Muslims give sanctity to the use of the mushaf in their daily lives. The answer for the question is constructed in two questions. First, how sanctification and sacralization of mushaf happen?, and is the expression of the Muslims today is a form of cultural sacralization of mushaf? This writing mostly uses library data which is combined with linguistic, history and cultural approaches.
