Abstract

Internationalization of Japanese Higher Education is not a new issue, but has begin since 1983. In 1983, the Japanese Government lead by Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro announced its plan to accept 100.000 international students by 2000. The target number of international student was reached in 2003. In 2008, Japanese Government announced new plan to accept 300.000 international students by 2020. This plan called Global 30 or Ryuugakusei 30-mannin keikaku. To achieve this target, thirteen universities has been chosen to be pilot for the project. One of main aim of Global 30 is to develop system where student can learn in international method, so some university offer English program by invite English speaker lecturer, and English training for university’s staff. This paper reviews the internationalization of Higher Education in Japan, focus on Global 30 project.

Abstract

Japan has natural resources that can provide sufficient food, both from the mountains, the sea, and rivers. The four seasons it has also contributed to the diversity of natural products, which provide a variety of colors in the food. The seriousness of producing quality food, the use of unique food processing techniques, to artistic presentation, makes Japanese food a strong identity among traditional foods from other countries in the world. In its development, Japanese food openly receives influence from abroad, but still maintains its traditions, to create the concept of assimilation in it. Japan is able to pour cultural colors on its food and make Japanese food as a soft diplomacy of the country that is easily accepted by the international world. There are many factors that can be explored by researching Japanese food, so research on Japanese food can touch some of the domains, such as geography, health, sociology, and culture. This study will explore Japanese food from the eyes of culture.

Abstract

[Kotowaza in Cognitive Linguistic Analysis: The Use of Synecdoche]. This paper analyzes kotowaza using synecdoc through the study of cognitive linguistic. The background of this research is the difficulty of understanding relationships between the meanings of the kotowaza on foreign learners because of cultural differences and lack of dictionaries that support the process of understanding kotowaza deeply. The purpose of this research is to understand kotowaza deeply, determine the connection of these lexical-figurative meaning of Japanese proverbs using synecdoche based on the study of cognitive linguistics. The method used is a qualitative method in approach of cognitive linguistics. At the end of the study, it is concluded that synecdochecan be used to analyze the correlation between the lexical meaning and figurative meaning of kotowaza that contains a word or two which represents wider or smaller meaning such as kotowaza which related to the characteristics of an area or kotowaza that associated with number.

Abstract

(Title: The Effect of Anime and Manga Consumption on Japanese Language and Culture Learning) This research was conducted to look at how far anime and manga effect Japanese language learning among the students of the Japanese Program in the Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada. The data were collected via a question form. The question form was distributed to 2nd year and 3rd year Japanese students in May 2017. The questions in the questionnaire include the Japanese language learning motivation, the level of interest in Japanese anime and manga, frequency of consuming anime/manga, as well as the effect on the Japanese language learning by consuming the products. From the data obtained, things can be concluded as follows: 1) most of the students stated that the first time they knew Japanese was through anime/manga; 2) watching anime can support students’ Japanese learning, especially for vocabulary enrichment, listening exercises, and understanding the context of the use of Japanese words or expressions; and 3) most of the students experienced a change of perceptions about Japanese language and culture after learning Japanese in the university. However, the language used in the anime contains stereotypical elements (known as role language or yakuwarigo) and therefore yakuwarigo and sociological context in Japanese should be introduced to the students.

Abstract

(Understanding The Education Method Of Sasoko Kobayashi In Novel Totto Chan: The Little Girl At The Window By Tetsuko Kuroyanagi) This study was aimed to describe the humastic educational method applied by Sosaku Kobayashi at Tomoe Gakuen school in Totto Chan's novel: The Litle Girl At The Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. The method used in this research was descriptive. Based on the analysis of the study of Totto Chan's novel: The Litle Girl At The Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, it can be concluded that the educational method applied by Sosaku Kobayashi at Tomoe Gakuen school was a method of humanistic education including ways to create authentic personality such as (1) strengthen students' confidence in giving meaning to life  (2) paving the way for self-development, based on freedom and responsibility, (3) guiding learners to find life with self-motivation and desire to become more, (4) developing a worldview in a way original and expression in accordance with the students themselves. The four things can be seen through the learning activities in the classroom, learning activities outside the classroom, school rules, and the role of educators in learning.

Abstract

(Title: Strategy Of Commerce And Issues Of Japan Shop In The Netherlands Indies Before World War II) The early of 20th century was a turning point of Japanese economic activities in Dutch East Indies, along with increasing number of Japanese population, especially in Java. In that era, Japanese trading activities that dominated by Japanese goods pitchman like textiles, drugs, soap and the other daily necessary untill suburb of Java, changed into permanent economic activities in the form of a small shop that popular among Javanese society in that era as Toko Jepang or Japanese Store.            In the end of 1910 untill early 1940s, Japanese store’s activities were growing and increasing to become an icon in the economic relation between Japan and Dutch East Indies. During that period, there was increase and decrease in Japanese store’s activities, but at the world economic crisis in 1920s, Japanese Market was able to survive, even Japanese products from Japanese Store was better than Chinese and European products. Japanese store, that popular among indigenous was known for it’s good service, cheap price and good quality products.            This research is trying to find how Japanese store can build it’s connection and the factors that supporting and obstacling Japanese store’s growth in that era. In this research, besides the diaries of Japanese immigrants such as Jagatara Kanwa and Nanyou no Seikatsu Kiroku, Japanese newspaper of Touindo Nippou was used as main sources. Content analysis was applied as a method to determine the contents in those sources which were relevant to the topic of this research. It can be concluded that the success keys of Japanese store was marketing strategies that supported by a strong trade connection, beside another factors like the success of observing people’s needs and product marketing strategy.

Abstract

 (Title: Dajare Analysis in Advertising Product Name Japanese Food and Drink) Dajare is one of the language phenomena found in Japan. Dajare can be defined as one type of humor that is widely used to create a new sentence with identical phrases or the same words from the previous sentence. This study aims to find out how the form and meaning contained in dajare contained in the name of a Japanese food or beverage ads. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. Dajare formation is generally done by utilizing the sound similarity of a word to another word so as to form a new word that has a certain meaning. In this study, dajare was divided into two types, namely paradigmatic dajare and syntagmatic dajare. These types are formed based on three classifications, namely dajare homophones, dajare almost homophones and dajare inserts. The meaning that appears also varies, there are related meanings between word references and target words, there are also unrelated meanings between word references and word targets.

Abstract

[Ecolyrics in Japanese Children Songs:  A Review of Two Douyou] This paper is an ecolinguistic analysis of the lyrics of two douyou (Japanese children songs) – coined in this paper as ‘eco-lyrics’. The aim was to analyse the representation of the state of the natural environment and the hometown in the lyrics of Japanese children's songs and the value that Japanese society inculcates to their children in relation to the natural environment. The two songs chosen were furusato and kokyou no sora. As a qualitative-descriptive study, this paper focuses on the intertextual discussion using the coherence approach of Ramlan (1993) and the semantic product of Burnett (2003). The result are a representation of the natural environment for the Japanese society in two douyou consisting of a thick traditionality, a place of longing, a place where family and friends live, a place to return home, a place that is beautiful and blends with nature, a comfortable and beautiful place. Then the values embedded in his children consist of emotional semantics, empirical semantics, origin semantics, contextual semantics, and functional semantics.

Abstract

(Title: Aimai Hyougen as a reflection of Japanese implicit Communication) Japanese is known for its politeness in communication. There are many ways to express politeness in Japanese, having an implicit communication is one of them. This may cause some troubles to foreigners to understand Japanese communication. So, it is important to know the style of Japanese communication to avoid misunderstandings. The purpose of this study is to describe japanese implicit communication style. This study is done by searching some references from trusted sources so that the style of Japanese implicit communication can be concluded. The results of this study are there are some keywords in Japanese that usually contain implicit meaning such as chotto, saa, demo, muzukashi, ii desu. Those word represent Japanese communication style. Japanese who use those words are highly predicted that there are something that is hard to tell to the interlocutor. Beside those word, understanding Japanese culture especially communication culture is also important.

Abstract

 (Title: Structure and Meaning of Suffix ~Gatai in Japanese Sentences) suffix ~gatai is a suffix that attached to verbs. This research aims to describe the structure and meaning of suffix ~gatai. The data which is used is obtained from the websites, such as yourei.jp, kotonoha.gr.jp, and other sites that contained research topics. The data were collected by observation method and writing technique. Then for data analysis using agih method. The results of the analysis are presented by the informal method which explained with simple words. Based on the results of the analysis, suffix ~gatai can be attached to 3 categories of verbs (1) kanyouku or idiom, (2) ninshiki or cognitive verbs, and (3) hatsugen or verbal verbs. 2 meanings contain suffix ~gatai in Japanese sentences, (1) cannot be realized or something can't happen, and (2) not accepting an agreement.
