STUDIA ISLAMIKA (ISSN 0215-0492; E-ISSN: 2355-6145) is a journal published by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta. It specializes in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular, and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general, and is intended to communicate original researches and current issues on the subject. This journal warmly welcomes contributions from scholars of related disciplines. STUDIA ISLAMIKA, published three times a year since 1994, is a bilingual journal (English and Arabic) that aims to provide readers with a better understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asia’s Muslim history and present developments through the publication of articles, research reports, and book reviews from Indonesian and international scholars alike. STUDIA ISLAMIKA has been accredited by The Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia as an academic journal (SK Dirjen Dikti No. 56/DIKTI/Kep/2012).

Mirjam Kunkler and Alfred Stepan (eds). 2013. Democracy and Islam in Indonesia. New York: Columbia University Press. xv + 252pp.Donald L. Horowitz. 2013. Constitutional Change and Democracy in Indonesia. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. xviii + 326pp.The two reviewed books provide explanations for the success of Indonesia’s democratization. Kunkler and Stepan’s (2013) edited volume, Democracy and Islam in Indonesia, emphasizes the political actors (agency) in explaining democratization in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Horowitz’s (2013) Constitutional Change and Democracy in Indonesia focuses on institutions and the strategies of institutional reform chosen by political actors during democratization. Both works provide careful evaluation on the relatively stable development of Indonesian democracy. Examining the social, political, and institutional foundations that facilitate the consolidation of Indonesia’s democracy, the two works analyze why and how the democratic transition in Indonesia proceeded to a consolidation stage. Different form Kunkler and Stepan’s edited volume, which evaluates the state of Indonesian democracy by refererring to the criteria offered by democratic consolidation framework, Horowitz’s work moves farther revealing why the democratic processes have occurred in the sequence and manner that they did.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v22i3.2411

Abstract

in the past, the main purpose of IAIN was "simply" as a missionary institution, responsible for the dissemination of the Islamic religion throughout the community. However, as it developed, besides remaining as an institute for propagating missionary works, IAIN has also played an increasingly bigger role as an academic institution in the arena of Islamic higher education. Abstract

It is inevitable that the presence of Islam in the archipelago little more spark religious conflict in the region . Local people have been accustomed to living in a Hindu - Buddhist teachings systems for centuries . The influence of these religions not only revolves around the ritual affairs , but has its roots in various aspects of life . The establishment then faltered when Islam comes to offer a different concept of life . Through the history of data it can be seen how the Majapahit kingdom must bow to the Demak kingdom held by Muslims . Of course not all conflicts arise in the form of political infighting . Conflict between Hindu - Buddhist and Islam can also appear in literary expression . In those days , such as the writings appear Gatoloco Fiber or Fiber Darmogandul , which clearly indicates the existence of tensions or religious conflicts . The word " God " for example , in the Java language spoofed " olo " which means ugly . Abstract

This article reviews the complex contestation between religion and state in terms of the Muslims role in the formation of nation state since Indonesia’s independence. The article’s first part discusses the emergence of new middle-class Muslims that played a key role in the Islamization process and contribute to the emergence of Islamist attitudes and behavior. These attitudes tend to be strengthened and lead the potential latent extremism endangering multiculturalism and multireligious life in Indonesia. The article’s second part focuses on the long history of the Muslims role as majority groups in the formation of the constitution’s nomenclature relating to the position of religion in the state system. The new middle-class Muslims also have a desire to achieve their dreams exposing the greater portion of religion in public sphere. It can be seen from the strengthening of those Muslims activists in the parliament to transform the comprehensive meaning of the concept of God.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i2.3715

This paper seeks to discuss Muhammadiyah's attitude towards the Javanese cultural identity in the movement interacted with the ideology, psychology, and cosmology of Javanese culture.The views, insights, and behaviour of the founding father and early prominent figures within the organisation are presented, notably the way in which the former interpreted elements of Javanese culture. Abstract

The importance of religious courts initially rose with the introduction of Marriage Law no. 1, 1974 which mainly aimed to prevent arbitrary divorces, which was viewed to be a common problem among Muslims at the time. The enactment of this law meant that divorces needed to be approved by the religious court, hence acting as a disincentive for men to divorce their wives at the drop of a hat. The impact of this law is evident: the rate of divorce for Indonesian Muslims declined from 16.7% in 1955 to 1.1% in 1990. The survey looked at a range of issues related to the use of the religious courts across the nation and access to these courts. Hence the survey touched on the background of users, equity, satisfaction, accessibility, knowledge of the religious courts and the services provided, and trust in public institutions.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i2.554

Abstract

"The translation of Islam" to quote M.B. Hooker-constitutes one important dimension in the Islamization process: it is the means through which Islamic principles come into the local context. In Indonesia, the translation of Islam can be seen, among other things, in the legal institution, The "solitary judge" (hakim tunggal) as it is know in early Islan is transformed into the "Judicial assembly" (majlis hakim). In the first system, the solitary judge, kadi is the only judge responsible for the implementation of Islamic law, while in the second system, the judicial assembly, legal decisions are made collectively and involvee at least three judges.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v6i2.733

Abstract

Views of Islamic political thought, at least there are three currents of thought among Indonesian Muslim intellectuals; formalistic currents, currents substantivistik, and fundamentalist currents. One view of current formalistic, he said Islam is a universal religion and overall (total). He emphasized the power of God on earth and as the views of Islamic fundamentalism, the danger of "Westoxication" or "jahili modern society". For this group, Islam must be instituted in order to be a force for liberation in this world.
