Abstract

The eye is an organ that has many functions and is a vital organ in the body. The eyes have a part called photoreceptor which functions as light detector that will be stream to the retina of eyes according to its function. Based on data obtained from WHO, around 217 million people in the world have visual impairments. Refractive errors have several ways to correct them, one of which is using LASIK or with Refractive Lenticule Extraction, Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (RELEX SMILE). In a study conducted at the Eye Center Hospital, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China in 2015, the incidence of dry eye complaints after RELEX SMILE surgery was 11% - 24%. A hospital in Semarang, reported that the incidence of dry eye complaints after RELEX SMILE surgery was 12%. This research is a Literature review which is a type of research that gathers theories that are relevant to the material that is currently researched, namely regarding dry eye syndrome. Researchers collected a number of articles from several databases like MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, and national also international journals. The result of the study found several complications in the procedure for healing eye refractive errors using RELEX SMILE, one of which is dry eyes. Dry eyes after RELEX SMILE and LASIK surgery is caused by damage to the sensory nerves in the cornea which may be caused by incisions during surgery. The incidence of dry eye after RELEX SMILE surgery can be prevented by a thorough examination by looking for signs and symptoms of dry eyes, or using drops without preservatives to reduce the impact of dry eyes.

Abstract

Medicinal plants are plants that have medicinal properties or uses and are used to cure and prevent various diseases. Medicinal plants, both leaves, stems and roots, are partly used by the community for traditional or alternative medicine. The use of medicinal plants has evolved from generation to generation, with knowledge being passed down from generation to generation. In its utilization, medicinal plants have good opportunities, such as they are often sold as food supplements, use by the public is increasingly popular and promises minimal side effects and has challenges that must be faced, namely the need for scientific evaluation, a long time with large capital, there is a distance between preclinical models and its applications used in clinical trials as well as the lack of clinical trial data. Many drugs developed from natural sources have had revolutionary impact in medicine, including antibiotics, antiparasitic, antimalarial, lipid control agents, immunosuppressants for organ transplantation, and anticancer drugs. Medicinal plants that have properties or uses as medicinal ingredients which are currently being researched include miswak plants, centella asiatica plants, and mangrove plants.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disorder in the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Diabetes mellitus is described as an increase in blood glucose. DM cases in Indonesia rapidly increases. Diabetes mellitus  is a disease that requires anti-diabetes drugs continuously. Continuous use will have side effects that  encourages patients to look for alternative treatments that are cheaper, efficacious, without side effects, and easy to obtain such as herbal medicines. Many medicinal plants around the world contain antihyperglycemic compounds, such as Aloe vera. This is study experimental study using a randomized controlled design method with Post-test only Control Group Design. There were 24 rats consist of 4 treatment groups (K1, K2, K3, K4). (K1) = rats  were given by a standard diet. K2 = rats induced streptozotocin 40 mg/kgBW.K3 = rats were treated with metformin. K4 = rats were treated with Aloe vera extract 250 mg/kg BW. After 21st day,  blood glucose levels were measured. The research was conducted at the animal house of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung. Samples were analyzed using the one way Annova test. Blood glucose levels of the 4 treatment groups were K1 = 67.16 mg/dl, K2 = 366.33 mg/ dl, K3 = 77.83 mg/dl, K4 = 127.16 mg /dl. The blood glucose level in the control and treatment groups were significantly different (p<0,05).  Aloe vera extract ameliorates blood glucose levels of streptozotocin-induced diabetes in white rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous disease, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia caused by defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. However, in diabetes mellitus therapy, oral hypoglycemia drugs cause side effects in form of digestive tract complaints in patients, hypoglycemia, and weight loss. Black cumin seed extract as a herbal therapy can reduce blood glucose levels. This study aims to determine effect of administering Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) extract in reducing blood glucose levels in white rats induced by streptozotocin. This study used a pre and post test control group design with a sample size of 32 white rats divided into 4 groups with treatment for 21 days. The groupK- was given 2 ml of distilled water. The group K+ was given an injection of 20 mg/kgBW streptozotocin. Thegroup P1 was given an injection of streptozotocin 20 mg/kgBW and metformin 40 mg/kgBW. Thegroup P2 was given an injection of 20 mg/kgBWstreptozotocin and 200 mg/kgBW black cuminseed extract. Assessment of blood glucose levels is carried out using a glucometer. The results of the difference in the mean pre and post test blood glucose levels at K1, K2, P1, and P2 respectively were 2,34 mg/dl, 157,4 mg/dl, 251,33 mg/dl, and 185,33 mg/dl. This study used a one-way ANOVA parametric test (p<0.05) and continued with the post-hoc Bonferroni test (p<0.05). Administration of black cumin seed extract (Nigella sativa) can have effect of reducing blood glucose levels in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by streptozotocin.

Abstract

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, a head injury is damage to the head, not congenital or degenerative, but caused by an external physical attack or impact, which can reduce or change consciousness which can cause damage to cognitive abilities and physical function. Traffic accidents are the main cause of head trauma or head injuries. A 23 year old man came to the emergency room at Jendral Ahmad Yani Metro Hospital accompanied by his family with complaints of a single post-KLL headache in the Pekalongan area, East Lampung on August 20 2023, because he hit a monument and fell from a motorbike without wearing a helmet. History of fainting for 30 minutes, vomiting without spraying 3x after waking up. Complaints accompanied by difficulty opening the left eye, swelling and pain. On physical examination, vulnus excoriation, vulnuslaceratum and vulnuscontussum were found. The diagnosis of moderate head injury (CKS) accompanied by secondary injury and sinistra oculi hematoma can be confirmed by history taking, physical examination, neurological examination, and supporting examinations in the form of laboratory examinations, CT scans and MRI. Management in this case includes primary survey, secondary survey, observation of general condition and vital signs. The patient received further treatment in the Neurology ward for 3 days.
