Abstract

This Research and Development (R & D) study develop an android-assisted electronic modules to study physics for eleventh grade students. Research subjects was students at one of senior highschools in Bantul. Critical and creative thinking skills average gain were 0.66 and 0.65 respectivto critical thinking skills and creative thinking skills respectively. There is a difference between the experimental class and control class with significance <0.05. This shows that the android-assisted electronic modules for learning the physics can be used to improve the critical and creative thinking skills students of class XI.

Abstract

Understanding students’ mental model is essential for an educator. This study elucidates elementary school students’ mental model about static electricity concept based on their geographical location. Sampel was 21 elementary school students from Kendari City and 17 students from Konawe Regency Southeast Sulawesi. Students’ ideas about static electricity phenomenon were collected by asking them to wrote their ideas about static electricity phenomenon in a piece of paper. Those ideas were classified according to its mental model type. Results suggested that students living in the city have relatively more conceptual thinking framework whereas students living in the regency area used a more intuitive thinking framework. Nevertheless, students from the city or from the regency area generally used everyday life analogy in interpreting static electricity concept.ABSTRAKMemahami model mental siswa sangatlah penting bagi seorang pendidik. Penelitian ini menguraikan model mental siswa Sekolah Dasar (SD) tentang konsep listrik statis berdasarkan lokasi geografis. Sampel adalah 21 siswa SD yang tinggal di daerah Kota Kendari dan 17 siswa SD yang tinggal di Kabupaten Konawe Sulawesi Tenggara. Ide-ide siswa tentang fenomena listrik statis dikumpulkan dengan cara meminta siswa untuk me-nuliskan ide-ide mereka tentang fenomena listrik statis di secarik kertas. Ide-ide tersebut kemudian dikla-sifikasikan berdasarkan jenis model mentalnya. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa siswa yang berasal dari pusat kota memiliki kerangka pemikiran yang relatif lebih konseptual jika dibandingkan dengan siswa dari luar kota yang lebih banyak menggunakan kerangka berpikir yang intuitif. Meskipun demikian, baik siswa yang ber-asal dari kota maupun dari luar kota pada umumnya menggunakan analogi pengalaman sehari-hari dalam menginterpretasi konsep listrik statis.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of the Revised-Bloom’s cognitive level questions in high school Biology Electronic Book (BSE). Research subject was 1,650 questions from BSE 2009 edition. Research instrument was documents’ analysis sheet in which it contains information such as questions code, descriptions, and its cognitive level type. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Results showed that high average occurrence percentage was found for questions developing lower-order thinking skills namely C1 or remembering (46.60%) and C2 or understanding (47.99%), although C3 or applying was still low (0.28%). For questions developing higher-order thinking skills, from C4 (analyzing) to C6 (creating), its average percentage occurrences were low. Therefore, the occurrence of the Revised-Bloom’s cognitive level questions, especially those developing higher-order thinking still needs to be improved.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemunculan soal jenjang kognitif Bloom Revisi pada Buku Sekolah Elektronik (BSE) Biologi SMA. Subjek penelitian adalah 1.650 soal yang terdapat pada BSE Edisi 2009. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah lembar analisis dokumen yang di dalamnya memuat informasi seperti kode soal, soal, dan jenis tingkatan kognitif taksonomi Bloom Revisi. Analisis data dilakukan secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rerata persentase kemunculan cukup tinggi diperoleh pada soal yang mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir tingkat rendah (Lower-Order Thinking Skills) yaitu soal C1 (mengingat) sebesar 46,60% dan C2 (memahami) sebesar 47,99%, meskipun untuk C3 (menerapkan) persentasenya masih rendah (0,28%). Rerata persentase kemunculan soal yang mengembangkan keterampilan tingkat tinggi (Higher-Order Thinking Skills) mulai dari soal C4 (menganalisis) sampai dengan C6 (mencipta) memiliki rerata persentase yang rendah. Oleh karena itu, kemunculan soal jenjang kognitif Bloom Revisi pada BSE khususnya yang mengembangkan Higher-Order Thinking Skills masih perlu untuk ditingkatkan.

Abstract

Numbers is an important concept in mathematics and one of the tested materials in TIMSS’s study. One of the efforts to increase students’ ability in solving TIMSS numbers questions is by developing TIMSS model-numbers questions. This current research investigated students’ ability and difficulties in solving TIMSS model-numbers questions, with 31 students in one of junior high schools in Central Java as a sample. Students’ ability in solving TIMSS model-numbers questions was measured by test with 32 multiple choice questions, whereas students’ difficulties when solving those questions were explored by students’ comment sheet. Mean test score indicates that students ability for all content and cognitive domains was moderate. Difficulties experienced by students in solving TIMSS model-numbers questions were misunderstood the meaning of the questions or error in changing fractional forms and making calculations. The results indicated that in addition to having no deep understanding of numbers, students’ opportunity to train their ability in solving TIMSS model-numbers questions was still insufficient.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to capture pre-service science teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) that is demonstrated during preliminary practical context in term of peer teaching program- a course conducted prior to teaching practice. Ten pre-service science teachers were involved in a semester long peer teaching program. Descriptive method was employed with the use of teaching artifacts, observation and self-reported survey for representing the way the participant integrate technology into their teaching. TPACK constructs were defined using relevant literature as frameworks. This study found that TPACK of  pre-service science teachers were still low and is not sufficient for teaching science in junior high school. Furthermore, it is needed several supporting program to prepare pre-service science teachers’ competencies in teaching science with technology. In this case, more sophisticated peer teaching program with better purchase is necessity to improve TPACK competencies of pre-service science teachers.

Abstract

Science is a body of knowledge that investigates natural phenomena which are sometimes complex, thus teaching science requires tools that can facilitate students in understanding that complexity. Tool to guide science teaching is science kit (KIT). This study investigated teachers’ skills in conducting laboratory works by using KIT. Samples were 30 elementary schools teachers in Pontianak.  The instrument used was observation sheets and questionnaires in which it was composed based on various aspects in conducting laboratory works. Based on questionnaire, teachers’ overall skill in conducting laboratory works was 72% in which it was categorized as Good, whereas based on actual laboratory works observation, teachers’ overall skill in conducting laboratory works was 64%, in which it was categorized as Sufficient.  Aspect receiving the highest score from questionnaire and observation was attitude.ABSTRAKIPA adalah disiplin ilmu yang meneliti fenomena-fenomena alam yang terkadang kompleks sehingga pengajarannya harus dilakukan dengan alat yang dapat memfasilitasi siswa dalam memahami kekompleksan tersebut. Salah satu alat untuk memandu pengajaran IPA adalah Komponen Instrumen Terpadu (KIT). Penelitian ini menyelidiki keterampilan guru dalam melaksanakan praktikum dengan menggunakan KIT IPA. Sampel adalah 30 orang guru Sekolah Dasar (SD) di Kota Pontianak. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah lembar observasi dan angket yang disusun berdasarkan berbagai aspek keterampilan dalam melaksanakan praktikum. Secara keseluruhan, keterampilan guru berdasarkan angket adalah 72% sehingga dikategorikan sebagai Baik, sedangkan hasil observasi langsung kegiatan praktikum menunjukkan bahwa secara keseluruhan keterampilan guru dalam melaksanakan praktikum dengan menggunakan KIT IPA adalah 64% atau dikategorikan dalam kategori Cukup. Aspek yang memperoleh skor paling tinggi dari hasil angket maupun hasil observasi adalah aspek sikap.

Abstract

The Pre-Class Tutorial have been implemented to improve conceptual understanding of basic physics concepts among the pre-service physics teacher at one of Education College in Bandung City. This study was motivated by the previous research findings that students encounter the conceptual difficulties and the lack of understanding in introductory physics course. Based on these findings, we developed pre-class tutorial that facilitate students either to construct their own concepts o rto apply the concepts. The descriptive method was used to 260 third-years students of Physics Education Department. The increasing of conceptual understanding was identified from the average score of students’ achievement on the exam test. The findings showed that the use of pre-class tutorial effectively improve students’ conceptual understanding.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to apply multimedia in enhancing students’ creative thinking skills. Research subject were eleventh-grade students that yet to learn redox concept, at one of senior high school in Bekasi. Experimental group was consisted of 50 students and control group was consisted of 51 students. Multimedia activities can be used to enhance students’ creative thinking by designing multimedia based on creative thinking activities. Students’ creative thinking enhancement is equal to students’ cognitive enhancement and research findings suggested that enhancement in all students’ creative thinking aspects by using interactive multimedia learning was significantly different than by PowerPoint learning. It was reflected by creative thinking enhancement of high and moderate criteria. The highest enhancement was on fluency (N-gain= 85.83%) and the lowest  was on flexibility (N-gain= 54.93%).ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggunakan multimedia dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kreatif siswa. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI yang belum belajar konsep redoks di salah satu SMA di Bekasi. Kelompok eksperimen terdiri dari 50 siswa dan kelompok kontrol terdiri dari 51 siswa. Kegiatan multimedia dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kreatif siswa dengan merancang multimedia berdasarkan kegiatan berpikir kreatif. Peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kreatif siswa adalah sama dengan peningkatan kognitif siswa dan penelitian menemukan bahwa peningkatan semua aspek berpikir kreatif siswa dengan menggunakan pembelajaran multimedia interaktif berbeda secara signifikan dengan pembelajaran PowerPoint. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kreatif dengan kriteria tinggi dan sedang. Peningkatan tertinggi ditemukan pada kefasihan (N-gain = 85,83%) dan peningkatan terendah ditemukan pada fleksibilitas (N-gain = 54,93%).

Abstract

Mathematical communication ability is an important ability that the students must possess. In this study, learning assisted with Macromedia flash MX was used to increase students’ mathematical communication ability. Aside from the use of software, the role of supporting tools in learning was also investigated. Subjects were 65 Vocational Schools (SMK) students divided into 32 students in control class (learning assisted with Macromedia flash MX) and 33 students in the experimental class (learning assisted with Macromedia flash MX and additional supporting tools, MFMX+). Mathematical communication ability was evaluated through written test. Results showed an increase in mathematical communication ability both in the control and experimental class, albeit to a different degree. Students in MFMX+ class showed a higher mathematical communication ability improvement compared to students in control class. Learning assisted with Macromedia flash MX improved mathematical communication ability and supporting tools maximize benefits that can be gained from the use of Macromedia flash MX.

Abstract

To become a teacher researcher, pre-service teachers should have sufficient education research skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of experiential learning in improving pre-service biology teachers’ skills in designing education research. Sample were 68 pre-service biology teachers enrolling in Biology Research Methodology course. Research instruments were objective test and research proposals assessment rubric. Objective test results showed that pretest average was 27.35% while posttest average was 40.94%. N-Gain value was 0.18 and this value indicates that the increment from pretest to posttest was categorized in low category. Results of proposal assessment showed that the average skill in designing education research was 59.15%. Proposal assessment results indicate that although experiential learning has low impact in improving cognitive aspect, this approach can help pre-service teachers in designing education research proposal.ABSTRAKUntuk menjadi seorang guru peneliti, mahasiswa calon guru harus memiliki keterampilan riset pendidikan yang memadai. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh pembelajaran experiential terhadap kemampuan dan keterampilan mahasiswa calon guru biologi dalam merancang riset penelitian pendidikan. Sampel penelitian adalah 68 mahasiswa calon guru biologi yang mengambil mata kuliah Metodologi Penelitian. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes objektif dan rubrik penilaian proposal. Hasil tes objektif menunjukkan bahwa rerata pemahaman mahasiswa calon guru biologi tentang perancangan riset pendidikan pada saat pretes adalah 27,35% sedangkan untuk postes adalah 40,94%. Penghitungan N-Gain menghasilkan nilai N-Gain 0,18 dan nilai ini menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan dari pretes ke postes termasuk dalam kategori rendah. Hasil penilaian proposal menunjukkan bahwa rerata penguasaan keterampilan merancang riset adalah 59,15%. Hasil penilaian proposal ini menunjukkan bahwa meskipun pembelajaran Experiential  kurang berpengaruh pada peningkatan aspek kognitif, pendekatan ini dapat membantu mahasiswa calon guru biologi dalam merancang proposal riset pendidikan.
