Abstract

An aggressive logging becomes a chronic problem in Indonesia. There is an inappropriate paradigm in the understanding and treating of the environment, especially trees and forests. This article examines the discourse of nature conservation based on Balinese local wisdom as presented in visual cartoons of Bog-Bog magazine (No 10, Vol 10, 2012) which theme is tree. Information data taken from cartoon Bog-Bog magazine No. 10, analyzed by the theory of semiotics and supported by the theory of visual design elements. The pictures from the Bog-Bog cartoon show the artistic, critical and humorous efforts of the Bog-Bog cartoonists in constructing Balinese local discourse based on customs, belief, and Hindu religion in an important message of preserving the forest in particular and nature in general. Analysis shown that Bali has a number of local wisdom such as the sacred trust system of tree as one of the ecological messages for forest preservation. An example is the concept of palemahan in the Hindu philosophy of Tri Hita Karana which is important for the harmony of human relationship with nature as a source of prosperity. Bog-Bog cartoon successfully convey the nature conservation discourse based on Balinese local wisdom with the construction of humor, critical, and parody discourse.

Abstract

AbstractThe Balinese language is the language is only known fromBalinese inscriptions dated to 882 – 1050 AD, then evolvedto Modern Balinese. This article discusses about Old Balinesephrases and their development to Modern Balinese,i.e. by explaining the structure or word order of the phrases. The Old and Modern Balinese phrases will be analysedby applying a theory of structural linguistic typologywhich is developed by Greenberg, while the analysis of theinternal structure of the phrases uses sub-theory of Governmentand Binding (GB) which developed by Chomskyand his followers, particularly X-bar theory. The claim ofthis theory is a phrase always has a head from the samecategory of a phrase as a whole, and this means that thestructure of phrases is always endocentric. Formation roleof a phrase is projected from lexicon and in this article theanalysis will be presented using a tree diagram. It appears that the Old Balinese and Modern Balinesephrases are endocentric, consisted of noun phrases, verbphrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases whichtheir head are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions. It is interesting to note that in its development (from OldBalinese to Modern Balinese), there are innovations orsome changes have taken place from Old Balinese phrasesto Modern Balinese phrases. Innovations in word orderchange consisted of reversal of word order, simplificationor reduction, and elaboration. These innovations areinternal and regular.

Abstract

This article analyses the elements of general knowledge in the folklores of Balinese Bali Aga and in the elementary school-text books of the Dutch colonial period. The analyses focuses on how narrative texts which usually consider as fiction and contain unreal information are also expressing general knowledge and social and cultural facts. The object of this study are selected folktales of Bali Aga published in book form in 1987 and expositional text and short stories included the school text books published in the 1910s. Of the two books, 10 texts were chosen for discussion. Data were analysed with rhetoric and content analysis theories that give attention to the content instead of structure of texts. This article concludes that folklore, short story, and other forms of fictional genre are rich in general knowledge on social and cultural life and description on factual matters similar to expositional text genre. Thus, like expositional texts genre, narrative texts have the ability to tell stories and also to convey varieties of general knowledge related to the society that owned the stories. Abstract

Temple has been one of the popular tourist attractions in Bali.  This article is intended to discuss the development of Village Temple at Batuan, Sukawati, Gianyar as one of the cultural tourist attractions and the tourists’ response to it. This present study is a qualitative one. The data were collected through observation, library research and in depth interview in which 12 informants were interviewed. They were the management of Village Temple at Batuan and the tourists visiting the temple. The data were analyzed descriptively, qualitatively and interpretatively using the theory of commodification. The result of the study shows that the temple, which has been developed as a tourist attraction since 1980s, turns out to have improved the local people’s economy and cultural tradition. Therefore, it is suggested that the temple should be perpetually maintained and developed as a tourist attraction. The result of the study also shows that the tourists visiting the temple can acquire the knowledge of the Balinese culture. They become familiar with the religious tradition and cultural art of the Balinese people.  Such recognition of the existence of the Bali Hindu has been one of the forms of the attitude that religious pluralism is appreciated.

Abstract

Balinese people seem to realize that their existence in this world has a high dependence on nature as a buffer of life. One of the natural elements, especially trees that are very functional in the life of Balinese people, is banyan (beringin). Beringin, which is referred to as the waringin, wandira, and grodha agung, is preserved in almost all customary villages in Bali. Recognizing the importance of banyan trees in Balinese life, this study aims to analyze two problems related to banyan trees from the perspective of their functions and meanings. Qualitative methods are applied and data is analyzed by discourse theory. The results show that banyan trees are used as a means of yadnya ceremonies in Bali and are useful for curing various diseases, both caused by naturalistic (sakala) and personalistic causes (niskala). Symbolically the use of banyan in a pitra yadnya ceremony in Bali is interpreted as a means of purification to improve the quality of the ancestral spirit in the process of unification with the gods.

Abstract

AbstractA Western-style of theatre has developed in Bali since the turnof the twentieth century, but it has rarely attracted scholarly attention. Studies on the performing arts in Bali have mainly focused on Balinese (traditional) dance and drama. This should come as no surprise given that Balinese dance and drama have developed as a broad and inseparable part of Balinese custom and religious practice. Against this phenomena, this article traces the development of Western-style theatre in Bali through the artistic activities of the prominent playwright, performer and director, Abu Bakar. From the 1960s until the present, Abu Bakar has been an active promoter of Westernsty letheatre in Bali as well as in the main cities of Java andeven in Singapore. He has also has helped students and theatre groups around Bali to study and perform theatre. Initially, Abu Bakar established his own theatre group, Poliklinik, which hascontinued to stage performances as well as collaborating with young people or student theatre study clubs. His extensiverecord of artistic activity has been recorded in newspaper reports and reviews and these form the main source of documentation in this article. By examining qualitative data collected from newspaper archives and interviews, including with Abu Bakar, this article proposes a contemporary historyof theatre or modern drama in Bali.

Abstract

The spread of radicalism has ruined the social, cultural, economic, and harmony between religious believers in Bali. The bombings in Bali on 2002 and 2005, were carried out by people who were exposed to radical understandings, and their acts not only killed innocent people but also destroyed harmonious inter-ethnic relationship in Bali. This article analyzes the form of empowering social capital, as a model for preventing radical understanding to create social harmony in Bali. Data is collected with religious leaders and communities through observations, interviews and documents related to the development of radicalism, terrorism and intolerance in Bali. Data is analyzed qualitatively and examined using social practice theory. The results show social capital in increasing solidarity in terms of diversity, social capital in improving social relations, and social capital in increasing spiritual value. These forms of social capital can be used as models in preventing radicalism in Bali.

Abstract

Bali’s capital city of Denpasar has a number of heritage sites, including several buildings, museums and monuments. These sites have yet to be developed optimally as tourist attractions, as evidenced by their small number of annual visitors. This study explores the potential in reutilizing those cultural heritage sites for the development of heritage tourism, and to support the city government’s tour programme. Two interrelated issues discussed here include how the government of Denpasar preserves its cultural heritage, and how it promotes these sites as heritage tourism. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and a literature review employing heritage tourism theory and framing theory. The study presents two packages of heritage tourism tours with a duration of approximately three hours each: the Denpasar Heritage Track (DHT), which starts and finishes at the Bali Hotel, taking in the Puputan Badung Monument, Bali Museum, Jero Kuta Palace, and Maospait Temple; and the Sanur Heritage Track (SHT), which begins and concludes at the Grand Bali Beach Hotel, visiting the Belanjong Heritage, Intaran Market, Bajra Sandhi Monument, and Museum Le Mayeur. The DHTs are expected to increase the number of tourist attractions in Denpasar, contributing to more tourist visits to Bali, especially in its capital city.
