<![CDATA[Reading comprehension and writing as the crucial skills must be instructed effectively in order to engage the students in the meaningful teaching and learning process. One of the ways to increase studentsâ reading comprehension and writing achievement is by the use of paraphrasing strategy in the classroom instruction. Through the application of the paraphrasing strategy, it is easy for the students to internalize the information of the original source comprehensively; thus, studentsâ reading comprehension achievement is increased. In relation to the improvement of studentsâ reading comprehension achievement, studentsâ writing achievement is also increased by the use of paraphrasing strategy since the students can rewrite the text in to their own writing style. Therefore, the use of paraphrasing strategy is considered as one of the beneficial ways used to enhance studentsâ reading comprehension and writing achievement.]]>

<![CDATA[Nowadays, the advanced technology widely makes different ways to learn English grammar. This study is aimed to analyze academic writing via blog posting in grammatical aspects. It is involved 11 students of English Language Teaching Department which have 18 articles published on English blog. Therefore, the data were collected through observation and documentation by Creswellâs model. To display all of the results the writer used chart in grammatical analysis. The result of this study had been classified into four common errors, namely concord with 47% error items, word order with 33% error items, spelling with 14% error items, and parallel structure with 6% error items. <![CDATA[Abstract: Collocation is used by most of the native speaker in both writing and speaking authentic English. This paper focused on knowing the studentsâ collocation knowledge by examining their lexical and grammatical collocation performance in their argumentative writing. This research, therefore, conducted by analyzing deeply 10 argumentative writings of the third semester students of PBI STAIN JuraiSiwo Metro in academic year 2013/2014. The result of this research showed that there were 41 % errors found in both lexical collocation (25%) and grammatical collocation (16 %) in the studentsâ argumentative writing. It clearly means that studentsâ collocation knowledge still need to be improved. Hence, teachers have an important role to play down the error in applying collocation]]>

<![CDATA[The objectives of the research are to examine: (1) whether Content-Based Instruction is more effective than Audio-Lingual Method to teach speaking to the third semester students of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2012/2013; (2) whether the students having high creativity have better speaking skill than those having low creativity; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and studentsâ creativity in teaching speaking. The method in this research was experimental study. It was conducted at the third semester students of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2012/2013. The sample of the research was two classes; C consists of 40 students as an experimental class and E consists of 40 students as a control class. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. Each class was divided into two groups (the students having high and low creativity). The techniques of collecting data were creativity test and speaking test that were tried out to know their readability. The data were analyzed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test of 2 x 2 and Tukey test.The result of data analysis shows that: (1) Content-Based Instruction is more effective than Audio-Lingual Method to teach speaking (2) the students having high creativity have better speaking skill than the students having low creativity and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and studentsâ creativity in teaching speaking. <![CDATA[This paper is titled âGrammatical Error Analysis of Studentsâ Comment Writing Based on Facebook Game in English Intensive Class of STAIN JURAI SIWO METRO 2013â. The aim of this research is to describe grammatical errors which are made by the students of English Intensive Class. It is a qualitative-descriptive research. The data are taken from the result of studentsâ comment writing on Facebook game in English intensive class. Meanwhile, the techniques to collect the data used note and observation. The result is displayed in words. <![CDATA[This descriptive-qualitative research investigated the modulation phenomena and measured the accuracy level of the phenomena occurring in the translated text. It involved 40 students at the fifth semester of English education program in STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. The data were taken from each participantâs translated texts using observation and documentation. The kinds of text are scientific and literary texts. Both texts contain 20 modulation phenomena. All of the phenomena were analyzed by comparing the proper translation text with the translated text produced by the students and then measured in the term of accuracy level. The researcher found 11 Fixed Modulation (FM) and 9 Optional Modulation (OM). In the term of accuracy, the FM is more accurate than OM but OM has a lower inaccurate level than FM has. Related to the accuracy percentage of all phenomena, there are 16% categorized as accurate, 39% as less accurate, and 45% as inaccurate. In conclusion, the students are still lack of the accuracy in modulation so that they should be able to let themselves free from influential factors of the source language structure and to express natural and equivalent translation in target language]]>

<![CDATA[Abstract: The researchers offer some techniques to be applied in speaking class; they are STAD and TGT technique. The problem formulations of this research are; (1) Is there any difference influence of STAD and TGT techniques toward studentsâ speaking performance at tenth grade of SMA N 1 Pagar Dewa?; (2) Which one is more effective between STAD and TGT techniques toward studentsâ speaking ability at tenth grade of SMA N 1 Pagar Dewa?. The research design of this research is True Experimental Design. The population of this research is all of the students of SMA N 1 Pagar Dewa which consists of eighteen classes with total students are 544 students. The researchers take 58 students from the total population as the sample, where 29 students are in experiment class and 29 students are in control class that be matched based on the students level of speaking ability. The researchers use Cluster Stratified Random Sampling as technique of sampling. To analyze data, the researchers use ttest formula. Based on the result of this research and the result of criteria of the hypothesis on the table, the result shows that tCount = 2,8126; moreover the researcher looked at ttable for α = 1% shows ttble = 2.70 and for α = 5% shows ttable = 2.02 or it means tcount>ttable. It is obtained that Ha is accepted while Ho is rejected. It means that there is the difference influence of STAD and TGT technique toward studentsâ speaking ability and also it means that STAD technique is more effective than TGT technique toward studentsâ speaking ability. But as the conclusion, both of these techniques are effective to be applied in teaching speaking for the SMA N 1 Pagar Dewa.Keywords: STAD Techniqe, TGT Technique, Speaking Ability]]>

<![CDATA[Abstract: Cigarette advertising A-Mild brand brings an intelligent and critical condition of society. A mild ad-was unique and entertaining. This study aimed to describe forms of diction and meaning a reference in A Mild cigarette advertising discourse of âTanya Kenapa edition. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is a fragment of A Mild cigarette advertising discourse of Tanya Kenapaâ edition.The results showed that the meaning of the image and text advertisement serving A-Mild do not have ideological ties, stable and secure, even ironical. The effects of humor or absurdity resulting from distortion or play on an existing expression. Sampoerna A Mild invites customers to not hesitate be critical of the various phenomena that occur in the community.
