Abstract

This article is the result of research that discusses the belief of some Lamongan people in the role of primus inter pares which is considered to have the ability to interpret natural phenomena and human destiny, which is practiced in istikharah and weton calculations in the wedding tradition in Lamongan. This habit can be found in modern society, even today there are still many people who still adhere to this tradition, so it is necessary to respect the diversity of religions and cultures. This phenomenon is an illustration of social religious facts in Lamongan whose existence cannot be denied, thus strengthening the assumption that istikharah and weton calculations have been responded to by Muslims in various practices. For example, asking community leaders or people deemed capable to provide solutions among various social problems. The practice of istikharah and weton calculations basically have the same goal, which is to uncover the truth, even though the two come from different foundations.

Abstract

This article examines the views of Sahl al-Tustarī on the Qur’an. As the first Sufi Mufasir who write a Sufi commentary of the Qur’an, al-Tustarī has laid down the principles of Sufistic interpretation of the Qur’an. This research is a library study that its data is based on written sources. The main source of this research is Tafsīr al-Qur’an al-’Aẓīm by Sahl al-Tustarī. The research approach used is a structural approach initiated by Robert Scholes with an interpretive and comparative framework. This paper shows that among al-Tustarī’s views on the Qur’an which are important and the basis for his Sufistic interpretation is that the Qur’an is an Arabic holy book and has four levels of meaning; ẓāhir, bāṭin. ḥadd and maṭla’.

Abstract

This article discusses Tauhid by two prominent mutakallim figures, namely al-Qāḍī ‘Abd al-Jabbār and al-‘Ash’arī using literature review and analytical and comparative methods. These two figures have similarities and differences in the concept of tauhid. ‘Abd al-Jabbār denies the azaliyah qualities that Allah has attached to Himself, because pinning these qualities to Allah will have an impact on divine dualism, and will also plunge a person into tajsim and tasybih, so he sees that Allah's nature is in essence, God himself. This statement was then opposed by al-Ash’arī, arguing that the nature of Allah is not His essence and nothing else, it means that the attributes of Allah are qadim. This is what the Mu’tazilah denied because it causes the number of qadim to be counted. The results of this study conclude that they agree on the oneness of Allah and provide evidence for it, refute things that lead to tasybih and tajsim, and takyif against Allah SWT. In addition, denying the possibility of seeing Allah in the world, and believing that Allah has the nature of kalam even though they differ in defining these attributes. While the difference between these two figures, first is in terms of their manhaj in determining aqidah. Second, in interpreting monotheism, the relationship between essence and nature, the nature of faith, interpretation of mutasyabih verses, the word of God, ru’yatullah in the hereafter.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the involvement of Sufism orders (Tariqa) in the pace of social change in Banten. The main focus to be presented in this research article is how the Tariqa exists and develops in the life of Banten community and how the Tariqa plays a role in the social change. The method used in this study is a field research method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation analysis of literary sources. The article’s research recorded findings that various Sufism organizations or Tariqa had existed and became important actors of social change in Banten’s historical phases since the era of the Banten Sultanate, Western colonialism, until Banten became part of Indonesian territory in the contemporary era. Furthermore, the role of the Tariqa in social change is expressed in three transmissions of its influence in Banten, namely 1) the presence of Sufism teachings as a source of inspiration for the Sultan’s (ruler’s) policies, 2) the establishment of Sufi-sultan teacher connections (ruler/government), and 3) the existence of Sufi scholars and Tariqa organizations as the basis of social and moral movements.

Abstract

This research discusses the negative image of Islam that is perceived by some elements of society and religious figures, who often view parties outside of Islam as threats. This creates a dichotomy between the majority and the minority, which has implications for the emergence of violence and oppression. Using qualitative methods with a manhaj al-muqāran approach, this research examines the interpretations of ‘Abdullāh Yūsuf ‘Alī and Muḥammad Asad, both of whom offer inclusive perspectives on Islam. The research results show that although there are differences in approach, both agree that Islam teaches the values of tolerance, religious freedom, and total surrender to God as the path to salvation. This finding confirms that Islam is not an exclusive religion but rather prioritizes coexistence in peace. This research contributes to healing the psychological burden of Muslims and opens insight into the meaning of Islam, which is relevant in the contemporary era.

Abstract

People who experience phenomena that cannot be explained logically are usually said to have a sixth sense and are able to see through their inner eyes or scientifically known as extrasensory perception. In some cultures, and beliefs, someone who has abilities beyond the senses usually gets a high position in society and is trusted to provide consideration in deciding a problem. The ability to see through the eyes of the heart is mentioned in the Qur’an through the Baṣara verse. The purpose of this research is to find out the meaning of Baṣara in the Qur’an and extrasensory perception. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach which is library research and the data analysis used is descriptive analysis. The results of this study indicate that Baṣara verses and their istiqaq in the Qur’an contain 148 verses. Baṣara is an obligatory attribute of Allah that we must believe in, but it is also a human trait. Extra sensory perception is a person’s ability to perceive a stimulus that is present not from the main senses originating from the soul and is responded to through the soul, while the extra forms of sensory perception are telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and retrocognition. Baṣara’s view is obtained based on a person’s high faith, while extra sensory perception can be owned by everyone, but you need to be vigilant. Someone who gets karomah from Allah is called having the ability baṣirah.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the similarities and differences in Ibn Kathīr and Amina Wadud’s interpretations of inheritance rights between women and men using a muqarran interpretation approach. Ibn Kathīr as an interpreter of mutaqaddimin and Amina Wadud are Muslim feminists who are critical of the issue of women’s rights, especially inheritance rights in Islam. In the Qur’an surah al-Nisā’ [4]: 11-12, Ibn Kathīr interprets that the share of a son is the same as that of two daughters and the remaining third of the inheritance becomes a mandatory will. Meanwhile, Amina believes that women have equal inheritance rights to men. The distribution of inheritance between men and women must comply with the principles of benefit and justice. In addition, without any restrictions on which heirs, the remaining third of the wealth can be inherited without reducing the distribution of the remaining wealth. This rule is quite flexible, and the most important thing is to fulfill the principle of justice.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and find a concept of remembrance of Sufism as a method of spiritual, moral, and social education for postmodern society. The research method used is a literature review which examines various literatures, articles, books, and documentation that support the topic of study. The results of the study show that remembrance of Sufism as an alternative to purify the soul and educate the heart to be cleaner so that it will have an impact on personality and social. The process to get there must go through the stages of takhallī, taḥallī, and tajallī. Then, remembrance of Sufism to be a method of education for spiritual, moral and social aspects must be carried out in the right way, which must be solemn, persistent, repeated, understand the meaning and be presented in the heart. Internalization of Sufism remembrance is important to harmonize spiritual, moral and mu'amalah aspects so that the practice of Sufism does not only strengthen one aspect, but several aspects that make him a moderate, balanced and in accordance with the dictates of Islam itself.

Abstract

In the development of Quran interpretation, the approach of science has been used, which is considered the most contemporary approach to understanding verses related to the universe. Among the paradigm shifts in the interpretation of the Quran caused by the use of a scientific approach, is the emergence of an understanding of verses that were originally associated with a certain time, such as the impending apocalypse, then changed that in fact the verse is not an explanation of the events of the doomsday, such as the change in understanding of verse 4 in sura al-Zalzalah which states that at the time of the earthquake, the earth speaks to man. This article is a results of the research on the tafsir al-Jāmi’ li Ahkām al-Qur’ān by imam al-Qurṭubī and Kitab Al-Qur’an dan Tafsirnya (Edisi yang Disempurnakan) compiled by the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia by qualitative methods. This article concludes that classical and modern exegetes have similarities in interpreting the earth speak. The equation is that when the earth is shaken it releases its burden in the form of rocks and other objects. After examining these objects, they can provide information about human actions that have occurred at certain times. The Geologists can also get information about when the earthquake occurred at a certain time from the records found on rocks and coral reefs.

Abstract

This library research descriptively explains the causes of the ecological crisis in Indonesia by using the ecotheological approach in the construction of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s thought. This research shows that the ecological crisis is correlated with a perspective that is not in favor of nature (anthrophocentrism), modern humans lose their existence-spiritual and understanding of nature that is desacralized. Ecotheology is then used as a strategic basis for solving the ecological crisis in the midst of Indonesian religious society by mainstreaming ecotheology through religious leaders, pesantren, educational institutions, and NGOs.
