Abstract

Soursoup (Annona muricata L) was used in herbal medicine. This Annonaceae familymember contains alkaloids, tannins, and several other chemical constituents, includingasetogenin that allegedly to have cytotoxic potential. The n-hexane and methanolmacerating method was applied to isolate the secondary metabolites from the stem barkof this plant. The separation was carried out by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC),column chromatography, and gel chromatography respectively. Characterization of thefractions was established using UV-Vis and FTIR spectrophotometry. Toxicity assaywas conducted by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The LC 50 of 3 rd to 11 thfractionts of the methanol extract wer 4481.25; 37; 11.46; 0.85; 3.02; 0.23; 10.97; 8.53and 4093 ppm, respectively. The 3 rd and 11 th fractionts were not toxic, whereas otherfractions were toxic and potential to be used as an anticancer.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the total phenolics, flavonoids, andantioxidant activity of leaves and stems of C. amboinicus. Two different wateringtreatments (EM5 and FPE) were applied to C. amboinicus during cultivation. Theresults showed that leaves of C. amboinicus treated with FPE had the highest totalphenolic and flavonoid content than other samples. The total phenolic content was2.09 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAE)/g of dry weight (DW) and the total flavonoidcontent was 6.218 mg Catechin Equivalent (CTE)/g of DW respectively. The leavestreated with FPE also had the highest antioxidant activity by FRAP test (0.058 mmolFe +2 /g DW). The highest antioxidant activity by DPPH test was found in the leavestreated with EM5 (1.42 mg Ascorbic Acid Equivalent (AAE)/g DW). From this study itcan be concluded that leaves of C. amboinicus was the best source of antioxidant. FPEwatering treatment gave a better influence on total phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidantactivity of C. amboinicus than EM5.

Abstract

Cow bone ash is one of some alternative adsorbents, since it contains many oxide compoundssuch as calcium oxide that has an open framework structure. The aim of this study was todetermine the adsorption ability of the cow bone ash on nitrate ion based of the concentrationvariation. Nitrate analysis was carried out using UV-VIS spectrophotometer with brucine-sulfate method. The results showed that concentration affected the adsorption of cow bone ashon nitrate ion with optimum adsorption ability (80.050%) at 10 mg/L.

Abstract

Calcium oxide was a major component in bone ash. This calcium oxide has relativelyopened structure, so it can be used as an adsorbent. Its adsorption ability on sulfate ionhas been analyzed in an solution. The analysis of sulfate ion was carried out usingSpectrophotometer UV-VIS by turbidimetry method. The results showed thatconcentration of bone ash affected to the adsorption of sulfate ion with optimumadsorption of 80.833% at 10 ppm of bone ash.

Abstract

Chalcones are a class of α,ß-unsaturated carbonyl compounds that forms the central coreof various naturally occurring biologically active compounds. They exhibit tremendouspotential to act as a pharmacological agent. It has been reported that they were active asantioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antidepressant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory andother biological activities. The chalcone analogue of 2,5-dimetoxibenzaldehyde ((E)-3-(2,5-dimetoksifenil)-1-(4-hidroksifenil)prop-2-en-1-on) was synthesized and tested forits toxicity using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The purity of compoundhas been tested using TLC, melting point test, analytical HPLC. It was thencharacterized using UV, IR, 1 H-NMR and MS spectroscopy. LC 50 value of toxiccompound is <200μg/mL. Our result showed that (E)-3-(2,5-dimetoksifenil)-1-(4-hidroksifenil)prop-2-en-1-on compound was not potential as an anticancer since itsLC 50 was 1949 μg/mL.

Abstract

The derivatives of curcumin are secondary metabolites belonging to the phenolicgroup. Some of them were reported to have biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant activities. In this study, a curcumin of(3E,5E)-3,5-bis(2’-hidroxybenzilidin)-1-metilpiperidin-4-onefrom1-methyl-4-piperidinone with 2-hydroxy benzaldehide has been successfully synthesized usingmicrowave irradiation method with NaOH (20%) as catalyst. Reaction was carried outfor 1 minute at 180 watt. The compound resulted was in the form of yellow crystalwith a yield of 72%. The compound was characterized by measuring its melting point,identifying by TLC, and elucidated by UV-Vis, FT-IR, MS, 1 H NMR, and 13 C NMR.Our result showed that the compound had the targeted molecule structure. Antibacterialtest was carried out using the agar diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella enteritidis. Overall, inhibition zoneranged from 6.5 to 10 mm and showed a very weak activity.

Abstract

The secondary metabolites of the stem bark of Polyalthia pulchra were isolated andthan their toxicity activity assayed using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method.The sample was extracted by maceration method using n-hexane solvent. Structures ofthe isolated compounds were conducted using Gas Chromatography and MassSpectrometry (GC-MS). The dried sample produced 3.21 g n-hexane extract (0.25%)and 0.032 g 2 nd fraction of n-hexane (FH2) (0.0025%). The toxicity assay showed thatn-hexane extract and FH2 fraction was toxic with LC 50 5.9 and 7.1 ppm. From theresults of GC–MS analysis, it is shown that FH2 fraction contains campesterol,stigmasterol, and γ-sitosterol compounds with retention times 75.605, 76.568 and,78.172 minutes, respectively.

Abstract

Chalcone of 3-(4-Bromo-phenyl)-1-naphthalen-1-yl-propenone was synthesizedby the stirring method in Claisen-Schmidt Condensation with NaOH as the catalyst. Thestructure of the compound was confirmed by 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, IR, MS, and UVspectroscopy method. The compound produced was in 81.9% yields. Datacharacterization showed that the compound obtained was the targetted compound.

Abstract

Chalcone of (E)-3-(3-bromophenil)-1-(naphtalen-2-yl)prop-2-en-2-one has beensynthesized from 2- acethylnapthalene and 3- bromobenzaldehyd by aldol condensationusing the stirring method with base catalyst (NaOH). The yield obtained for thiscompound was 61.21 %. The purity of product has been evaluated using TLC, meltingpoint test, and HPLC analysis. The structure of the synthesized compound wasconfirmed by UV UV, FTIR, NMR, and MS analysis. Data characterization showed thatthe compound obtained was the targeted compound.

Abstract

Enzyme activity of cellulase can be concentrated by ammonium sulfate ((NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 )precipitation. The concentration was carried out by adding ((NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ) 80% saturatedprecipitation. The precipitated enzyme was redisolved in 1/70 of the original crude extractvolume. Enzyme activity of cellulase was assayed using CMC and avicel as the substrate.The results showed that in the concentrated enzyme preparation, the CMCase wasincreased 12 fold and enzyme activity of avicelase increased 3 fold. Activity and specificactivity of the final CMCase preparation were 1.1160±0,0622 U/mL and 7.43±0,417 U/mg,respectively. Activity and specific activity of avicelase preparation were 0.0520±0.0735U/mL and 0.34±0.487 U/mg, respectively.
