Abstract

This study aimed: 1) to identify the patterns of commissive acts, 2) to identify the speech styles used in terms of formal and informal in expressing commisisve acts, 3) to identify types of error based on grammar and diction and, 4) to analyze the sources of error as committed by the eleventh grade students in a language program class at SMA Negeri 1 Kubutambahan. This study was a qualitative research. The subjects of this study were the eleventh grade students in a language program of SMA Negeri 1 Kubutambahan. The instruments were data elicitation, field note, interview guide, and recorder. The methods of data analysis were data transcription, analysis and category. The results of this study showed that the students produced various categories of speech act namely to promise, to refuse, to swear, to threaten, to offer, to accept, to thank, to request, to give opinion, to congratulate. The commissive acts produced by the students were to promise with total percentage 73%, to refuse with total percentage 14%, to swear with total percentage 12% and to threaten with total percentage 1,4%. The speech styles used in terms of formality by the students were 62,3% of formal language and 38,3% of informal language. The errors committed by the students were 80.8% of the grammatical errors and 19,1% of the diction errors. There were two types of sources of errors committed by the students namely interlingual with the total percentage 19,7% and intralingual or developmental factors with the total percentage 80,2%.

Abstract

This study was a classroom based action research which aimed: (1) to find out whether Numbered Heads Together technique can improve students’ vocabulary mastery, (2)to find out the response of the students toward the implementation of the strategies. This study was conducted in two cycles consisting of three sessions in each cycle. There were two kinds of data (qualitative and quantitative data) which were collected through tests, questionnaire, and writer’s diary.The result of the tests showed that the students’ vocabulary mastery was improved in each cycle. The students’ mean score was 4.63% in pretest, 6.2 in posttest 1, and improved became 7.97 in posttest 2. It can be also seen on the number of students passing the test. There were no students passed in the pretest, 2 students in the posttest 1, and 18 students in the posttest 2. The result of writer’s diary and questionnaire also showed that the students gave positive response toward the strategies. The results of the questionnaires showed that 18 (90%) of the students admitted that they really like the implementation of Numbered Heads Together technique. Moreover, 17 (85%) of the students admitted that they were motivated in learning English using Numbered Heads Together technique.  Key Words: Numbered Heads Together Technique, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

This study was conducted to improve students writing skill using Clustering Technique at seventh grades students of SMPN 6 Singaraja. The Preliminary observation indicated that student class VII B4 of SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja had low writing competency. The subjects of this study were consisted of 36 students. To find out the result of students writing ability in writing competency using clustering technique, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. This study consisted of two cycles, each cycle consisted of four steps, and they were: planning, action, observation and reflection. To collect and analyze the data, the writer used the information from observation, and the students’ achievement in preliminary and evaluation to support data collected. This study showed that using clustering technique in teaching writing can improve students writing competency.The data were collected through writing evaluation. In clustering technique, the writer can use line, boxes, arrows, and circles to show relationships among the ideas. The students’ responses showed that they were interested in writing because they felt easier to write using clustering technique. The percentage of students who had passed the passing score of writing in pre-observation were 2 students (6%), in cycle I were 14 students (39%), meanwhile in cycle II were improved into 31 students (86%). It could be concluded that the implementation of Clustering technique could improve the students’ writing ability of students class VII B4 at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja. And The writer suggested to the other English teacher to use Clustering Technique in teaching writing, because this technique helps the students organize their ideas before they start to write. Key words: Writing competency, Clustering Technique

Abstract

This study was classroom based action research which aimed to find out whether the use of Picture Dictation technique can improve students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph, especially in developing the ideas, organizing the ideas, grammar, using appropriate mechanics, vocabulary and content. There were two kinds of data which were collected through tests, questionnaires, and writer’s diary. The result of the tests showed that the students’ writing achievement was improved in each cycle. The students’ mean score was 54 in pre test, 65.4 in post test 1, and improved became 80.4 in post test 2. It can be seen on the number of students passing the test. There were 1 student passed in the pre test, 16 students in the post test 1, and 28 students in the post test 2. The result of questionnaire and writers’ diary showed that the students gave positive response toward the implementation of Picture Dictation technique. The results of the questionnaires showed that 6 (18,2 %) of the students admitted that they really like and 20 (60,6%) of the students like the implementation of Picture Dictation technique. Moreover, some of the students admitted that they were motivated in learning English using Picture Dictation technique. Keywords: Picture Dictation Technique, Writing Achievement, Descriptive Text

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the types of communication strategies used by the teacher as a teachique of teaching to help the students learn to communicate in english, the teacher’s reasons  in applying certain types of communication strategies and the students’ perception toward communication strategies used by the teacher. The data was collected through direct observation, interview, and questionnaire. Besides, mobile recorder, observation sheet and interview guide also used in gaining the data. This study was qualitative research, this type of research was descriptive in which the data taken were automatically analyze descriptively. The result of this study were: there were eigh types of communication strategies applied by the teacher to help students learn to communicate in English, they are literal translation, repetition, language switching, appeal for assistance, topic avoidance, paralanguage, comprehension check and clarification request. (2) There were five main reasons that caused the teacher applied those communication strategies such as to help students to understand the meaning of English utterances, to help students memorized the word in English, to help the students in mastering a topic, to improve students’ motivation in speaking and to help students comprehend the lesson. (3) It can be concluded that communication strategies applied by the teacher in the teaching and learning process can increase the students’ ability in speaking, because the teacher used appropriate communication strategies to help students in learning English.   Key Word:  Communication Strategies, technique of teaching, speaking ability

Abstract

Indonesia is known for having low literacy skills. Students' literacy skills are low because schools do not provide enough media to help students' literacy skills, especially dictionaries. This study aims to develop a multilingual thematic illustrated dictionary to assist sixth-grade elementary school students' literacy. This has an impact on student learning outcomes are low. In developing the dictionary, this study applies the Design and Development (D&D) using four instruments to collect data: observation sheets, interview guides, questionnaires, and expert assessments. The subjects of this study were teachers and students from elementary schools in urban and rural areas in Buleleng Regency, North Bali. The results show that this dictionary is relevant to the eleven criteria of a good multilingual thematic illustrated dictionary. This dictionary is also categorized as an excellent medium of 10 themes with words and sentences in three languages and authentic pictures. Thus, multilingual thematic illustrated dictionaries are a helpful medium for students and teachers to develop literacy skills. This research implies that students in learning can use the developed dictionary.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the social function, text structure, and language features of suggestion acts that expressed by the eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Banjar. This research was a descriptive qualitative research and used elicitation technique. The students were given four situations of suggestion acts, such as suggestion of appearance, suggestion of health, suggestion of leisure time, and suggestion of attitude. The results of analysis showed that there were 256 suggestion acts expressed by the eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Banjar. Most suggestion acts included recommendation of suggestion acts. There were 192 suggestions included this social function in which the percentage was 75%. Besides, most suggestion acts used text structure of (Subject + Modal Verb + Verb 1). There were 64 suggestion acts used this text structure in which the percentage was 25%. On the other hand, there were 186 suggestion acts used simple present tense in which the percentage was 72%, 109 suggestion acts used specific formula of interrogative form in which the percentage was 42%. Talking about using punctuation of suggestion acts, the most punctuation of suggestion acts that was used by the students was exclamation mark (!), there were 147 suggestion acts used this punctuation in which the percentage was 58%.Keywords: suggestion acts, social function, text structures, language features

Abstract

Language development affects human speech. Speech is the way of communication. The purpose of communication involves how the information can be transferred to each other. People accommodate their communication in daily life to achieve the goal of communication. Another possible purpose which is expected by communicator is showing an identity. It can be done by using strategy based on Communication Accommodation Theory. Communication accommodation strategy is divided by two, divergence and convergence strategy. Phenomena of the use of convergence and divergence exist on students of English Language Education of Ganesha Univerisity of Education. English Language Education students are prepared as a teacher who needs prior knowledge about communication strategy that is expected for communication skill development. The population of the study is students of English Language Education of Ganesha University of Education who are from each regencies in Bali. This study used qualitative method with descriptive design which is expected can describe the use of Convergence and Divergence strategy within the reason of using each strategy. The variables being analyzed are speech rate, pauses, utterance length and lexical accommodation. The data is collected through observation and interview session. The result of study shows that students are possible to use multiple strategy in each variable based on current circumstance. The circumstance involves the place, interlocutor, intimacy, and speech community. All students uses convergence strategy in all variable and three of them use divergence strategy lexically. The reason of using each communication accommodation strategy is taken from communication accommodation theory.Keywords: Communication Strategy, Communication Accommodation Theory

Abstract

The general objective pursued is to describe and to relate the students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Junior High School in Singaraja. The design applied is a quantitative research. There were 96 students recruited using cluster quota sampling. The data were gathered using a reading anxiety scale, a reading self-efficacy scale, and an objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases: descriptively and inferentially. The descriptions consisted of central tendency measures and dispersion. Whereas inferentially, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading anxiety on higher-order-items is at high level while reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are at the low levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely between the students’ reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy, students reading anxiety and reading competency on higher-order-items are negatively and significantly, while the students’ reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are positively and significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant.Keywords: Correlation, Reading Anxiety, Competency, Self-efficacy

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating whether or not the use of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy has an effect on the writing skill of tenth grade students’ at SMKN 1 Sukasada in writing narrative text. This experimental study was carried out using Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. There were two classes chosen as sample, experimental and control group. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The results of data analysis showed that mean score of experimental group (74.82) was higher than control group (71.22). Moreover, result of independent t-test revealed that there was a significant difference on students’ writing skill (Sig.(2-tailed) = 0.008, p < 0.05). These results indicated that Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy gave significant effect on writing skill of tenth grade students at SMKN 1 Sukasada. As conclusion, alternative hypothesis is accepted in which the students from experimental group achieve better than those students from control group.Keywords: Narrative Text, Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy, Writing Skill
