Abstract

Chinese Indonesians are not homogeneous community. Study of the Chinese is also important to understand not only their presence in Indonesia but also  religious life. This article seeks to shed light on Indonesia’s Chinese Muslims in Pontianak City. It explains the reasons that led the Chinese Indonesians to convert to Islam and the challenges they face. Several important reasons behind their conversion, among others, are intellectuality, morality, social relations, and mysticism. In contrast with conversion to other religions, a Chinese Indonesians  conversion to Islam is such problematic. This is mainly due to the negative stereotype against Muslims. It has also been worsened by the behavior of religious fanaticism of some Muslims under the banner of fundamentalism. Thus, those who are converting to Islam, to some extent, have experienced various challenges such as rejection from family members as well as their original community, and some of them also receive death threats. Besides, they even had to forsake their Chinese identity.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v25i1.6034

Abstract

The history of Islamic educational reform in Indonesia shows that the emergence of the kaum muda group at the beginning of the twentieth century is connected with the emergence of the modern model of Islamic education called “madrasah”.  After independence, the central government established a number of madrasahs for religious education and sekolah for ‘non-religious’ education in a number of areas in Indonesia. Focusing on Islamic education and schools in Aceh, this article argues that although the development of Islamic education in the area initially followed the state-wide pattern of contestation between modernist and traditionalist groups, the context, timing, socio-political factors behind reform and change was varied. This article shows that there is a close intersection between educational change and reform with non-educational factors such as government policies, local socio-political changes, amongst others.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v20i3.513

Ricklefs, Polarising Javanese Society: Islamic and Other Visions (c. 1830-1930) (Singapore: National University of Singapore Press, 2007), xviii + 297.Kedua buku tersebut secara sinambung menjelaskan sejarah Islamisasi Jawa selama enam abad: dari abad 14 sampai abad 20.

Abstract

This book presents a study on democracy and civil society in non-Western countries. Like other discourse on democracy and modernization, civil society emerged in the West with its specific culture and tradition. Therefore the development of discourse on civil society in non-Western countries has raised a question: Is a social system that emerged in a particular culture compatible to a society with different culture and tradition? Among other things, the book edited by Robert W. Hefner is aimed to answer the above mentioned question. The contents of the book consists of two parts. The first part puts forward articles written by political scientists and sociologists on structure and basic frame of civil society, then the second part contains various articles written by anthropologists and sociologists on the development of civil society in various non-Western countries. Experiences of applying civil democracy in non-Western countries, as discussed in the second part of the book, shout that the discourse on democracy and civil society is not a simple matter.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i2.713

Abstract

In the history of Indonesian politics, the institutionalization of the presidential system has experienced ups and downs. The presidential system has had its own style and character under each regime. The main factor behind this relates to the varying nature of the political systems and patterns of leadership. Since the reformasi era and the amendment of the 1945 Constitution, however, the system has experienced a ‘purification’. During the period of president Habibie, the system was not implemented thoroughly, because of the transitional nature of the government. The embryo of a presidential system begun to emerge with the 1999 general election. The purification was marked by two fundamental changes. Firstly, there was the strengthening between the legislative and the executive. Secondly, there was the restriction of the period in which a president could only be elected for two periods. With these amendments, the opportunities open to an incumbent president during the reformasi era have been restricted by the law. The presidential term makes the periods for presidents and vice-presidents more fixed.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i2.1041

Abstract

This article deals with two scholarly tafsīr books circulating throughout modern Indonesia: Husein Qadri’s (1906-1966) “Senjata Mukmin” (The Weapons of the Believers) and Agus Purwanto’s (b. 1964) “Nalar Ayat-Ayat Semesta” (Reasoning of the Verses of the Universe). Qadri, representing his position as Muslim scholar, and Purwanto, as Muslim intellectual, contribute to the shaping of lay exegesis in their country. I conclude that although the two works are completely different with regard to genre, methodology and style, both are concerned with attracting the attention of lay readers and, accordingly, endeavor to present their information in a comprehensible and accessible manner. In term of content, the two books limit their discussion to the apparent (ẓāhir) meaning of the Qur’an, an understanding that depends on a reader’s knowledge of Arabic; one might call it an immediate understanding of the text. Their works also maintain the primacy of Arabic over the Indonesian language.
