STUDIA ISLAMIKA (ISSN 0215-0492; E-ISSN: 2355-6145) is a journal published by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta. It specializes in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular, and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general, and is intended to communicate original researches and current issues on the subject. This journal warmly welcomes contributions from scholars of related disciplines. STUDIA ISLAMIKA, published three times a year since 1994, is a bilingual journal (English and Arabic) that aims to provide readers with a better understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asia’s Muslim history and present developments through the publication of articles, research reports, and book reviews from Indonesian and international scholars alike. STUDIA ISLAMIKA has been accredited by The Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia as an academic journal (SK Dirjen Dikti No. 56/DIKTI/Kep/2012).

Abstract

the discourse concerning feminism in Indonesian Muslim society is relatively recent. The emergence of such a movement only goes back to the early twentieth century, when R.A Kartini, a daughter of Jepara Resident, struggled for an equal position for man and women in public life. it seems that the movement has tried to respon a particular challenge faced by most women in the Dutch-East Indies who have been discriminated againts and denied access to education. as the movement speards, the discourse on gender rises to become an important issue among muslims in Indonesia, particularly in academic sphere. Abstract

These two texts, al-Mawahib and Taj us-Salatin, further had similarities in terms of both language and their substances. In this paper, al-Mawahib will be discussed in its relation to Taj us-Salatin. But before we come to the discussion, the author will pay attention to several texts which preceded al-Mawahib in creating the initial discourse on Islamic politics. As the author will show below, both al-Mawahib and Taj us-Salatin contributed to shaping Islamic political ideas in the land below the wind, that is, what are now referred to as Indonesia and Malaysia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i1.575

Abstract

Needles to say that there are numerous Muslim organizations all over Indonesia, and therefore, some limitation is a necessity. The following qualifications are used to select which of them are to be included: (1) they must be well established and enjoyed a high community support, and (2) act as centers of religious values production and reproduction, especially for the surrounding community. Thus only Muslim organizations with real mass support and strong networks, as well as with real contributions in shaping the Muslims minds and attitudes, will be studied. Using the criteria, besides PERTI, NU and Muhammadiyah mentioned before, thirteen organizations are selected including PERSIS, DDI (Darul Dakwah wa lrryad), Nahdlatul Wathan, and al-Washliyah. Some of these organization are strong only outside Java sucb as PERTI in West Sumatera, al-Washliah in North Sumatera and DDI in South Sulawesi. It is only natural that the research also put great emphasis on Muslims traditions outside Java.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i2.671

This paper is a review of the book M.C. Ricklefs,The Seen and Unseen Worlds in Java: History, Literature and Islam in the Court of Pakubuwana II 1726-1749, (Honolulu: Asian Studies Association of Australian in association with Allen & Unwin and University of Hawaii Press, 1998).As for as the Indonesian studies are concerned,  Java has become the most various points of view, concerning the javanese society and culture. Abstract

Muhammadiyah is an organizational and socio-religious movements in Indonesia related to the reform (tajdid) Islam in general and Islamic law in particular. For Muhammadiyah, tajdid has a double meaning: the reform and modernization. To run tajdid correctly, according to the Muhammadiyah need to use the power of the mind in accordance with ijtihad. Muhammadiyah view that ijtihad can be done on the issues that have not been defined by the Qur'an and Sunnah explicitly and also to the problems that have been defined by these two sources.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v2i1.841

Abstract

This paper introduces Shaykh Dāwud ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Musṭafá Rūmī (also known as Bāba Dāwud or Musṭafá al-Rūmī) who was an Islamic scholar believed to have lived in Aceh sometime between 1650 and 1750 to the larger Muslim world. Shaykh Dāwud ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Musṭafá Rūmī is important for three reasons: (a) he lived during the time of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam (16th – 17th centuries) and he was the leading student and religious caliph of ‘Abd al-Ra’ūf al-Sinkīlī (Teungku Syiah Kuala), the well-known Acehnese religious scholar; (b) his Risālat masā’il al-muhtadī li ikhwān al-muhtadī has been taught at Islamic institutions in Aceh and all around the Malay world; and (c) no scholarly works have yet been written about him, despite the striking fact that he and Teungku Syiah Kuala co-founded the Dayah Manyang Leupue educational institution, to which he subsequently remained affiliated.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i2.4441

Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji dua aspek penting yang dieksplorasi dalam Qur'an, yaitu teologi dan eskatologi. Untuk tujuan penulisan, artikel ini menggunakan beberapa salinan Manuskrip [MSS dalam bentuk jamak dan MS untuk tunggal] dan edisi cetak dari Turjum?n al-Mustafid. Manuskrip-manuskrip tersebut adalah ML 290 dan ML 116 untuk MSS dan terbitan dari Mustafa al-Babi al-?alabi pada tahun 1951 dan Dar al-Fikr pada tahun 1990 [baca: TM90] untuk edisi cetaknya. Abstract

This article has examined the dynamics of the formation of KPPSI, its emergence and the character of its supporters. It can be concluded that the legacy of DI is clearly observable in the former DI followers - who supported the establishment of the movement. Aziz Kahar Muzakkar is the son of Kahar Muzakkar. However, the DI factor cannot wholly explain the emergence of KPPSI. This discussion has shown that there were many other Islamists in KPPSI who had no DI ties. This attests to the continuing influence of Islamic modernism, including the role of Muhammadiyah educational training in the radicalization of Islamism in the region. Furthermore, young Islamists have begun to be shaped by broader Islamist movements due to their access to global Islam. To some extent, KPPSI also attracted young activists with attitudes of intolerance to others.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i1.557
