Abstract

This phenomenological study examines how appreciation influences interpersonal relationships among teachers at X Senior High School in Surabaya, Indonesia. In response to increasing concerns about workplace stress, teacher conflicts, and emotional disengagement, appreciation is identified as a key factor in promoting emotional well-being and professional harmony. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with three teachers and analyzed using thematic analysis. Five main themes emerged: (1) positive dynamics of appreciative interaction, (2) appreciation as social capital, (3) the spiritual dimension of appreciation, (4) barriers to appreciative behavior, and (5) internal and external support factors. Results indicate that appreciation—expressed through simple acts like greetings, praise, or assistance—builds trust, motivation, and collegial solidarity. Teachers view appreciation not only as professional communication but also as a spiritual practice embodying gratitude and divine love. Internal factors such as proactive attitudes, emotional resilience, and past positive experiences support appreciative behaviors, while external factors like school culture and peer support reinforce them. The study concludes that embedding appreciation within school environments improves teacher morale, reduces emotional stress, and fosters a healthier, more collaborative culture. Recommendations include implementing emotional intelligence training, leadership that models appreciation, and further research across various school settings.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country rich in diverse cultures, ethnicities, races, and religions. Migration for educational purposes is a common phenomenon, with many young people pursuing higher education in different regions. This quantitative study investigates differences in the quality of friendships between migrant and non-migrant university students, examined through the lens of multicultural personality. Participants were 184 active students at the University of Surabaya, aged 18–25, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire–Short Form (MPQ-SF), the McGill Friendship Questionnaire–Friend’s Functions (MFQ-FF), and several open-ended questions developed by the researchers. Data analysis used ANCOVA and independent t-tests via SPSS. The results showed that multicultural personality significantly influenced friendship quality, but there were no significant differences in either friendship quality or multicultural personality between migrant and non-migrant students. Open-ended responses revealed that students choose friends based on shared tasks, hobbies, and personal traits rather than migration status. These findings suggest the need to consider other influencing factors and expand future research to diverse university settings to better understand student friendship dynamics.

Abstract

Millions of commuters travel to and from Jabodetabek daily, facing traffic congestion and overcrowding in public transportation. Previous studies have shown that commuting stress has various negative effects on individuals. This study aims to examine the commuting stress experienced by workers in Jabodetabek and its impact on sleep quality and self-rated health. Data were collected cross-sectionally using self-report questionnaires, with 113 Jabodetabek commuters participating in the study. Linear regression analysis revealed that commuting stress had a significant negative effect on self-rated health (β = -0.534, p < 0.001) and sleep quality (β = -0.312, p < 0.001). Additionally, travel duration was found to be positively correlated with commuting stress. Beyond its theoretical contributions, this study offers practical implications for companies in considering remote work strategies and for the government in emphasizing the importance of improving the quality and availability of public transportation.

Abstract

High workloads in government agencies, if not managed properly, can lead to boredom as well as physical and mental fatigue, which in turn may trigger burnout. This study aims to examine the effect of workload on burnout. The research employed a quantitative approach with 50 employees of UPTD X in East Kalimantan Province as subjects, selected through a total sampling technique. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed a significant effect of workload on burnout with a p-value = 0.000 (p < 0.05). The contribution of workload to burnout was 69.7%. Based on these findings, UPTD X in East Kalimantan Province is advised to implement a transparent performance management system aligned with the main tasks and roles of each employee and to ensure a fair distribution of assignments across all employees.

Abstract

Students in Sleman Regency often experience academic pressure that can lead to stress and burnout, affecting their psychological well-being. Such conditions impact both mental health and students’ academic and social functioning in higher education. This study aims to investigate the influence of self-compassion on flourishing and to examine the moderating role of growth mindset in this relationship. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected from 132 students in Sleman Regency selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used included the Self Compassion Scale, Flourishing Scale, and Growth Mindset Scale. Data analysis was performed using moderated regression analysis. The results were obtained from the analysis using moderated regression analysis with a correlation coefficient value (r) of 0.035 (<0.05) The results showed that self compassion had a significant positive influence on flourishing, and the growth mindset not be able to moderated the relationship significantly. Growth mindset moderation of the relationship between flourishing and self-compassion was not significant (Z = −0.929, p = 0.353, 95% CI [−0.287,0.0941]). These findings indicate that growth mindset functions more as a mediating mechanism than as a factor that strengthens or weakens the relationship between flourishing and self-compassion.

Abstract

Teacher performance is a key determinant in enhancing the quality of education, as it significantly influences student achievement and overall school effectiveness. However, previous studies have highlighted consistently low levels of teacher performance across various educational levels. This study investigates the mediating role of job satisfaction in the relationship between sense of calling and teacher performance. Using a quantitative correlational design, the study involved 321 teachers in Lamongan who were over 25 years old and had at least two years of teaching experience, selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used were the Job Performance of Teacher Scale, the Teacher Job Satisfaction Scale, and the Sense of Calling Scale. Data were analyzed using Hayes’ mediation analysis method in SPSS. Results indicate that job satisfaction significantly mediates the relationship between sense of calling and teacher performance (LLCI: 0.0881; ULCI: 0.3341; p <.05). These findings suggest that enhancing teachers’ sense of calling alone is not sufficient schools must also foster job satisfaction through healthy work environments, strong professional values, and effective communication with key stakeholders to optimize teacher performance.
