Abstract

Living in a multicultural and multilingual society, on one hand, provides individuals with opportunities to expand their social network, enhance cultural understanding and adopt new language. However, on the other hand, this can lead to language shift, interchangeably called language change, in which individuals gradually abandon their mother tongue in favor of a more dominant language. This paper investigates the phenomenon of language change in the 2004 movie entitled “Spanglish” The research employs qualitative research design, describing the dialog based on the movie. It is expected that this research can contribute to develop an understanding of the dynamic nature of language, and to the educators and researcher for further research. Abstract

The effect of the TOEFLGo application on the reading proficiency of Grade 12 students at MA Masalikil Huda Tahunan Jepara is investigated in this study. The pretest and posttest results of 46 students who were split into an experimental group (using TOEFLGo) and a control group (using traditional methods) were compared using a quasi-experimental approach. Linear regression and paired sample t-tests were used to analyze the data. The results showed a substantial correlation (R=0.793) between the initial and final scores, and a considerable improvement in posttest scores (average: 73.04) when compared to the pretest (62.4). The results show that TOEFLGo improves reading comprehension, especially for students with high proficiency. Score fluctuation, however, indicates that low-proficiency learners require specialized support. In order to meet each student's unique learning needs, the study suggests incorporating digital resources such as TOEFLGo into English language training. Abstract

This study examines the strategies used by online beggars on TikTok to gain sympathy and donations from audiens, as well as the resulting social and economic impacts. The phenomenon has emerged alongside the growth of social media, particularly TikTok’s live streaming feature, which allows users to receive virtual gifts as donations. This research employs a qualitative method using a virtual ethnography approach. Data were collected through content observation and in-depth interviews with six informants actively conducting live broadcasts. The finding reveal that online beggars utilize various strategies such as coin battles, emotional storytelling, performing challenges, and involving children during live strams. These tactics are intended to foster emotional connection and provoke audiens sympathy. The analysis is guided by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice, including the concepts of habitus, social and symbolic capital, and the dynamics of the digital arena. Economically, some informants earn significant income used for daily needs or small businesses. However, socially, the practice raises controversy due to its potentially manipulative. Thus study offers insights into emerging digital social realities and highlights the need for regulation regarding online begging practices on social platforms. The data were collected from conversations among junior and senior students majoring in English Literature at Jakarta International University. Observation and note-taking were employed in this research to acquire the data. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. The findings were presented in the form of an analysis of students’ utterances that contained Indoglish features. Therefore, this research contributed to filling the gap in Indoglish studies within international academic settings and helped raise awareness among readers about Indoglish features that are often unconsciously uttered in Indonesia. This research resulted in the students uttering all those 6 features mentioned by Endarto, with the most used feature is Singular/Plural Error in Indonesian English, and the least used is Active/Passive voice in Indoensian English. Abstract

Music lyrics frequently convey social meaning and emotional depth. The emotional sentiments in Coldplay's song "Fix You" are powerful and offer hope, empathy, and encouragement. This study uses Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework to investigate the interpersonal meaning in the lyrics of "Fix You," paying special attention to the mood and residue structures. The study interprets how linguistic choices convey relationships between the songwriter and listeners using a qualitative descriptive method in conjunction with content analysis. The results reveal that the majority of the phrases in "Fix You" employ declarative moods, suggesting that the singer wants to reassure and enlighten rather than tell or challenge. This is in keeping with the song's prevailing tone of empathy and support. To sum up, the interpersonal significance in “Fix You” represents emotional connection and reassurance, showing how linguistic choices contribute to the song’s comforting and motivational message. Abstract

Madrasah education plays a strategic role in shaping students’ religious values, moral character, and literacy practices. However, classroom instruction in many madrasahs remains dominated by text-based and teacher-centered approaches, which can limit students’ opportunities to actively construct meaning. This article explores the implementation of multimodal project-based learning in madrasah classrooms through the lens of Islamic education. Guided by Sociocultural Theory and a narrative inquiry approach, the study examines how multimodal activities, such as drawing, storytelling, and limited digitally supported tasks, support literacy development while allowing teachers to integrate Islamic values into everyday learning practices. Drawing on teachers’ narratives and classroom experiences, the article highlights both the pedagogical possibilities of multimodal learning and the challenges faced by madrasah teachers, including limited resources, curricular rigidity, and emotional demands associated with instructional innovation. The findings suggest that multimodal projects create spaces for more meaningful, and value-oriented literacy practices in madrasah classrooms, positioning teachers as reflective agents who negotiate between curriculum expectations and students’ lived experiences.

Abstract

Films often use popular music to guide how viewers understand a story, relying on the audience's emotional connection to familiar hits. This research analyzes the inclusion of *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” in Deadpool & Wolverine to determine the discursive role of a famous pop track in a modern superhero movie. The study investigates how the intersection of lyrics, film visuals, and cultural history creates new meanings. Specifically, it explores how a well-known song is recontextualized to generate irony and humor while influencing the film’s underlying message. Applying a three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis, the study examines the song's linguistic features (micro-level), its production and marketing within the franchise (meso-level), and its relationship to broader social norms (macro-level). The results indicate that the song’s repetitive and accessible nature makes it a flexible tool for cinematic reinterpretation. Ultimately, the analysis reveals that while the use of the song seems subversive, it tends to uphold existing cultural values rather than challenge them. The study highlights how soundtracks utilize familiarity to build meaning, demonstrating the effectiveness of multi-layered discourse analysis in studying pop culture.
