Abstract

The study examines the use of smartphone applications as a tool in teaching Indonesian to university students in South Korea. This case study specifically examines the implementation of the Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) approach in teaching Indonesian imperatives. This type of sentence does not contain complex affixes, and it is commonly used in everyday speech. The study involves 15 Korean learners, 11 females and four males, enrolled in the Elementary Indonesian class. They were freshmen, and none of them had ever resided in Indonesia. Data are collected through documentation from screen-recorded tutorial videos on using smartphone applications. There were 97 imperative sentences from 15 videos, which have an average duration of 1 minute and 12 seconds. The findings reveal that as many as 83.6% of the total number of imperatives in the videos are grammatically correct in terms of phonological, morphological, syntactical, and semantic aspects. The result on the pronunciation shows a simplification process in the pronunciation of Indonesian consonant clusters, sound changes, and neutralization. On the morphological level, there were some cases in which wrong forms of the verbs were used. The syntactical analysis indicates wrong phrase and sentence structure, in particular the second type of Indonesian passive sentence. The semantic level indicates that the incorrect word choice leads to the wrong meaning of the message.

Abstract

This study examines inter-dialectal homonyms in the Sasak language, particularly between the Meno-Mene and Ngeto-Ngete dialects, and their potential to trigger communication misunderstandings among speakers. Previous studies on Sasak dialects have predominantly focused on phonological and lexical variations, while semantic differences involving homonymous lexicons across dialects remain underexplored. Therefore, this research aims to identify and analyze homonymous vocabularies shared by the two dialects and explain their implications for inter-dialectal communication. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of oral utterances collected from native speakers of the Meno-Mene dialect in Sakra Selatan Village and the Ngeto-Ngete dialect in Kerongkong Village, East Lombok, as well as supporting written sources from relevant literature. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, while the data were analyzed using contextual semantic analysis. The findings reveal twenty homonymous lexicons that share identical phonological forms but convey different meanings in each dialect. These semantic discrepancies frequently lead to misunderstanding and ambiguity in daily communication among speakers from different dialectal backgrounds. The study demonstrates that identical lexical forms do not necessarily represent identical meanings across dialects, highlighting the importance of dialectal competence and contextual understanding in maintaining effective communication. This research contributes to the study of semantics and dialectology by providing insights into inter-dialectal semantic variation in the Sasak language and supporting regional language preservation efforts.

Abstract

This study aims to explore linguistic creativity in restaurant naming in Manado, Indonesia, and how restaurant names reflect local identity, global influences, and commercial branding strategies. The study was conducted using a descriptive mixed-methods design, which involved analyzing 230 restaurant names across five districts of Manado: Malalayang, Sario, Mapanget, Tuminting, and Wenang. Data were analyzed using descriptive frequency analysis and qualitative linguistic interpretation, aided by semi-structured interviews with 20 restaurant owners or managers. The results indicate that the linguistic elements used in restaurant names are Indonesian, local, foreign, and hybrid, and are used strategically. Indonesian elements offer familiarity and wide accessibility, local terms offer cultural authenticity, and foreign and hybrid forms create modern, global, and differentiated brand images. Linguistic creativity is manifested in the form of metaphor, abbreviation, phonological appeal, lexical innovation, and culturally marked terms like “Rumah Makan,” “Warung,” and “Kios.” This study contributes to the field of linguistic landscape and commercial naming studies by demonstrating that restaurant names are not merely business labels but semiotic resources used to negotiate local identity, global aspiration, and market positioning.
