Abstract: Press in this country is joying optimal freedom since the falldown of Soeharto regime. But western-style freedom of the press is echoing numerous negative impacts. Prominent among those impacts are reports or news that considered defamation. Several libel cases have been brought to the court. Defendants (publishers or chiefeditors) are frequently lost the cases, being nished by imprisonment and/or huge emount of fine, resulting in the outcry of some journalists. The judges are accused of obstructing press freedom, or no apprehension whatsoever on the vital role of the press in democracy.

Abstract:In this paper I attempt to argue that gamelan performances are not just musical phenomena in which audiences can enjoy the aesthetic of the performances but at the same time they are modes of communication.Using a specific mode audiences can extract messages to conduct musical communication. In eliciting the messages audiences use the “connotative complex†mode where they can get message(s) among other varieties of possible messages.

Abstract: This research is an descriptive qualitative study about the changes of TV commercial’s themes of Sony PlayStation console in USA at 1995-2010. As human beings, the product has its life cycle. The life cycle of products is very influential in the formation of advertising messages. The Sony PlayStation is one brand of video game console generation to the five released by Sony Computer Entertainment and the most popular in the history of the gaming industry. The life cycle of PlayStation consoles reaches its peak at the time of appearance of the PlayStation 2 console. During the life cycle of the last PlayStation has released several television commercials used to promote this console for the consumer. Abstrak: Riset ini merupakan studi deskriptif kualitatif tentang perubahan tema iklan televisi dari produk konsol Sony PlayStation di Amerika Serikat pada periode 1995-2010. Seperti manusia, produk juga memiliki siklus hidup. Siklus hidup produk sangat mempengaruhi pembeuatan pesan iklan. Sony PlayStation adalah salah satu merek generasi konsol video game yang dikeluarkan oleh Sony Computer Entertainment dan sangay populer dalam sejarah industri games. Siklus hidup produk konsol PlayStation mencapai puncaknya pada saat dimunculkannya konsol PlayStation 2. Selama periode siklus hidupnya , PlayStation mengeluarkan beberapa iklan televisi yang digunakan untuk mempromosikan konsol kepada para konsumen.

Abstract: The representation of women and men in public discourse are often problematic. In everyday discourse, women are still considered as secondary and inferior to men. This presents a problem when taking discourses on women into media realm. The profile of workingwomen is often displayed in media mainly through male viewpoint. This study aims to look at the media coverage of women success in public sector. The framing analysis method is used to analyse the framing issues of workingwomen in Suara Merdeka newspaper. The study found that the representation of workingwomen in Suara Merdeka is still dominated by male perspective. Abstrak: Gambaran perempuan dan laki-laki dalam wacana publik sering kali masih problematik. Dalam wacana sehari-hari, perempuan masih dinomorduakan. Problem ini menjadi lebih kompleks saat masuk ke ranah media. Profil perempuan pekerja sering ditampilkan melalui perspektif laki-laki. Studi ini bertujuan untuk melihat pemberitaan media mengenai keberhasilan perempuan di sektor publik. Metode analisis framing dipakai untuk memdedah pembingkaian isu-isu wanita pekerja dalam surat kabar Suara Merdeka. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa representasi perempuan pekerja di surat kabar Suara Merdeka masih didominasi oleh sudut pandang laki-laki.

Abstract: The political transformation in 1998 introduced a new era of Indonesian media which respects the public interest and implements a democratic model. The changing led to a new media-politics that have democratic character. This article will focus on the self regulation mechanism that becomes very popular in democratic mass media system. Those favouring self-regulation mechanism have usually justified it on the grounds that it is less damaging to freedom of expression than legal control. However this mechanism is not a panacea for all ills, because self-regulation can only work if certain pre-conditions are met. The analysis will be done by several conceptual frames, i.e: the concept of media in political transition, concept of media politics, self regulation mechanism, and statutory vs voluntary regulation.

This study explore the demography, behavior, the information needed and accessible media audience of the Festival Film Pelajar Jogjakarta (FFPJ), Festival Film Dokumenter (FFD) and Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival. A quantitative descriptive method using questionnaire through convenience survey was employed. Finding show that most of the festival attendees are teenagers and young people who study in university. JAFF’s audience is more heterogeneous compares to other festivals. Repeated visit is relatively low. The most influential information sources are: friends recommendation, website and social media. Most of the festivalgoers choose the festival programs carefully based on website information and catalogue message.

Abstract: Persuasion is a communication process to establish or change attitudes, which can be understood through theory of Rhetoric and theory of Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). This study elaborates these theories in a Public Lecture series which to persuade the students in choosing their concentration of study. The result shows that in term of persuasion effectiveness it is not quite relevant to separate the message and its source. The quality of source is determined by the quality of the message, and vice versa. Separating the two routes of the persuasion process as described in the ELM theory would not be relevant.Abstrak: Persuasi adalah proses komunikasi untuk membentuk atau mengubah sikap, yang dapat dipahami dengan teori Retorika dan teori Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). Penelitian ini mengelaborasi teori tersebut dalam Kuliah Umum sebagai sarana mempersuasi mahasiswa untuk memilih konsentrasi studi studi yang didasarkan pada proses pengolahan informasi. Menggunakan metode survey, didapatkan hasil yaitu tidaklah cukup relevan memisahkan pesan dan narasumber dalam melihat efektivitas persuasi. Keduanya menyatu yang berarti bahwa kualitas narasumber ditentukan oleh kualitas pesan yang disampaikannya, dan sebaliknya. Memisahkan proses persuasi dalam dua lajur seperti yang dijelaskan dalam ELM teori menjadi tidak relevan.

Abstract: Seperti halnya aktivitas sosial lainnya, praktek jurnalisme sebagai bagian dari proses produksi pesan media massa boleh dikatakan tidak akan pernah dapat kedap dari pengaruh gravitasi kepentingan ideologis yang mengelilinginya. Pada titik ini, keterkaitan praktek-praktek jurnalisme dengan kepentingan ideologis yang melingkupinya dapat diidentifikasi dari kecenderungan para jurnalis ketika melakukan framing (pembingkaian) terhadap realitas sosial yang diangkat sebagai realitas media. Seorang jurnalis akan selalu melakukan seleksi dan sekaligus memberikan prioritas terhadap elemen-elemen fakta tertentu dari realitas sosial tersebut dengan berdasarkan diri pada pertimbangan-pertimbangan ideologis yang hampir selalu dipengaruhi oleh konstelasi kepentingan di sekitarnya. Demikianpun sebaliknya, media massa sekaligus juga memiliki kekuatan strategis sebagai stimulator bagi munculnya sejumlah konstruksi sosial yang berpengaruh bagi publik. Berangkat dari dua pengandaian di atas, tulisan ini ditujukan untuk melihat secara sederhana peran potensial media massa dalam konflik seperti yang terepresentasikan dalam kecenderungan pemberitaannya untuk berpihak terhadap pihak-pihak yang bertikai.

This study explores the phenomenon of Vlogger as a new business in the digital media industry in Indonesia. Vlogger refer to social media users who regularly upload a variety of video content with various themes. We used case study to describe and analyze Youtube’s significant role in managing Vlogger communities, and also design support systems to make the communities growth and sustainable. We also explore Vlogger role as Online Influencer. This study is expected to be one of the references related to Vlogger phenomenon in the context of digital media studies in Indonesia.
