Abstract

Food security is one of the important issues in the study of deagrarianization. In macro level, deagrarianization can weaken food security which is indicated by the ability of food production which continues to decline due to the structural transformation of the economy from agriculture to non-agriculture. The purpose of this study is to determine food security at the community level when the symptoms of macro deagrarianization have occurred. This research is conducted by qualitative methods. An ethnosociological approach is used by combining community case study methods and ethnographic methods. The results show that food security at the community level is still well-maintained. Deagrarianization has not diminished the ability of the community to meet their food needs. Communities have internal mechanisms that secure their food sufficiency through food strategies and non-food strategies. The food strategy is carried out through saving yields for grain stores (family food barns) and reduce the amount of consumption. Meanwhile the non-food strategy is carried out through diversification of livelihoods by relying on available extractive landscapes. Swamps (balongan) are used as a food source that provides various types of local fish, crabs and snails as a source of protein for family consumption and also for sale to local collectors.

Abstract

Mount Rokatenda has erupted several times, and brought about impacts on people in Palue Island, Sikka regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Since 1980, various attempts of disaster management through relocation have been carried out by the government, church, and non-governmental organizations. Unfortunately, the efforts to relocate the victims mainly fail because they always return to Palue Island. The threats of Mount Rokatenda and its vulnerability do not seemingly inhibit them to continue their lives there. This is evident in relocation attempt post-eruption in 2012-2013. The question is, how could the social and cultural aspects of Rokatenda victims hinder the relocation program? This ethnographic qualitative research which is done through in-depth interview and observation in April to May 2014 demonstrate that disaster events could also be cultural events. The emic aspect of the victims influence disaster management attempts, especially in the relocation program to the Besar Island. There is a feeling of secure and a sense of security from the ancestors, a view of prosperity for those who stay, and a strong value system that Palue Island is the place of birth, life and death has strongly bound the mythology and cosmology relationship of Palue people with their land. A re-interpretation of emic values through involving local traditional leaders is a strategic step towards the success of Rokatenda relocation program.

A change in economic condition in Indonesia brings about a change of woman position, from formerly domestic sector to recently public sector. The reason for choosing this job is that it is an easy job and does not require higher education, although the wages is low. Women in these jobs often experience physical and sexual exploitation, also  economic exploitation of labor. They have to work until very late, andand they do not have the rights of women workers such as safety and the right to have time off. Considering these conditions, the protection of working women in general and sales promotion girls in particular become very important thing that must be considered.

Abstract

Using Bourdieusian approach, this article explores the reflexive strategies of young jazz musicians in order to develop their musical practices in a contemporary urban context of Yogyakarta, a city of culture and activism in Indonesia. In detail, the reflexive strategy (Sweetman 2003; Threadgold Nilan 2009) will be explained as the manifestation of struggle in the field of cultural production (Bourdieu 1993). As an implication, young jazz musicians have to negotiate their musical practices with the reproduction of doxa and the representation of dominant agents in the jazz music field including the availability of public spaces in contemporary Yogyakarta. The resistance towards doxa will be explained based on the local narratives of the Yogyakarta jazz community as a mixture of the local and the trans-local scene (Bennett Peterson 2004). Furthermore, the reflexive strategy will be analysed through the lens of the youth culture perspective specifically as a manifestation of a mixture between post-subculture (Bennett 1999) and subculture (Blackman 2005). In their everyday musical practices, young jazz musicians produce their musical practices fluidly and flexibly as a lifestyle distinction as well as a form of everyday life resistance. In summary, this article shows the complexity of the musical processes of young jazz musicians in contemporary urban space of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
