Abstract

The role of Arabic-Indonesian community in Islamic da 'wah in Indonesia is quite important. However, there are few studies of their role that have been conducted It is for this reason that the writer would like to observe the role and the existence of this community from the social-historical perspective. There are two theories in understanding their relationship with indigenous people. The first is identical theory which perceives that historically Islam is identical with Arab and therefore cannot be separated from Arabic people. The second theory is that the arrival and the development of Arabic community in Indonesia, on the perspective of anthropological history, is closely related to the history of conversion to Islam and the development of Islam in society. The writer tries to observe their social life and their active role in the development of Indonesian society.

Abstract

In Islam, people know a teaching and mystical practice called sufism. Its main objective is to purify oneself (tazkiyat al-nafs) to get closer to God. Time-wise, sufism can be mapped into orthodox and neo-sufism. Teaching substance-wise, it is classified into akhlâqî and falsafî sufism. So far, commoners and academician such as Max Weber believe that sufism followers behave asceticly, live an austere life, have no capitalistic spirit, and so forth. This false perception obviously needs a correction for people understand the behavior of tariqa followers as an organized sufism community among society. In Indonesia, tariqa followers include Sadziliyah and Shiddiqiyah. The basic question is if they live an austere life so they do not have to contribute to the economic life of nation. Result study shows that according to Sadziliyah people, wealth has spiritual, economic, and social meaning by centralizing business activities in houses and market. Meanwhile, Shiddiqiyah followers consider that wealth has spiritual, economic, social, cultural, and preached meaning in various efforts. Therefore, both tariqas teach a balance between spiritual (worship) and material obligations, ukhrâwiyah and dunyâwiyah obligations as taught by neo-sufism. In addition, it shows a relationship among religion, sufism, and work ethic.

Abstract

The dichotomy between religion and non-religion knowledge has existed in the Islamic classical thought. However, dichotomy has not impacted much on the intellectual matters. In the perception of classical ulama both of the knowledge was considered important, therefore, both were necessary to be mastered. The pioneered ulama on the science and deeds recognized the validity and scientific position of each group. It is different from the western modem sciences that often denied and downgraded the religious knowledge. However, the western science perception influenced Moslem society through imperialism. It emerged a strict dichotomy between religion knowledge taught in the (traditional) Islamic education and the (secular) non-religion knowledge taught in general education institutions. The Islamic knowledge perspective has viewed that natural phenomena do not happen without any relation with Ilahi’s power as the phenomena are not more than the God’s creative area. Therefore, learning the non-religious knowledge and understanding closely God’s creation system is significant.

Abstract

Theoretically, poverty is a phenomenon brought about by practices of economic policy that deviates the principle of equilibrium. Islam regards the economic discipline (the use of productive resources by taking into accounts of cost efficiency and most advantages of social utilily) as part of equilibrium in social responsibility. Economic function as part of social responsibility is urgently demanded by Islam in order to achieve a harmonious equilibrium in the relationship between the haves and the haves- not. In Islam, many social responsibility mechanisms can be performed among others through zakah, infak, sedekah, wakaf, jizyah, kharaj, rikaz, ghanimah, and so forth. This thesis pays attention to the problems of zakah fund management. In this research, it was found that there are four kinds of zakah fund raisers, namely the bureaucratic model, the business model, the non-government organization model (NGO/ormas) dan the traditional model zakah fund raising agents or institutions.
