Abstract

English lesson taught for undergraduate level is aimed at boosting their English proficiency as well as their performance. This study is conducted at FBIB Unisbank Semarang. The subjects of the study are the first semester students who took Performative Spoken English Class for the academic year of 2016/2017. This subject is aimed at improving students’ speaking skill especially in creating conversation using different speech events.            Students belong to English Department should know how to use the right speech functions in their talks but due to their low level of speaking mastery therefore they have difficulty in using English properly. This study is conducted in order to help the new students to improve their English speaking skill so that they will be motivated in talking using English in their speaking class.            Students as peer for their own classmates sometimes are not reluctant in giving comments though they realize that their peers need it. The teachers involve the students in giving their comments with the purpose to give positive feedback for their peers so that their English speaking skill will improve. Their comments are known as learners’ comments because they are English learners who take English class.The lecturers have the roles as the researchers therefore this study is called classroom reasearch. The researchers conducted research for one semester for the first semester students who belong to morning program. The number of students who are being observed is 20 students based on the list but in fact only 16 to 19 students who join the class. The researchers collected the data with the help of a student from regular morning program. The data are qualitative data in the form of learners’ comments in peer review rubric, teacher’s journals and teacher’s interpretation. After the students read the comments from their peer their motivation increased and their speaking skill slowly but surely improve.Keywords: Performative Spoken English, Learners’ comments, classroom research

Abstract

This research is about the Pattern Name of villages in Ponorogo At Duke Era Raden Katong Batoro which aims to know about the morphological word formation and meaning so that they could know the historical and cultural values of local communities as a historical process in the past in the frame etnolinguistic. Research data were obtained from two books, namely Ponorogo Chronicle Books Warok Purwowijoyo Work Volume 1 (1985) and a book entitled Empire Wengker and Reyog Ponorogo Warok Moelyadi Work (1986). Research shows that the name of the village in Ponorogo categorically, there are four types based on the figure, title, building and important events at the time of Batoro Katong. In addition, the names of the village are morphologically included zero derivation, affixation, composition and abbreviation. The historical significance which can be identified by its culture turns names the village come from the names of People Punggawa Raden Batoro Katong who have rendered and established Ponorogo, other than that the place where the village name is categorized building which can be identifying that a strong presumption formerly the place actually where the name of the building is located while the name of the village is a significant event that occurred at the time immortalized as the name of the village to remember the struggle of Raden Katong Batoro,  the founding father of Ponorogo.Keywords: Village Name and Etnolinguistic

Abstract

The study construes the types of politeness strategies reflected in the show and the factors that might influence the choice of the strategies. The theory of politeness strategies as proposed by Brown & Levinson (1987) was applied in order to analyze the data. The results indicate that the show demonstrates the application of bald on record (8), positive politeness (181), negative politeness (14), and off record strategies (6). The factors that might influence the selection of the strategies are the payoffs, which means considering the advantages in gaining satisfaction and respect from the speakers. The circumstances deal with the distance, power and ranking of imposition. The distance between the speakers is low as they are friends, or at least they come from the same background - entertainment. The host has more power as he rules the conversations. The topic discussed was not a heavy topic, so the possibility of threatening other’s face might not be that significant.Key words: politeness strategies, talk show

Abstract

A dialogue or conversation is an important thing in the most of literary work. Authors use them to tell or illustrate their work. Especially is in the novel or short story. A dialogue or conversation can make the reader understand their work well. Every author has their characteristic on their writing. But most of them are always use one or some of the type of pragmatics. One of the type of pragmatic that usually used by an author is implicature. Like as in the DILAN 1990 novel by Paid Baiq, some conversations are use implicature to deliver an implicit meaning. There are some dialogues which delivered by some characters have hidden meaning. And sometimes, it will make the readers will think twice to understand what is the meaning of that sentence. Implicature is the approach which uses to explain some hidden meaning in the dialogue or narration of DILAN 1990 novel. This research focuses on the maxim of the dialogue and narration toward this novel to examine some hidden meaning that include in some part. This research use descriptive qualitative method and results the forms of implicature. They are maxim of relevant, quality, quantity and manner that used in the DILAN 1990 novel.Keywords: dialogue, novel, implicature, hidden meaning, maxim

Abstract

This study has an objective to describe the form of locution and illocutionary speech act in Mark Twain’s novel, The Prince and the Pauper. Based on Austin’s theory, he distinguishes kinds of speech act, i.e., three ways of doing things with words; locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary. This study is qualitative and just analyzes locutionary and illocutionary. Qualitative research is a study using an assessment method or research method toward a problem. Source of this research applies for primary code and secondary code. The prime code is the novel The Prince and the Pauper, and the secondary code in this research applies for some articles and journal relate to this research about locution illocutionary speech act. Result of this research produces form of speech act in Mark Twain’s novel, The Prince and the Pauper.Index terms: Speech act, pragmatics, novel, locution, illocutionary

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of ‘Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) and the Islamic Academics Values (BudAI) preservation' of prospective graduates of college of Languages (FB) Unissula term 1, April 2017, who are 52 candidates as reported, as basis of academic policy making. Survey method with the instrument of an on-line questionnaire is used to investigate the tendency of prospective graduates towards 'cultural diversity', by utilizing the ‘questionnaire form’ provided by 'google sheet'. The results of this study indicate a positive mood that graduate candidates are equipped with sufficient CCU and BudAI which enable them to work globally or cross-culturally adjusted but still affirmed themselves to Islamic values. These are the identity of Unissula graduates as part of eastern culture. This study is only at the cognitive level, and therefore, further researches are recommended with the other methods of observation and in-depth interview after certain period of time, both to the students (self-observation) and interviews with related parties (graduate users) to reveal the level of CCU and BudAI preservation of  FB Unissula graduation in the motoric and affective level. Keywords: Cross Cultural Understanding, BudAI preservation, Academic policy

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengambil judul “ Identifikasi Kesalahan Menerjemahkan Wacana Berbahasa Inggris kedalam Bahasa Indonesia Mahasiswa Semester IV FBIB, Unisbank Semarang”yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa sering kesalahan kesalahan menerjemahkan kata, frasa dan kalimat . Berdasarkan temuan temuan tersebut diharapkan dapat pula ditemukan sebab-sebab timbulnya kesalahan sehingga memungkinkan untuk menentukan langkah-langkah untuk memperbaiki dan mengembangkan materi yang betul-betul memenuhi kebutuhan yang pokok,  guna mengembangkan ketrampilan menerjemahkan wacana-wacana berbahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dengan baik dan benar. (Nida ( 1969) , menemukan bahwa dalam setiap terjemahan ada semacam informasi yang hilang (loss of semantic content), dan yang paling umum yang berkaitan dengan “content transfer”. Sedangkan Brislin ( 1970) mengklasifikasikan kesalahan-kesalahan terjemahan  ke dalam tiga kategori (1) addition (menambah) bagian-bagian tertentu yang ada dalam teks asli.(2) omission, dan (3) substitution.Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat dilihat bahwa kesalahan-kesalahan dalam menerjemahkan teks berbahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah berkaitan dengan masalah isi atau “content transfer”, terutama “idiomatic expression” dan “figurative meaning”. Hal ini sesuai dengan yang dikemukakan oleh Nida (1969) dan Brislin (1970) dan lainnya, yang menyatakan bahwa menerjemahkan dari bahasa satu ke bahasa yang lain, kesalahan-kesalahan yang paling sering terjadi meliputi content transfer, addition dan omission. Maka sesuai dengan hasil penelitian ini, pengajaran Translation ( terjemahan), yang perlu untuk diperhatikan adalah penerjemahan kata-kata dan frasa yang berupa idiom dan yang memiliki makna figurative. Kata kunci: identifikasi, idiomatic expression, figurative meaning

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menggunakan metode kolase itu efektif  untuk memotivasi mahasiswa meningkatkan English speaking skill. Penelitian ini deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode kolaboratif, pendekatan kolase, pemberian informasi, tutor peer review, planning strategies and self-monitoring, with  students’ feedback evaluations. Populasi penelitian ini mahasiswa Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis dengan stratified random sampling. Ada dua session grup diskusi untuk memperoleh data. Pertama dengan metode collaborative ; yang kedua dengan kolaboratif dan metode kolase. Pada  proses diskusi  kedua-duanya di monitor dan pada proses diskusi ke 2 mahasiswa di beri bahan sebagai sumber  untuk metode kolase. Pada setiap sesion dilakukan pair-group discussion dan  setiap grup saling berperan sebagai student’s  reviewer. Peneliti  memberi evaluasi berdasarkan pada Student Rubric Assesment (SRA) dari Brown. Hasil penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa  dengan metode kolase mendorong mahasiswa untuk memperoleh kemampuan speaking yang lebih efektif Kata Kunci: tutor peer review, collaborative, kolase, student’s reviewer

Abstract

Illocutionary acts is one of speech act types which means a speaker’s purpose in speaking is not merely to produce utterance that have an intended meaning. This study is aimed at finding the speech act types and illocutionary acts types used in the short Javanese conversation recorded by the researcher. This research is designed in descriptive qualitative. The procedure of analyzing the utterances is based on the criteria proposed by Searle (1997). The results show that the utterances produced by the students involved are mostly using assertive, followed by directive and commissive. There is no expressive and declaration illocutionary actperformed in the conversation.Key Words: Conversation, utterance, speech acts,illocutionary acts.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penyesuaian apa saja yang terjadi pada penerapan prosedur naturalisasi dalam penerjemahan. Selain itu penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat keakuratan, keberterimaan dan keterbacaan kata-kata hasil terjemahan dengan menerapkan prosedur naturalusasi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan sumber data diambil dari dokumen surat resmi seperti MoU, Sertifkat, Piagam dan lain-lain. Sedangkan data sekunder penelitian ini diambil dariinforman dan Kuesioner. Peneltian ini menggunakan Metode pada translational. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa terdapat empat penyesuaian fonetis dalam penerapan naturalisasi dalam penerjemahan, yaitu, (1) Penyesuaian ejaan dan lafal, (2) penyesuaian ejaan tanpa penyesuaian lafal, 93) penyesuaian lafal tanpa penyesuaian ejaan, dan (4) tanpa penyesuaian ejaan dan lafal. Penerapan prosedur naturalisasi dalam penerjemahan termasuk kedalam kategori akurat, berterima dan terbaca dengan prosentase keakuaratan (90,20%), keberterimaan (92,78%), dan keterbacaan (91,75%).Key words: Natutralisasi, penerjemahan, surat resmi
