Abstract

This article examines the tradition of tepuk tepung tawar in the Malay community of Riau as a cultural practice that represents the close relationship between Islamic Sharia and local customs from the perspective of living hadith. This study is important because in the midst of modernization, cultural globalization, and religious purification trends, many local traditions are seen as separate practices from Islamic teachings, even considered irrelevant. The main problem of this study is how the tradition of Pat tepuk tawar reflects the values of the Prophet's Hadith and how the community maintains the religious legitimacy of the tradition in social life. This study uses qualitative methods with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through participatory observation on traditional ceremonies such as weddings, welcoming guests of honour, and Thanksgiving; in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, scholars, and the community; and documentation studies on traditional manuscripts and supporting literature. The results showed that this tradition contains prophetic values in the form of prayers of blessing, gratitude, symbolic protection and strengthening the relationship in line with the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad. This finding confirms that the living hadith is present not only textually, but also through symbolic cultural practices. The tradition of Pat tepuk tepung tawar shows a dialogical relationship between Hadith and adat, where local culture becomes a medium for internalizing Islamic values. This approach shows that adat and Shari'a can work harmoniously and strengthen each other.

Abstract

Research on the relationship between Islam and democracy has been extensive, but it still largely focuses on the normative compatibility between Islamic principles and democracy, with limited attention to the pedagogical implications of political Islamic thought for the strengthening of democratic education in Muslim-majority countries such as Indonesia. To address this gap, this study examines how the concept of democracy as an Islamic value in Rachid Ghannouchi's thought can be reconstructed as a normative framework for democratic education in Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach based on literature studies with conceptual-normative analysis methods of Ghannouchi's main works, especially related to the concepts of syūrā, maqāṣid al-syarīʿah, and al-dawla al-madaniyyah, and contextualized within Indonesia’s democratic challenges. The results of the study show that Ghannouchi's thinking not only affirms the compatibility of Islam and democracy but also provides a normative-educational model that places democracy as a process of forming a citizenship ethics based on justice, benefit, deliberation, and power limitation. The findings indicate that Ghannouchi’s concepts of the civil state and the maqāṣidi approach are highly relevant in responding to Indonesia's democratic challenges, including identity polarization, structural corruption, and the shrinking of civic space although their implementation requires institutional and pedagogical adaptation. This research contributes a novel pedagogical interpretation of Ghannouchi’s thought, which has predominantly been examined within the normative Islamic political framework.

Abstract

This study analyzes a phenomenon unique to the marriage culture of the Sambas community: the use of the tarup as a place that gathers invited guests, especially men, and serves as a medium of communication about Islam and local traditions. It should be noted that previous researchers have not paid serious attention to the tarup. It turns out that tarup is a medium that plays an important role in Islamic and cultural communication, ensuring that Islam and local traditions do not conflict but are complementary. Therefore, this study aims to review in depth the tradition of the tarup and its function as a medium of communication. This study uses a case study approach with a single instrumental case study type and data collection through documentation, in-depth interviews, and observation. Then, data analysis proceeds through the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and data conclusion/verification. The findings of this study confirm that tarup in the wedding procession of the Muslim community in Sambas is part of Islamic and cultural communication media, such as: the tarup tradition at Muslim weddings in Sambas is inseparable from Malay culture and Islamic teachings. Apart from serving as a place to gather invited guests, especially male guests, tarup also functions as a medium of Islamic and cultural communication. Another fact that I found is that tarup in the culture of the Sambas community is currently used as a platform for political campaigns. I refer to this fact as Islam and traditional living in the community.
