Abstract

Background: Aging is a natural process accompanied by a decline in physical, mental, and social functions. One common health issue in older adults is sleep disturbances, which significantly affect their quality of life. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physical exercise, are effective in addressing sleep issues without adverse side effects. Objective: This literature review aimed to explore the impact of physical exercise, specifically gymnastics, on sleep quality in older adults. Methods: A literature review was conducted using the PICOT framework. Articles were sourced from Google Scholar, Portal Garuda, and ResearchGate, using keywords related to elderly, gymnastics, and sleep quality in both English and Indonesian. Inclusion criteria included articles published between 2015 and 2020, full-text availability, and relevance to the topic. Seven articles meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Results: Various types of physical exercise, including yoga, ergonomic gymnastics, Tai Chi, and low-impact aerobic exercise, were found to significantly improve sleep quality in older adults. These exercises enhance relaxation, improve blood circulation, and reduce stress, resulting in better sleep patterns. For example, yoga was associated with reduced muscle tension and improved oxygen flow to the brain, while ergonomic gymnastics and Tai Chi promoted relaxation and stable blood pressure. Aerobic exercises were found to alleviate stress and increase positive emotions, contributing to improved sleep quality. Conclusion: Physical exercise plays a vital role in enhancing sleep quality among older adults. Structured and regular activities such as yoga, Tai Chi, ergonomic gymnastics, and aerobic exercise are effective non-pharmacological interventions to address sleep disturbances. Promoting these activities can improve the overall well-being and quality of life of older adults.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a chronic condition that poses significant health risks if not properly managed. Adherence to antihypertensive medication is essential for controlling blood pressure and preventing complications. Health locus of control, which reflects an individual"™s beliefs about the control of their health outcomes, is considered a critical factor influencing adherence. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between health locus of control and adherence to antihypertensive medication among patients with hypertension. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on 126 hypertensive patients at a primary healthcare center in Pontianak. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through validated questionnaires: the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) for measuring health locus of control and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) for assessing medication adherence. The relationship between health locus of control and adherence was analyzed using Spearman"™s rho correlation. Results: Most participants exhibited a moderate level of adherence to antihypertensive medication. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between health locus of control and medication adherence. Patients with a stronger internal health locus of control showed better adherence to their medication regimens, emphasizing the influence of personal beliefs on health behaviors. Conclusion: Strengthening health locus of control, particularly internal control, may improve adherence to antihypertensive medication. Healthcare providers should incorporate strategies to enhance patients' sense of control over their health to optimize hypertension management and outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Sleep quality is essential for maintaining physical and mental health. Nurses often face challenges in achieving good sleep quality due to demanding work schedules, high physical activity levels, and irregular shifts, which can lead to poor sleep and reduced overall well-being.Objective: To examine the relationship between physical activity levels and sleep quality among nurses at Bhayangkara Pontianak Hospital. Methods: This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design. A total of 73 nurses were included using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to measure physical activity levels. The data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation. Results: The findings showed a weak negative correlation between physical activity and sleep quality, indicating that higher physical activity levels were associated with poorer sleep quality. Nurses with high physical activity levels and night shift schedules were more likely to experience sleep disturbances. External factors such as environmental conditions and work-related stress also contributed to sleep quality issues. Conclusion: Physical activity has a significant impact on sleep quality among nurses. High physical activity levels, coupled with demanding workloads and irregular shifts, can impair sleep quality. It is recommended that institutions implement strategies to balance physical activity and rest, improve work schedules, and provide support systems to enhance nurses"™ well-being.
