Abstract

AbstractThis study was a classroom based action research which aimed to find out whether Word Mixing technique can improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This study was conducted in two cycles consisting of three sessions in each cycle. There were two kinds of data (qualitative and quantitative data) which were collected through tests and writer’s diary.The result of the tests showed that the students’ vocabulary mastery was improved in each cycle. The students’ mean score was 65.30 in pre test, 71.79 in post test 1, and improved became 81.13 in post test 2. It can be also seen on the number of students passing the test. There were 4 students passed in the pre test, 18 students in the post test 1, and 36 students in the post test 2. The result of writer’s diary also showed that the students gave positive response toward the implementation of Word Mixing Technique. Based on the results of the tests and the writer’s diary, it can be concluded that vocabulary mastery of VIIC students successfully improved by the implementation of Word Mixing technique. Keywords: Word Mixing Technique, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

Verbal and non-verbal communication is important for hotel staff to communicate with the guest, thus ensuring their satisfaction. This study aimed at (1) finding out the forms of verbal and non-verbal communication used by front office staff, (2) describing the function of verbal and non-verbal communication used by front office staff, and (3) analyzing the difficulties faced by front office staff in using verbal and non-verbal communication. The subject of this study were the front office staff in Double-Six Luxury Hotel Seminyak. The main instrument used in gathering the required data was the researcher and the data were obtained through observation, audio recording, and interview. Four steps were done in analyzing the data, namely: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of the study showed that, the verbal language mostly used by front office staff in Double-Six Luxury Hotel Seminyak in handling guest related to the guest needs and SOP provided by the hotel. There were also non-verbal language used in the form of showing interest and happiness. The reason that verbal language is used according to the study is to make the communication run well and avoid misunderstanding among staff and guests. The language barrier led the staff to use non-verbal language but they were aware that using non-verbal language could lead to some politeness issue. Key words: communication, front office staff, guest, non-verbal, verbal

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of Social Interactive Writing Method on the students’ writing competency. Randomized Posttest-Only Control Group Design was applied in this study which consists of 56 students. The instruments were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The result of the analysis shows that the students who were taught by using Social Interactive Writing Method better than the students who were taught by using Conventional Method. It had been proven from the mean score was 87.64 while the control group was 67.92. Furthermore, from the analysis by using inferential statistic, it was found that the value of t observed (tob) was 12.012. It was higher than t critical value (tcv) which was 1.64 (ɑ = .05). After comparing t observed and t critical value, it was clear that t observed (tob) exceeded t critical value (tcv). In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it could be confirmed that the application of Social Interactive Writing Method gave significant effect toward students’ writing competency. Keywords: Social Interactive Writing Method, Writing competency

Abstract

This experimental study aimed at finding out the significant effect of Scripted Songs technique and conventional teaching technique towards English competences of fourth grade students of SD Negeri No 6 Dalung, Kuta Utara Sub-District, Badung in academic year 2013/2014. The design of this study was post-test only control group design. The implementation of cluster random sampling technique showed that class 4.A as the control group which was taught by using conventional teaching technique and class 4.C as the experimental group which was taught by using Scripted Songs technique. Both groups consisted of 40 students each. The results of data analysis showed that the students who were taught by implementing Scripted Songs technique performed better than those who were taught by implementing conventional teaching technique. The mean score of experimental group was 79.1 and the control group was 75.5. The results of t-test analysis showed that the tobs was 3.755. It was higher than the value of the tcv at 1.99085 (α = 0.05). Moreover, the result of questionnaire indicated that the implementation of Scripted Songs technique motivated the students in comprehending English competences. In conclusion, Scripted Songs technique contributed in giving highly significant effect to students’ English competences. Keywords: Scripted songs, English competences

Abstract

Abstract This for achievements in each indicator of writing competency of the eighth grade students in SMP N 3 Singaraja after applying the personal photograph technique in academic year 2014/2015. To know the achievements in each indicator of writing competencies of the eighth grade students in SMP N 3 Singaraja after applying the personal photograph technique in academic year 2014/2015. There are 30 students in 15 male and 15 female students in especially VIIIE in SMP N 3 Singaraja. The studies have had two cycles where each cycle consists of planning, action, observation and reflection. There are two types of data to analyze the data that was both qualitative and quantitative data. In preliminary observation based on general text: 22 (73.3%), in text type’s descriptive text 26 (86.7%), recount text 24(80%) had problem. For this in indicator descriptive text such as: authenticity 22(73%), title suitability 12(40%), text structure 19 (63%), diction 13(43%), grammar 22(73%), neatness 18(60%), writing competency 21(70%).Recount text such as: authenticity: 17(57%),title suitability 18(60%),text structure 18(60%),diction 14(47%), grammar 18(60%), neatness 18(60%), writing competency 20(67%). In cycle I based on general text: 12 (40%), in text type such as: descriptive text 18(60%), recount text 13(43%) and in each indictor for descriptive text such as: authenticity 1(3%), title suitability 3(10%), text structure 2(7%), diction 6 (20%), grammar 5(17%), neatness 1(3%), writing competency 5(17%). Recount test such as: 9(3%), 9(3%), 10(3.3%), 9(3%), 10(3.3%), 4 (13%). For the cycle II based on general text: 9(30%), in text type such as: descriptive text 9(30%) and recount text 3(10%). In each indicator of writing skill such as: authenticity 2(7%), title suitability 3(10%), text structure 1(3%), diction 4(13%), grammar 2(7%), neatness 3(10%), writing competency 1(3%). Recount text such as: 2(7%), 3(10%), 1(3%), 3(10%), 1(3%), 4(13%), 5(17%).Learning from an impressive improvement of the technique in writing at SMPN 3 Singaraja, teachers are suggested to make use of contextual and real life media.Key words: Personal Photograph Technique, writing competency

Abstract

AbstractThe study aimed at contrasting the phonological systems of Pelaga Dialect (PD) and Tambakan Dialect (TD) and its implication to learning English as a foreign language. The subjects of this study were Pelaga and Tambakan dialects. This study was a contrastive research. The phonological systems of both dialects were firstly described. The obtained data in the form of wordlists (Swadesh, Budasi, and Holle) were collected through recording and listening and noting techniques. The result of the study shows that PD and TD have differences. In terms of phonemes, it was found that PD had 55 phonemes and TD had 48 phonemes. In term of vowel, the distribution of the vowels is different, although they have the same number of it. PD has 9 diphthongs and TD also has 9 diphthongs. From the 19 consonants of both dialects, most of the consonant have complete distribution. There is only the distribution of consonant /ʔ/ that differentiates both dialects in which in PD consonant /ʔ/ appears in the middle and final position, while in TD it appears in the final position only. In term of consonant cluster, PD has 17 consonant clusters and TD only has 11 consonant clusters. On the implication to learning English as a foreign language, English phonemes /ӕ/, /ɒ/, /ɜ/, /ɑ/, /ɑI/, /ɑʊ/, /f/, /v/, /ɵ/, /ð/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʤ/ and all of the English triphthong are difficult to be pronounced by people in Pelaga and Tambakan. Keywords : qualitative evidences, Pelaga dialect,  Tambakan dialect, contrastive study

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to describe (1) the teachers’ techniques, media and material in teaching English vocabulary to young learners at Aura Sukma Insani Kindergarten and (2) the problems faced by the teachers in applying the techniques, media and material in teaching vocabulary. This research was a case study under the form of qualitative design. The subjects of the study were the English teachers in Aura Sukma Insani Kindergarten. The instruments used in collecting the data were the researcher herself, interview guide, video recorder, observation checklist and field note. The data analysis was conducted through four stages namely data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of analysis showed that the teachers applied various teaching strategies with the support of various teaching media to teach vocabulary. The variation enabled the students to have much exposure to the vocabularies. Moreover, the problems faced by the teachers in teaching vocabulary were about the students’ behavioral management, attention management and dependence toward their teachers.Key words: technique, media, material, vocabulary, young learners

Abstract

Abstract             This study aimed at describing the communication strategies used by bilingual children of interracial marriage family in doing interaction with their family at Singapadu village, Sukawati distric, Gianyar regency, Bali province. The subjects of this study were two bilingual children of interracial marriage family. The investigation focused on the types of communication strategies that they used in doing interaction with their family, the most frequently communication strategy that they applied when they were doing the interaction, and their reasons in using the communication strategies. This research was a case study which combined qualitative and quantitative analysis in which a triangulation technique was used. The results of the data analysis show that the bilingual children used seven communication strategies which included: topic avoidance, approximation, circumlocution, clarification request, paralanguage, using pictures or objects to help conveying message, and speaking slowly. The most frequently used communication strategy used by the bilingual children was paralanguage. There were three main reasons that they stated in using the strategies, the first to make the family understand of what they expected, the second because the strategies were easy and natural, and the last reason because the strategies were quick to be used. Keywords: Communication strategies, children of interracial marriage family

Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed at describing the prefixes and suffixes in Penglipuran Dialect which belong to derivation and inflection. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected using three techniques, namely observation, recording technique, and interview (listening and noting) technique. Three informants sample from Penglipuran were chosen based on criteria. The criteria of the informants are: they are smart, they have communicative competence, they have enough knowledge about the topic, they are the native speakers of the Penglipuran village, they are patient, they have high-attention, they have enough time to be interviewed, they are not having disturbances related to speech organs, they are a good listener, they are able to answer the questions, they are confident and they are proud of their language and culture.  The results of the study showed that there were six kinds of prefixes in Penglipuran Dialect such as prefix {mə-}, {m-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, and {ə-} and there were three kinds of suffixes in Penglipuran Dialect such as {-Λŋ}, {-In} and, {-ɔ}. Prefixes and suffixes in Penglipuran Dialect which belong to derivation were prefix {mə-} and {m-} and suffix {-Λŋ} and {-Ιn}. Prefixes and suffixes in Penglipuran Dialek which belong to inflection were prefix {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, {m-}, and {ə-} and suffix {-ɔ}, {-Λŋ}, and {-In}. Key Words: affixation, Penglipuran Dialect, derivational and inflectional processes

Abstract

The study attempted to analyze the implementation of character education in the English lessons at SMP Negeri 1 Banjar. The subjects of the research were the eighth grade students and the English teacher. The researcher analyzed the lesson plans and the implementation to investigate how character education was inserted in the teaching of the four basic skills in English which has been integrated in the process of teaching and learning in 2013 curriculum. The instruments in this study consisted of interview guide, recorder, lesson plan analysis checklist, and observation checklist. Result of the analysis indicates that the teacher inserts the character values in indicators, learning materials, learning steps, and assessment instrument in lesson plans. In teaching and learning activities, character values are also implemented. However, the character values which are inserted in learning activities are different from one with another. It depends on the topic and indicators that will be achieved. In the evaluation, the strategies which were used by the teacher were in the form of advice and scoring rubric to assess character education in the process of teaching and learning.  Keywords: Character education, English lessons
