Abstract

The ancient Balinese people of North Bali have a tradition of cultivating rice on dry soil, which is called ngaga. The people of Pedawa Village, one of the cluster of five ancient villages in Banjar sub-district, Buleleng Regency, have revitalized this agrarian culture that had been lost for nearly half a century. This study analyses the livelihood of the ngaga tradition in Pedawa Village following of its new development in the last three years. The study focuses on the causes for the reviving of the tradition, as well as the challenges and opportunities that it presents. The study concluded that the reason for the reviving this tradition was due to the need for rituals at Pucaksari Temple. Meanwhile, the obstacle is mostly because of the economic value of the gaga rice This article provides a practical contribution to the process of growing gaga rice in dry land, a cultural practice that the local community of Pedawa in North Bali had been forgotten.

Abstract

This study is an intellectual exercise applying genealogical history writing. Its scope is neither to write factual truths of the past nor to seek the origin of an event, but to raise an issue of a cultural practice of the present. In the second decade of the XXI century, there are still some people who think, talk, and act on their belief in kawitan, glorified ancestors, and make it an entry point for their political interests. The result of this study is some knowledge which is not only valuable to the historiography of Indonesian history but also to the study of oral traditions. Through this study, it is expected that they both can complement each other, and that the science of history does not need to be awkward to use oral tradition as a source of information and researchers studying oral traditions can use genealogical methods in their research

Abstract

The Gering Agung Pararem or a great agreement on pandemic protection is one of the public policies based on the Balinese Village law to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. This Pararem is regulated to manage and control the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic by utilising the concept of duality known as sekala (material) and niskala (immaterial). This research aims to discover the duality application in the Gering Agung Pararem from a public policy perspective in Bali. With exploratory descriptive qualitative approach, this study reveals that the involvement of duality concept in the Gering Agung Pararem has a crucial impact on preventing the Covid-19 spreads in Bali. In addition, the social, cultural, and religious systems influence the Balinese people to be very obedient towards the existing village policies. This study contributes to society by developing alternative solutions for preventing Covid-19 spreads in Bali.

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy of Indonesia has weakened and contracted, although currently, the economy has recovered from it. The economy of Bali has experienced its lowest growth of all time. This is due to the huge impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism in Bali, which is its economic locomotive. This research aims to analyze the potential sectors that can be developed by each regency and city in Bali to boost its economic recovery. The research used the LQ and overlay methods. The results of the research show that the sectors directly related to tourism have experienced contraction. Meanwhile, the sector that has progressed considerably and becomes a leading one during the current pandemic is the primary sector. Therefore, the Government of Bali needs to carry out an economic structural transformation, so that the economy will be stabilized and emerge stronger against various internal and external shocks.
