Abstract

Bong Joon-Ho’s Narrative Directing Style: A Case Study of the Films Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), and Parasite (2019). Bong Joon Ho has gained significant international recognition after winning the Best Picture category at the 2020 Academy Awards and bringing home trophies for Best International Feature Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Director for his film Parasite (2019). This achievement marked a historical milestone  because it is the first time in history that an Asian film has won the Best Picture category. This certainly brings a breath of fresh air to Asian cinema, including Indonesia. Departing from this phenomenon, this study analyzes the film form of several works directed by Bong Joon Ho, by dissecting the narrative structure and narrative as a form of his directing style. The researcher selected three film samples for analysis, namely, Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), and Parasite (2019), all three of which were chosen to represent different genres and narrative forms, namely, crime-thriller science fiction, and comedy-drama. The data collection technique used is the observation method, regarding the aspects and narrative structures used, as well as the forms of the narrative. The relationship between narrative structure and narration will be examined in more depth. Its significance for film scholarship lies in expanding the body of knowledge of film forms produced by South Korean films, with their distinctive narrative forms. Bong-Joon-Ho's narrative directing style shares a common narrative, utilizing both limited and unlimited storytelling in a combined manner.

Abstract

Comparative Study of AIGC-Based 3D Animation Production Transformation versus Traditional 3D Animation in Cat Content. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the transformation of 3D animation production, by contrasting AI-Generated Content (AIGC)-based workflows with traditional 3D animation in cat-themed content. Employing qualitative content analysis and Christian Fuchs’ framework of capital circulation, the research compares The Garfield Movie as a representative of traditional animation with the YouTube channel Cartoon Tube HD as an example of AIGC-driven production. Findings reveal that AIGC dramatically reduces production costs from approximately USD 60 million to merely USD 20–50 per video, shortens production time from months or years to only 1–3 hours, and transforms the labor structure from hundreds of animators to only 1–3 prompt engineers. The efficiency of surplus value  reaches 1,900% for AIGC, significantly higher than the 328.33% of traditional animation. AIGC further enables sustainable global distribution via social media with recurring monthly revenues of USD 200–1,000. The study concludes that while AIGC substantially enhances production efficiency, it intensifies the commodification of media by incorporating audience free labor. Despite its economic advantages, this transformation raises serious ethical concerns regarding the exploitation of creative labor and content homogenization. The research recommends further studies on the long-term cultural and ethical implications of AIGC for the digital animation industry.

Abstract

Design of the Short Film “Gelebah” Using the One-Shot Technique to Construct a Representation of Hyperreality (A Film Aesthetics Approach). The design of the film Gelebah, featuring one-shot visuals, is a cinematic work that responds to a middle-aged man's profound longing for his mother's love, which subsequently triggers hallucinations. The researcher creates a cinematic impression representing human life that persists despite deep sorrow. The film is produced using one-shot and long-take techniques from start to finish to convey a seamless reality of life. This design results in a precise one-take shot production process for Gelebah and demonstrates the practical implementation of cinematography techniques, ensuring they move beyond mere theoretical concepts. The use of one-take shot in this film successfully creates a hyperreality phenomenon that blurs the distinction between the audience's reality and imagination. Visually, Gelebah utilizes camera movements such as following objects, eye-level angles, and a variety of shots ranging from wide shots to close-ups. The one-shot technique effectively directs the audience's emotions in alignment with the directorial vision and serves as a valid technical reference for studies on long-take and one-shot cinematography.

Abstract

Designing the Sriwedari Wayang Orang Expository Documentary Film as a Medium for Cultural Preservation for Generation Z. Wayang Orang Sriwedari Surakarta is a traditional performing art that continues to survive amid changes in media consumption and audience preferences. In this context, cultural preservation can no longer be understood solely as maintaining a performance tradition, but also as developing forms of communication that remain meaningful to younger audiences. This study aims to design an expository documentary film about Wayang Orang Sriwedari as a medium of cultural preservation for Generation Z. The design employed four stages: research, pre-production, production, and post-production. Data were collected through field observation, documentation, in-depth interviews, existing studies, and target audience research. The findings indicate that the relevance of Wayang Orang Sriwedari for young audiences is shaped by story adaptation, the use of humor, sensitivity to contemporary issues, and the use of social media. These findings were translated into a documentary with an expository approach and thematic structure to present information in a clear, concise, and communicative manner. The resulting film demonstrates that documentary can function not only as visual documentation, but also as a medium of representation and a cultural communication strategy that is more closely aligned with Generation Z.

Abstract

A Typology of Two-Dimensional Architectural Photography at Historical Tourist Sites in Kuningan as a Means of Developing Sustainable Tourism. This study aims to analyze the application of two-dimensional design photography typology on historical tourism objects in Kuningan Regency as a strategy for developing sustainable tourism. The research employs a qualitative method with a Practice Based Research (PBR) approach, in which photographic practice serves as a means of visual exploration to identify the documentary, aesthetic, and symbolic characteristics of historical sites. The three main objects studied include Situs Makam Van Becks , Gedung Paseban Tri Panca Tunggal and Gedung Perundingan Linggarjati. The analysis shows that the documentary typology of Situs Makam Van Becks presents visual authenticity through the balance of lines, shapes, and natural textures, reflecting the harmony between humans and nature. The aesthetic typology of the Gedung Paseban Tri Panca Tunggal highlights rhythm, color balance, and composition that represent the beauty and wisdom of Sundanese culture. Meanwhile, the symbolic typology of the Gedung Perundingan Linggarjati conveys historical and nationalistic values through simplicity of composition and the sacredness of space. Overall, this study emphasizes that two-dimensional design photography is not merely a medium of documentation but also a tool for cultural interpretation that strengthens local identity and supports the preservation of historical heritage within the framework of sustainable tourism in Kuningan Regency. This study integrates a typology of two-dimensional nirmana-based photography with a Practice-Based Research (PBR) approach as a visual model to support the construction of sustainable tourism imagery based on local culture.

Abstract

Implementation of Audio Description to Promote Inclusion  for the Visually Impaired  Audiences in the Documentary Film Tiada Batas. This study is motivated by the limited implementation of audio description in Indonesian documentary films, particularly in the context of media accessibility for visually impaired audiences. While previous studies have examined audio description within the field of audiovisual translation, its application in practice-based documentary production remains limited and underexplored. This research aims to examine the implementation of audio description as an inclusive strategy and to analyze its impact on audience comprehension. The study adopts a practice-based research approach combined with qualitative methods. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with visually impaired participants. The findings indicate that the implementation of audio description significantly enhances audience understanding of visual elements while also strengthening the construction of narrative imagination. These results demonstrate that audio description functions not only as a technical accessibility tool but also as a narrative strategy that enriches the viewing experience in documentary filmmaking. This study contributes to the development of media accessibility discourse, particularly in the context of inclusive documentary film production in Indonesia.

Abstract

Visualizing the Unseen: The Hybridity of Experimental Video and Environmental Scientific Data for Public Advocacy. This article departs from the problem that quantitative environmental data is often too abstract to stimulate public engagement, thus requiring new approaches in science communication. This study investigates how the integration of scientific data and experimental video techniques—such as datamoshing, time-lapse, and augmented reality—can create stronger environmental narratives for public advocacy. Using a practice-based research methodology, the article analyzes the case study of the River of Plastic project, a video installation that visualizes microplastic pollution data. The findings reveal the process of translating quantitative data into specific aesthetic video parameters, in which pollution concentration determines the intensity of visual glitches, scene speed, and color shifts, transforming invisible data into an immediate and emotional sensory experience. The study concludes that this hybridity not only produces artwork but also functions as a strategic innovation tool in science communication, proven effective in raising public awareness, sparking discussion, and strengthening evidence-based policy advocacy arguments.

Abstract

Interpretation of Dreams through the Short Film “Finding a Dream” Using Hybrid Animation Techniques. This study examines the creation process of the short film Finding a Dream, which uses hybrid animation techniques to interpret dreams. The work is based on the artist's personal experience of trying to understand the emotional connection with her deceased father. Hybrid animation techniques, which combine 2D and 3D animation, were chosen to  visually aesthetic and emotionally profound imagery. The creation of this work employed a Research-Based Practice approach in three stages: reflection, experimentation, and formation, with a focus on symbolism and innovative animation techniques. The results of the study indicate that hybrid animation can depict the difference between the real world and the dream world through symbols, such as the use of white lines on the father character, representing an unattainable presence. Furthermore, this study introduces hybrid animation as a potential approach in the Indonesian animation industry, particularly as an alternative to the dominance of 3D animation. It has been proven that 2D animation, through a hybrid approach, remains relevant and keeps producing rich, meaningful narratives. In addition to presenting compelling visuals, this work also explores themes of longing and the search for meaning, thereby strengthening the emotional narrative in the animation medium. The study concludes that hybrid animation techniques can be a significant innovation in the animation industry and offer new ways to explore complex psychological and emotional themes.
