Abstract

Biodiesel is one of the most potential alternative energy for diesel machine since it isrenewable and environmental friendly. Biodiesel can be produced by transesterificationreaction of vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohol and catalyst addition. In this study,biodiesel was produced by transesterification reaction of waste cooking oil andmethanol using a CaO catalyst of blood cockle shells (Anadara granosa). Blood cockleshells (Anadara granosa) can be used as heterogeneous catalysts for biodieselproduction because it contains CaCO 3 that can be decomposed into CaO.Decomposition of the blood cockle shells as heterogeneous catalyst for biodieselproduction was carried out at 900 oC for 5 hours. The yield of biodiesel optimum was81.67% with 3% weight of catalyst, 1:15 of oil and methanol mole ratio, 3 hours ofreaction time and 60±2 oC of reaction temperature.

Abstract

Pyrazolines have been reported to possess many of interesting biological activities suchas antibacterial, antitumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, anticancer, andanticonvulsant activity. In this research, an analog pyrazoline 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(naphthalene-1-yl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-pirazol was synthesized by the reaction between 1-naphthyl chalcones and hydrazine hydrate using glacial acetic acid as catalyst undermicrowave irradiation. The compound showed a good yield, and then was characterizedby UV, IR and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity of this compound wasdetermined using agar diffusion method against the bacteria Escherichia coli,Salmonella typi, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial activitywere classified as very weak at concentrations of 10, 30 and 50 μg/disk with a diameterof inhibition produced of 6,2 – 8,1 mm.

Abstract

Flavanones have been reported to possess many of interesting biological  activities  such as antimicrobe, antitumor, antioxidance, antiinflammatory, antimalaria, anticancer, and anti-HIV. In this research, a  halogenated flavanone 2-(3 -bromophenyl)chroman-4-one was synthesized by cyclization of  (E)-3-(3-bromophenyl)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propen-1-one  using  sodium  acetate as catalyst  under microwave  irradiation. The compound showed a good yield, and then was characterized by UV, IR and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. The toxicity activity of this  compound was determined using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method against larvae Artemia salina  Leach and showed a good activity with LC50  = 0,457 µg/mL. The result indicated that this compound  was potential  as anticancer.

Abstract

The high  concentration of carbon  dioxide  in the atmosphere  is suspected  as the main cause  of global  warming,  therefore,  the carbon balance  is very  important  to  investigate. At this time, tropical peatlands are used as agricultural cultivation and plantation, one of them is in  Bengkalis,  Riau Province.  This study aimed  to measure  the concentration of CO2 based on  the relationship  of physical and  chemical  properties of  peat.  Measurements  were performed on  peatlands  which have  different  vegetation cover,  i.e. bush  land, oil palm  plantation,  and  secondary  forest.  The used method in this study  are Infrared  Gas  Analyzer  and  Gas Chromatography.  The average of obtained emissions based on  the effect  of  water table,  peat  temperature,  and  pH  (H2O)  of  bush  land, oil palm  plantation, and secondary forest  are  497,4  ppm,  523,2  ppm, and  457,2  ppm, respectively.

Abstract

Cerbera odollam  Gaertn. was used in traditional medicine as a laxative and antipyretic treatment of dysuria. This Apocynaceae family member contains terpenoid, steroid,   and several other chemical constituents, including iridoid that allegedly have cytotoxic activity. The  n-hexane and methanol macerating method was applied to isolate the secondary  metabolites  from the stem bark of this plant. The separation was carried out by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) and gel chromatography respectively. Characterization of the fractions was established using UV-Vis, FTIR, NMR,  and HR-MS spectroscopy which  produced a colored orange needless  cerbinal compound with melting point 188-189 0C. Toxicity assay was conducted by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test  (BSLT) method. The LC50 of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, 10  th, and  11th fractions of  each methanol extract  were  151.2; 56.96; 30.95; 3.37; 63.02 and 101.03 ppm, respectively. The 5th, 6th, and 9th fractions were not toxic  whereas other fractions were toxic and potential to be used as an anticancer.

Abstract

Flavanone is one of secondary metabolities included into flavonoid group that has biological activities such as anticancer, antitumor, antiproliferative, and antimicrobe. Moreover, flavanone is the biosynthesis main precursor for other types of flavonoids. In this research, 4’-methoxyflavanone has been synthesized from cyclization of 2’-hydroxychalcones derivatives by microwave irradiation using sodium acetate in ethanoland water as a catalyst. The yield obtained was 68,5 %. The purity of compound has been tested using TLC, melting point test, and HPLC. The compound was characterized by UV, IR,1 H-NMR, and MS. Toxicity activity was determined using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) against larvae of Arthemia salina Leach and with value LC50 = 3,29 µg/ mL. Accordings to the primary test, the flavanone compound is potentially as anticancer which was proven by LC 50 values <200 μg/mL.

Abstract

Cellulolytic bacteria are  bacteria that can degrade cellulose into smaller polysaccharides called cellodextrins or completely into glucose units. Glucose is used as a carbon source for bacterial growth. The aims  of this study were to isolate cellulolytic bacteria from estuary water of Siak watershed in  Bengkalis  area and to determine its  cellulolytic activity and specific activity. A total of 13 isolates of cellulolytic bacteria have  been isolated using commercial cellulose substrate containing 1% w/v carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). We found that 11 of the 13 isolates were Gram negative bacteria, while others were Gram positive. The isolate of C3 from Pelabuhan Roro showed the highest cellulolytic activity [(1.701 ±  0.166)  x 10-3 U/mL]  which was  not significantly different (p≤0.05) with cellulolytic activity of the  A3  isolate  [(1.605 ± 0.041) x 10-3 U/mL]. The C3 isolate also had the highest Cellulolytic specific activity [ (31.037  ± 4026) x 10-3 U/mg] and it was significant (p≥0.05) different with other isolates

Abstract

Sail River and Air Hitam River are effluent from Siak River where around the two rivers many social activities such as lodging, stall, market, hospital, home industry and dump are founds. Waste from the activities is able to decrease water quality of the rivers. Water quality of the rivers can be evaluated based on Government Regulation No.82, 2001 and Riau Governor Decree No.8, 2001. Water sampling was conducted along both of the rivers at four stations from Oktober to Desember 2013. Samples were taken in two weather conditions i.e rain and dry season. The results of parameter like temperature, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and turbidity in Sail river showed values which were above the limit but the results of Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) passed the limit of water quality. In Air Hitam river, all results of parameter were still above of the limit. The results of parameter like Phosphat and Pb at all stations at Sail river and Air Hitam rivers passed the limit, while of Nitrate result were still above the limit.

Abstract

The utilization  of  Manihot esculenta  to produce  platform chemical such as    levulinic acid  (LA)    has  been  studied    in  detail to  optimize    the  LA  production. The  LA production from  Manihot esculenta  was  monitored  using    reaction times  of  the hidrolysis reaction (3-85 min.),    the reaction temperatures  (150˚C, 170˚C,  and 190˚C), and  concentrations  of sulfuric acid as the catalyst  (1%,  3%,  and 5%).  The  products obtained  were  then  characterized using  high performance  liquid  chromatography (HPLC)    to determine the contents of gl ucose,  hydroxymethylfurfural  (HMF)    and LA. The result showed that  the LA production increased with  the  rise    of temperature  and catalyst concentration, whereas the    glucose and HMF  production decreased with    the rise  of temperature and catalyst concentration. The highest  production    of LA reached approximately 50% (based  on initial concentration of biomass) at reaction temperature of 170˚C and 5% of sulfuric acid concentration for 70 minutes of reaction time.

Abstract

Empty fruit bunches (EFB) are  solid wastes  produced in large quantity from palm oil industry. Thus, the wastes could cause serious problem to environment. The application of EFB as main component for composting process along with chicken dung is desirable. This research used the EFB combined with chicken dung, POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) and EM-4 in order to accelerate the composting process. Control’s sample was made using POME as an activator without EM-4. Quality of compost was determined according to its pH, water content and C/N ratio  at each 5 days for  30 days composting period.  The water content from the samples were determined using gravimetric method while total of N  were determined using Kjehdal method. The result showed that co-composting of EFB and chicken dung    using POME and EM-4 as the activators didn’t have significance difference  on the control’s sample with the value of P>0,05. Meanwhile, the value of pH, water and C/N ratio of composting products were respectively 7, 40-50% and 17-19 after 30 days composting period
