Abstract

During the Abbasid period, Muslim culture and civilization was at its zenith. It was a period of economic prosperity and of great intellectual awakening. The Abbasid Caliphate provided the most congenial atmosphere for the advancement of learning and education. In fact, the reign of Mamun-ar-Rashid who has deservedly been called the 'Augustus of Arabs' formed the culmination of the intellectual achievements of the Muslims. He was followed by a brilliant succession of Caliphs who continued his work. Muslims gained access to the Greek medical knowledge of Hippocrates, Discords, and Galen through the translations of their works in the seventh and eighth centuries. These initiatives by Muslims could be seen in the different aspects of the healing arts that were developed. The translation movement of the twelfth century in Latin Europe affected every known field of science, none more so than medicine. The present paper is an attempt to give a detailed contribution of Muslims to science with special reference to medicine. It is in this context the present paper has been analyzed.

Abstract

The researchers found some issues related to most students struggling to understand the text because of new vocabularies that are unfamiliar for them. Students need the translation of those vocabularies in Arabic and some exercises that could help them understand the text in the book. Based on those issues, the researcher wants to help students by developing the Qirā’ah Rasyīdah book using exercises that could help the students understand the text. This research aims to find the method of developing this book using the exercises, finding the effectiveness of the book's utilisation. This study employs a research and development approach. There were 22 samples from 10th-grade students. We collected data using a test, questionnaire, and interview, while the data analysis technique uses a t-test formula using the SPSS program. Moreover, the result from this experiment is that the development method of Qirā’ah Rasyīdah by using exercise based on expert judgment is valid. Also, the result of using Qirā’ah Rasyīdah as a material for exercise effectively increases student understanding. Furthermore, this is based on the result of the level of (Sig.) 0,00 < 0,05, and this shows that the hypothetical hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

Islamic Cooperative Societies (ICSs) have come to be in Nigeria, though very recent. These societies are presently prototypes of the conventional cooperatives. This means that they operate by adapting the system of the latter to Sharīʿah. The objective of this paper is to examine some issues which view the ICSs as interest-based societies in the sight of some critics. These issues include the sources and expenditures of funds in the ICSs among others. The work studies the cooperative from the Islamic perspective, the basis of the cooperative, current reality of ICSs in Nigeria as well as finance in the ICSs. Secondary data was used to achieve the objectives of this study. The study proves that sources of fund from registration fee, fine and levies, administrative fee, sale of stationeries like loan form and loan bond form, and others cannot make the ICSs interest based institutions as opined by the critics, since those funds serve as tools protecting both the members and the cooperatives from being collapsed. It also suggests that the ICSs should expand the scope of sources of funds to accommodate the practice of some Islamic Financial Products (IFPs) or improve those they operate presently and introduce the real Islamic mode of lending. The paper, in addition, informs that ijthād should be adopted to handle the issues of ICSs.
