Abstract

Abstract This study analyzes the aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances, focusing on the Wahyu Katentreman play performed by puppeteer Cahyo Kuntadi. The study aims to identify the causes, processes, and implications of aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit performances and their impact on the sustainability of this traditional art form in the modern era. Using Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction theory as the primary approach, this research also references Jakob Sumardjo’s paradoxical aesthetic theory and Sunardi’s concepts of nuksma and mungguh. A qualitative research method with an interpretative analysis technique was employed, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. The findings indicate that aesthetic deconstruction in this wayang kulit performance is driven by changing audience preferences influenced by materialism and hedonism. The deconstruction process is evident in the transition from sacred to profane elements, the fusion of various performance styles from Surakarta, Yogyakarta, and East Java, as well as the integration of spontaneous humor within the Punakawan characters. The implications of this deconstruction include the emergence of new references for young puppeteers, increased appreciation of wayang kulit among the millennial generation, and economic benefits for karawitan music groups and local communities. Thus, this study asserts that aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit not only contributes to innovation in performing arts but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the relevance of traditional culture amidst dynamic social changes.

Abstract

This study examines manifestations of gender inequality and power relations in the film Borderless Fog (2024), nominated for Best Picture at the Indonesian Film Festival. Employing Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research analyzes dialogues involving the female protagonist, Sanja Arunika, to reveal how linguistic choices reflect gender-based power relations. Using a qualitative, interpretive approach, it analyzes the film's English-subtitled script to investigate how the female detective protagonist, Sanja, is constructed in relation to dominant patriarchal discourses and gendered power relations. Selected script segments are contextualized and interpreted to uncover the implication stance on gender representation in societal norms. The findings demonstrate that male characters consistently position Sanja as an object through utterances emphasizing her physical appearance, fragility, or external affiliations, thereby diminishing her role and undermining her professional authority. While the film challenges stereotypes by portraying Sanja as competent and resilient, it simultaneously critiques the systemic patriarchal structures embedded in male-dominated professions. The discussion connects these findings to broader feminist discourse, highlighting how media representations can either perpetuate or contest gender inequality. This study contributes to the understanding of gender dynamics in Indonesian cinema, which simultaneously reproduces and subverts gender norms within institutional and cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the personal and collective doxa in Kampung Pentigraf Indonesia (The Indonesian Pentigraf Village or KPI), a community started by Tengsoe Tjahjono. This study applies Bourdieu’s theory of the field of cultural production as the frame to observe how Tjahjono’s personal beliefs, or personal doxa, are spread to the members of KPI and hence converted as collective doxa. This study uncovers how Tjahjono’s values shape the community dynamics by exploring socialization and internalization practices in KPI. The findings show that the personal doxa rooted in Tjahjono’s symbolic capital reinforces social structures in KPI, where his power drives the community’s practices. This study emphasizes the role of social sanctions in preserving the community’s principles to guarantee that the Pentigrafs written by the KPI members obey the rules. Moreover, the study discovers how vertical and horizontal interactions in the community contribute to social reproduction, allowing KPI standards to be passed down to new members. This study contributes to understanding how literary communities play a role in cultural production, proposing insights into the dynamics of symbolic power and the practices of socialization and internalization in a minor but highly organized creative setting.

Abstract

Toponyms or place names are important linguistic facts. Toponyms can record people's spatial awareness of the surrounding environment. This article explores local ecological knowledge in toponyms in the Waduk Jatigede area. In this area, there are 28 villages from 5 sub-districts affected by the construction of Waduk Jatigede. Data collection in this study used participant observation and interview methods. The data analysis procedure includes four stages: (1) transcription of recorded data; (2) categorizing data from the transcription of recordings or notes based on the classification of toponymy aspects; (3) interpretation of local knowledge about ecology in toponymy; (4) concluding. The results show that polymorphemic toponyms dominate toponyms in the Jatigede Reservoir area. In addition, toponyms in the Waduk Jatigede area are also dominated by toponyms with physical aspects, including hydrological, geomorphological, and biological-ecological characteristics. This finding shows that Sundanese people have a close relationship with the surrounding nature. This local ecological knowledge contains Sundanese people's ecological awareness about the Waduk Jatigede area's ecological characteristics, including water, soil, flora and fauna. This local ecological knowledge is useful as a policy recommendation for natural and ecological disaster mitigation in environmental development, which is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

This study examines the two subcategories of ambivalent sexism, hostile and benevolent. As they are experienced by the female characters in Cho Nam Joo's Saha. The study investigates how sexism is portrayed in character conversation, actions, and narrative descriptions using a qualitative text analysis method. The ambivalent sexism theory, which was created by Susan Fiske and Peter Glick, was used to analyze the data. Results show that benevolent sexism takes the form of overly protective attitudes and exaggerated praise, while hostile sexism in the book takes the form of verbal and physical abuse. Both of these behaviors reinforce social inequalities and gender stereotypes. The research concludes that Saha effectively portrays the complex dynamics of sexism in a patriarchal society, providing insight into how such themes contribute to discussions on gender studies and literature.

Translation is not just a transition between different languages, but a transfer and transformation of meaning and form between different cultures. This study aims to analyze translation errors in the landscape of bilingual information in the form of memes, as well as explore the translation errors that result in cuteness and humor. This study uses a qualitative approach with the data source of memes from websites containing Arabic-English bilingual information. The data were analyzed using error analysis and through informative discourse analysis. The research findings show that the bilingual information memes have shown translation failures namely literal translation errors, loss of context and meaning, misinterpretation and lack of contextual explanation.
