Abstract

This paper discusses how Indonesian student diaspora has interacted with their peers and built their identity through media by looking at the role of Indonesian student diaspora media since pre-independence era to reform era (1900-2016). This paper found that Indonesian student diaspora media have existed since pre-independence to reform era. Each had its peculiarities in terms of type and role of media influenced by the dynamics and socio-political developments in Indonesia.

Abstract

Jokowi’s image as a leader is populist-nasionalist. However, there were some contradictory news with the related image in the social media, which is released in December 2016 until January 2017. This research aims to explore those distorted news. It is revealed that the government media framing did not dominate the social media. The news were interpreted or added in accordance with the viewer’s interest that leads to a hoax. This research reinforces Barthes, Baudrillard, and Eco that the era of social media brings the death of reality.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of Vlogger as a new business in the digital media industry in Indonesia. Vlogger refer to social media users who regularly upload a variety of video content with various themes. We used case study to describe and analyze Youtube’s significant role in managing Vlogger communities, and also design support systems to make the communities growth and sustainable. We also explore Vlogger role as Online Influencer. This study is expected to be one of the references related to Vlogger phenomenon in the context of digital media studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Government communication system encounter extension and selling complexity. The aim of the study is to know how interrelation of government communication sub system in encounter extension and selling complexity in Kaligesing goat farming in Purworejo regency. The theory of the study is communication system in perspective of Niklas Luhmann. The study was used explorative case study method. The result of the study showed that extension sub system and breeding sub system not optimal in interrelation. So, information which produced and reproduced not solved complexity effectively.

Abstract

Groups and intercommunity interactions form global society. This study aims to describe the global aspect in the local cultural expression or vice-versa on YouTube videos. The cultural expressions include language, dress, cuisine, festivals and leisure creativities, social customs and lifestyle. Qualitative descriptive approach is used to analyze ten videos made by Southeast Asian young people. This research found that the locality expression goes global. Cultural expressions communicate the cross-cultural understanding especially in mainland, peninsula, and islands. This youth creativity describes the “glocality” of Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Malay, Java, and the West cultures.

Abstract

This study compares the framing’s patterns of the Chinese traditional media and social media in reporting the incident of Tianjin explosion in 2015. Applying frame-building and framesetting theory, this study explores the interplay between online opinions available on Weibo and the Chinese newspapers in different phases of the crisis event. Moreover, it examines the differences in framing the incident between the state-owned party media and the commercial media. The results reveal that various frames applied by different Chinese media in reporting the incident. A complex interplay between Weibo, the Communist-owned and the commercial happened, including framebuilding, frame-setting, and frame-interacting effects.

Abstract

The research aims to test situational crisis communication and attribution theories in Indonesian context. Crisis threats companies’ reputation and affects the public’s attribution which will lead to the creation of punitive behavior from the public towards the organization. The study used a quantitative approach with experimental method and content analysis in the pre-research. Involving 90 respondents, the research fi nds that mass media infl uences public’s attribution within the experimental group who were given positive and negative news. The research shows that the crisis history and the relational reputation determine the public attribution toward the initial crisis responsibility.

Abstract

Donald Trump’s policy on immigrants has been a controversy. The controversy culminated when the policy was reported by the media, such as Foxnews.com and Aljazeera.com. This study aims to compare news framing in both media, especially the application of ideology and political economic of media, as an effort to get objective and neutral reporting. This research uses qualitative approach with framing analysis method of Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The results show that framing by Foxnews.com and Aljazeera.com is in favor of the interests of media owners, namely Rupert Murdoch and the government of Qatar.

Abstract

The lack of digital media literacy education shall become requirement to the rises of horribly phenomenon in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to create the awareness on using social media smartly.  I used qualitative method that had been taken through purposive sampling. Since the Collaborative Learning Model of Digital Media Literacy was applied, students mindset about Digital Media Literacy meaning had shifted into the wiser social media users.

Abstract

This article aims to understand the various barriers and experiences of elderlies in learning how to use social media as part of their lives. For that purposes, an in-depth interview was conducted through qualitative method with phenomenology approach on two senior informants in Semarang area. The results of the study indicate the elderly are experiencing: (1) intrapersonal, (2) structural and (3) functional barriers. Intrapersonal barriers are overcome by social factors, whereas structural and functional obstacles are overcome by individual factors. It is also found that the overall elderly’s effort to adopt social media emerged out of necessity..
