Abstract

The diversity of ethnic groups in Indonesia contributes to the phenomenon of language use. In the context of tourism, the use of language must attract tourists to visit a tourism place or tourism agenda. The use of language in Indonesia tourism also needs to consider to multilingual communities as target tourists. Communication between tourism service providers and tourists can use various media. The use of electronic and print media allows tourism practitioners to communicate effectively. The Solo Calendar of Events 2021 booklet published by the Surakarta government is an effort to be able to communicate with a wider community. This study aims to explain the use of variety language in tourism texts. This study focuses on explaining the phenomenon of the variety of language use in tourism texts. This study used a sociolinguistic approach and descriptive qualitative methods to describe the language used in tourism texts. The results of the study show that the variety of languages used in the tourism text of the Solo Calendar of Events 2021 is Indonesian, Javanese, and English languages. The presence of multilingual tourists results in the use of code mixing in the text. Factors that contribute to code mixing include branding, language attitude, and language power. Abstract

Abstract This study analyzes the aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances, focusing on the Wahyu Katentreman play performed by puppeteer Cahyo Kuntadi. The study aims to identify the causes, processes, and implications of aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit performances and their impact on the sustainability of this traditional art form in the modern era. Using Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction theory as the primary approach, this research also references Jakob Sumardjo’s paradoxical aesthetic theory and Sunardi’s concepts of nuksma and mungguh. A qualitative research method with an interpretative analysis technique was employed, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. The findings indicate that aesthetic deconstruction in this wayang kulit performance is driven by changing audience preferences influenced by materialism and hedonism. The deconstruction process is evident in the transition from sacred to profane elements, the fusion of various performance styles from Surakarta, Yogyakarta, and East Java, as well as the integration of spontaneous humor within the Punakawan characters. The implications of this deconstruction include the emergence of new references for young puppeteers, increased appreciation of wayang kulit among the millennial generation, and economic benefits for karawitan music groups and local communities. Thus, this study asserts that aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit not only contributes to innovation in performing arts but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the relevance of traditional culture amidst dynamic social changes.

Abstract

This study examines manifestations of gender inequality and power relations in the film Borderless Fog (2024), nominated for Best Picture at the Indonesian Film Festival. Employing Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research analyzes dialogues involving the female protagonist, Sanja Arunika, to reveal how linguistic choices reflect gender-based power relations. Using a qualitative, interpretive approach, it analyzes the film's English-subtitled script to investigate how the female detective protagonist, Sanja, is constructed in relation to dominant patriarchal discourses and gendered power relations. Selected script segments are contextualized and interpreted to uncover the implication stance on gender representation in societal norms. The findings demonstrate that male characters consistently position Sanja as an object through utterances emphasizing her physical appearance, fragility, or external affiliations, thereby diminishing her role and undermining her professional authority. While the film challenges stereotypes by portraying Sanja as competent and resilient, it simultaneously critiques the systemic patriarchal structures embedded in male-dominated professions. The discussion connects these findings to broader feminist discourse, highlighting how media representations can either perpetuate or contest gender inequality. This study contributes to the understanding of gender dynamics in Indonesian cinema, which simultaneously reproduces and subverts gender norms within institutional and cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to map the development of Japanese linguistics research in Indonesia through bibliometric analysis, focusing on trends, key themes, and major contributors in the field. Data were retrieved using the Publish or Perish software with Google Scholar as the primary source, covering the period from 2000 to 2024. Analytical tools such as VOS viewer and Tableau were utilized to examine annual publication trends, keyword co-occurrences, and author collaboration networks. The findings reveal a significant growth in publications post-2010, dominated by applied linguistics themes such as language teaching, public language use, and sociolinguistics, while theoretical studies, including sentence structure and semantic analysis, provide critical foundational insights. Key contributors were identified based on their productivity and citation metrics, highlighting patterns of inter-institutional collaboration. This study provides a comprehensive overview of Japanese linguistics research in Indonesia, bridging theoretical and practical perspectives. Abstract

This study explores the use of attitude appraisal in revealing the mothers’ emotions and feelings regarding their attitude toward the situation in which their children are held hostage by Hamas. The study employs a qualitative method to describe the language phenomenon expressed by the journalist in describing the mothers’ attitudes. The data were obtained from the Guardian online newspaper published in 2023, and the samples were selected purposively. Content analysis was used to examine the data, employing Martin and White’s (2005) appraisal framework to classify the data.  This study focuses on one type of appraisal, namely attitude, which covers affect, judgment, and appreciation. The findings of this study reveal that the journalist tends to defend Israel and oppose Hamas. It is seen through positive attitudes, which are dominantly produced by the journalist in expressing his arguments. Besides that, the journalist gives his positive evaluation of the situation that occurred in Gaza and Israel explicitly and implicitly. He exploits negative affect to show his concern and unhappiness to see the three children of Israel who were held hostage by Hamas. In addition, the genre of the editorial is media discussion since it discusses issues of Israeli children's kidnapping.

Abstract

  This study investigates the representation of nationalism in the translation of literary titles published in Djawa Baroe, an Indonesian-language magazine circulated during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. It focuses on the translation strategies and ideological meanings conveyed through lexical choices and symbolic narratives. The analysis identifies twenty-six translated titles, examining three representative examples in detail to illustrate how linguistic adaptation intersects with nationalist discourse. Employing Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model, the study distinguishes between direct and oblique strategies to explain how titles were modified to fit Indonesian conventions while resonating with nationalist sentiments. Additionally, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) situates these strategies within broader ideological and socio-political contexts, allowing the research to capture micro-level textual operations and reveal how translation acted as discourse production embedded within wartime power structures. Findings demonstrate that translators utilized deliberate techniques such as modulation, equivalence, and orthographic adjustment to enhance readability and embed ideological content, foregrounding themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and devotion to the motherland. This highlights that translation in Djawa Baroe was far from a neutral linguistic transfer; instead, it emerged as a politically charged act of cultural mediation. By illustrating how Japanese occupation propaganda intersected with Indonesian nationalist discourse through translation, this study contributes to translation studies by underscoring the ideological role of translation as an instrument of power, identity, and cultural hegemony.

Abstract

Poetry translation presents a unique challenge, as it requires maintaining a delicate balance between semantic fidelity and the preservation of the aesthetic qualities of the target text. This study aims to evaluate the quality of poetry translations produced by university students both with and without the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI), using four assessment criteria based on Nababan's (2012) framework: accuracy, acceptability, readability, and poeticness. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with an evaluation instrument using a three-point scale, where a score of 3 indicates high quality, 2 denotes moderate quality, and 1 reflects low quality. Data were obtained from poetry translations evaluated by experienced raters using a standardized rubric, with results analyzed in terms of frequency distribution and percentages. Findings reveal that in AI-assisted translations, the highest score attainment was observed in readability (52.76%), followed by acceptability (51.14%), accuracy (50.39%), and poeticness (24.34%) as the lowest. In contrast, in translations without AI, the highest score attainment was also found in readability (34.76%), followed by accuracy (33.06%), acceptability (32.43%), and poeticness (12.33%). This comparison indicates that AI use consistently enhances accuracy, acceptability, and readability scores, yet shows limited capacity to improve poeticness significantly. This aspect requires creativity, stylistic sensitivity, and nuanced linguistic judgment beyond the current capabilities of AI systems.
