Abstract

This article analyzes the footsteps of multiculturalism in North Bali by using as the object of analysis the Pura Pabean (Custom Temple) which is upheld by Hindus and Confucians. The analysis focuses on four things, the first, namely: describing the history of the founding of the Pabean Temple; the second regarding the form and function of the traces of multiculturalism in the Pabean Temple; the third the trace of multiculturalism in Pabean temple; and the fourth being the contribution of Pabean Temple in building multiculturalism in Bali. This study is a qualitative study whose data were collected using observation, interview, and literature review techniques. The data were analyzed using the theory of multiculturalism. The results of the analysis show that the Pabean Temple, which is believed to have been established in the 15th century, is historical evidence of multiculturalism that has been going on for a long time in Bali. This is also with the existence of two sacred buildings side by side in one temple area that is upheld, even though they are residents with different beliefs, namely Hinduism and Kong Hu Chu. This article provides a new contribution to the history and dynamics of multiculturalism that is maintained in Bali, especially from a temple called Pura Pabean in North Bali.

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic fair trade is thought to be a trading plan that can aid economic recovery. Companies that conduct fair trade schemes, on the other hand, face hurdles as a result of the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic. The East Bali Cashews (EBC) company, which offers fair trade for cashew nuts as a major commodity in Ban village, Karangasem, is highlighted in this study. This study seeks to explain the role of corporation as non-state actor in international trade by adopting a pluralist approach and the concept of fair trade. The study compares the implementation of fair trade by EBC during the COVID-19 pandemic with before the pandemic using a comparative qualitative method with primary data obtained through in-depth interviews. This study is significant in examining the critical role of corporation as primary actor in fair trade schemes that directly affect cashew farmers as small producers. In order to advance the welfare of farmers and cashew as a promising commodity for Ban Village's development.

Abstract

This study provides substantial data in designing the coffee hill-based rural tourism development model of Bongancina Village in North Bali. It focused on two objectives firstly, introducing opportunities by supplying the essential data of Bongancina Village’s potencies through tourist attractions identification; secondly, to analyze the challenges that are faced in rural tourism development. This study implemented the initial stages of the R&D approach with a qualitative analysis method. Data collected by using a passive participatory observation, interviews and FGD techniques. The results revealed that it has opportunities to be developed as rural tourism for economic recovery post the Covid-19 pandemic. The 8 criteria of tourist attractions which were classified into 75 indicators were in a feasible position. The challenges identified from the eight criteria can be utilized to determine the strategies in designing a development model. This study result can promote Bongancina Village and enrich the literature for further studies.

Abstract

Adat and religious values played a significant role in the rise of social movements and people power during the Dutch colonial era which is evident in the dynamics of Bali in particular. For centuries, adat customary traditions had been deeply rooted in Balinese communities and strongly contributed to civilization and culture. However, certain factors, such as social, economic and political disturbances have threatened the stability of Balinese communities and culture. From the local perspective of Bali, this posed a threat against the sovereignty of the kingdom of Bali, was still recognized as an autonomous territory. In light of the above issues, this article used an interdisciplinary approach to historiography in analyzing oral history and textual archives. It is hoped to offer a better understanding of how historical Balinese adat and religious values fostered an increase in social resilience and people power when faced with externally generated disturbances.

Abstract

Applying the CHSE (Cleanliness, Health, Safety, Environment Sustainability) health protocol is a new practice that initially received a light rejection from the community, including when visiting tourist attractions during the pandemic Covid-19. This article aims to identify the application of CHSE, identify the effect of its application on tourist loyalty and identify local cultural interventions through the involvement of customary village security guard of ‘pecalang’ on the effect of the application of CHSE on tourist loyalty. This article used a quantitative approach, with data analysis techniques using quantitative descriptive and Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis. The results showed that the implementation of CHSE was carried out well, with an average rating of 4.09 (good), and had a positive and significant effect on tourist loyalty. The involvement of ‘pecalang’ certainly contributes to the implementation of CHSE in tourist attractions, but the uncontrolled involvement of ‘pecalang’ can reduce tourist loyalty.

Abstract

This research aims to systematically review of literature on Bali tourism from 1976 to 2022. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach and utilizes 128 publications with the keyword “tourism in Bali” sourced from the Scopus database. This study concludes that the development of Bali tourism research has increased significantly. The contribution of Indonesian authors continues to dominate Bali tourism research. International authors play an essential role, especially in introducing the study of Bali tourism in the early thirty years. Furthermore, this review was successful in identifying the most commonly used topics, research approaches, and paradigms by researchers. This research, in particular, divides the evolution of the topics into four phases. The study’s sample of articles is restricted to those from the single database Scopus and solely in English. As a result, future research should be able to analyze articles from other sources, and in a broader range of languages.

Abstract

This paper focuses on undergraduate students’ critical reflection in a service-learning (S-L) project to promote the conservation of the birds based on local wisdom in a village in Bali. The students are working in a partnership with researchers and local communities from a traditional rural village, namely Desa Adat Demulih, Bangli regency. The objective of this paper is to show what students can learn and how they gain personal growth, civic-learning and academic enhancement during the S-L project. The finding shows students’ positive improvements in self-confidence, civic awareness, and community engagement. This study indicates a significance role of S-L based on critical reflection in documenting, deepening and promoting local identity and culture as a key component of community-bird conservation. In line with the finding, this study is expected to show how the interdisciplinary studies are cooperatively applied to draw knowledge from different disciplines by acquiring mutual relationship in learning their local knowledge.

Abstract

Balinese forms of social organization, collective labor and solidarity are gradually being transformed – and often displaced – by new social institutions and their attendant ideals, desires and pleasures. The rise of the nuclear family, as a new social ideal and institution, is one the more important developments in this connection. This essay examines rival conceptions of the family, and of household economy, that underpinned a debate that took place in a southerly Balinese ward over the provision of neighborly assistance during six-monthly odalan ceremonies. The analysis provides insight into how social and cultural transformation is understood and experienced at the level of day-to-day life.

Abstract

This article aims to bring the intellectual rigour of Cultural Studies to Balinese ideas about culture which confuse culture with ideology. Cultural Studies is not the study of culture, but its critique which deconstructs culture as misrepresenting actuality as an Imaginary convenient to regimes of power. The New Order articulated ‘kebudayaan’ to create a submissive populace happy to embrace global tourism. Culture is no longer how how people do things but marketable commodities posturing as ‘ancient tradition’. Bali as paradise is a cliché. The island now fulfils Madame Suharto’s dream of Disneyland. The capitalist fantasy of endless cost-free growth bears no resemblance to the sophisticated Balinese cosmology of Kali-Yuga, which ends in cataclysmic dissolution; or to popular ideas of the world as ceaseless transforming. Although kebudayaan dismisses ordinary people as stupid masses, they often escape the ideological straitjacket of kebudayaan by just getting on with culture as everyday life.
