Abstract

The main problem that is often faced by athlete is fatigue. It can decrease maximum muscle strength. To overcome this problem, many athletes use ergogenic aids such as watermelon. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of watermelon juice on reduction of muscle fatigue and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after weight training. Muscle fatigue was measured by maximum repetition done by the subjects in the last set and DOMS was measured by post-training muscle soreness intensity. By using a randomized crossover design, 20 subjects were recruited then divided into 2 groups, a treatment group and a control group. The subjects were asked to do a training protocol to induce muscle fatigue and DOMS. As much as 500 ml watermelon juice was consumed in 1 of 2 training sessions and a placebo was consumed in the other. The number of repetitions showed a significant increase on treatment group than control group (p<0,05). Passive muscle soreness intensity and active muscle soreness intensity showed a significant decrease on 24 hours and 48 hours post-training after administration of watermelon juice (p=0,000). We conclude that there was an effect of watermelon juice on muscle fatigue and DOMS after weight training.   Keywords: weight training, muscle fatigue, DOMS, watermelon, citrulline

Abstract

Caffeine is one of alkaloids that have the potential to skin cancer treatment. Caffeine is hydrophilic with log-P value of 0.07 that makes difficult to penetrate to the stratum corneum. Nanoemulsion is one of system which made to increase drug penetration. One of the important component in the nanoemulsion is a surfactant that acts as a unifier between the oil and water phases to form one phase that isotropic and thermodynamically stable. The presence of lipophilic component in the surfactant can affect the skin barrier disturb, thus increasing penetration. The aims of this study was to find the best composition of the PEG-400 and lecithin as surfactant combination to obtain a nanoemulsion that is safe, stable, and increasing penetration of caffeine. The experiment was conducted using a factorial design method which observed responses of flux value and viscosity deviation. The viscosity deviation and flux were analyzed using Design Expert 10.0 trial to determine the optimal formula of caffeine nanoemulsion. The results obtained optimal formula of nanoemulsion that has composition of PEG-400 as 32% and lecithin as 7% . Prediction of viscosity deviation and flux value of optimal formula was 0,034 cP and 0.514 µg cm-2min-1. Keywords: caffeine, nanoemulsion, PEG-400, lecithin

Abstract

The number of cesarean section in Indonesia is 9,8% and approaching cesarean limit suggested by WHO which is 10%. The most common reason for cesarean section is prior cesarean. Cesarean section has higher maternal mortality risk compared to vaginal delivery. Vaginal delivery with prior cesarean has higher complication risk compared to cesarean section. Maternal complications and neonatal outcomes are important to decide delivery methods. Maternal complications that can be compared are postpartum infection, postpartum hemorrhage, and uterine rupture. Neonatal outcomes that can be compared are APGAR score and neonatal birth injury. This study aimed to compare maternal complications and neonatal outcomes between vaginal delivery and cesarean section in women with prior cesarean section. There was a significant difference in the incidence of postpartum infection (p=0.01) and neonatal birth injury (p=0.05). There was no significant difference in APGAR score and the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage. There was no uterine rupture observed. In conclusion, vaginal delivery is a viable option for pregnant woman with prior cesarean.

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of heart attack and stroke. Hyperlipidemia is one of the triggers of atherosclerosis through oxidative stress and formation of foam cells. Atherogenic index (the ratio of LDL/HDL) is a predictive parameter of coronary heart disease. A.flava is potential as antiaterosklerosis due to the content of berberine and flavonoids. This study was undertaken to determine the ability of methanolic extract of A.flava leaves (EMDAf) in lowering atherogenic index and the number of foam cells. Five groups experimental animals (each consisting of 4 rats) was induced with high fat and fructose diet for 45 days, followed by administration of EMDAf dose of 250 mg/kg BW, 500 mg/kg BW, 750 mg/kg BW, simvastatin 1.8 mg/kg BW (control (+)), and CMC Na 1% (control (-)) for 7 days treatments. Then the rat arcus aorta was taken for histopathological examination with Masson Trichrome staining. ANOVA test results showed that EMDAf could decrease the atherogenic index, but not significantly (p> 0.05). While the Kruskall Wallis test results showed that the increase dose of EMDAf might improve histopathology of the aorta through a reduction in the number of foam cells significantly compared to the negative control (p <0.05). Berberine contents in EMDAf is 0.046% measured by TLC-densitometry. It could be concluded that methanolic extract of A.flava leaves had the ability to decrease in the atherogenic index value and the number of foam cells.   Keywords: Arcangelisia flava leaves, foam cells, atherogenic index, aorta, histopathology

Abstract

Background. Salivary pH between 5.6 to 7.0 in a normal state. pH below 5.5 included in environments susceptible to caries. Concentration of H+ ions which will outline the high Ca-P bond and will liberate ions into the surrounding environment. So that the material of fissure sealant will lose inorganic mineral constituent and formed on the surface porosity materials. If the sealant surface rough for their porosity can be a retention of plaque and calculus that may cause caries. Other than that, more porosity will affect the compression strength of the material used for fillings when chewing. Purpose. This research purposed to determine the depth of surface porosity difference between pit and fissure sealant materials based resin with glass ionomer after artificial saliva soaked with a pH of 5.5. Method. This research was a laboratory experimental research design with the post test only control group design. The total number of samples required were 16 samples. The tool used a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with units of measurements µ m. Results. The average depth of the material surface porosity pit and fissure sealant resin-based composite of 2.805 μm, while the glass ionomer amounted to 1.912 μm. The surface material pit and fissure sealant resin composite-based artificial saliva soaked with a pH of 5.5 for 24 hours had a depth porosity greater than the surface material pit and fissure sealant glass ionomer-based. Keywords: Depth porosity, glass ionomer, pH 5,5, pit and fissure sealant, resin composite.
