Three decades ago, philosophy as an object of investigation was still unlawful religiously among the santris and even among some Muslim university students in Indonesia. That is no longer the case now. Following the coming of some open-minded religious discourses in the country especially that which was brought about by a well-known scholar named Harun Nasution, the study of philosophy became lawful and even promising. This paper speaks about this phenomenon by looking at the evolution of the study of philosophy âespecially the philosophy of science- in the academic study in Indonesia. Within the framework of evolution theory, the paper also tries to discuss how the study of this science evolves from a sheer Western-based study to include the Qurâanic perspective of it. This paper itself is a study of the Qurâanic perspective concerning the philosophy of science. And by doing that, it tries to show that this kind of study has become a trend in academic circle in Indonesia.

The history of Muslims in different part of the world has shown that the religion of Islam is disseminated through various form of dakwah ranging from music, rites, and even dance. The medium of dakwah has always changed depending on the nature and character of the society in which Islam is propagated. In Indonesia for example, the Javanese music called Gamelan was used by the Nine-saints to carry out their dakwah activities. This paper tries to discuss this. It is aimed at answering the question of what is the extent to which the medium of dakwah is being used in a particular propagation activity, and what would be the implication on the dissemination of Islam in using this medium. The paper is particularly interested in investigating what it calls the cyberdakwah, namely dakwah by means of modern technology such as the internet and the like. It asks, what are the positive and negative implications of this way of dakwah for Islam and community at large? As the paper tries to come up with the answer for the question, it keeps in mind the fact that the cyberdakwah reflects the adaptive ability of the Muslims in carrying out their dakwah activities.

In Arabic Satan means an enemy, one who is distant, misled, burnt, disowned from the grace of God and displaced from His mercy. He is so distant that he cannot any longer hear and know the truth. He is so arrogant that he became the victim of his own attitude. In the Qurâan the word Satan is always mentioned in its concrete from (maârifah) which means that the existence and threat of the Satan is true and real. This also means that Satan is created solely to mischief man on his earthly life and mislead him from the grace of God. Different views however have been expressed to the extent that the creation of the Satan may also be understood as an indication of Godâs mercy upon His creation especially human being. If it is not because of Satan, human being would not be able to distinguish between good and vice. And it is exactly because of Satan that human being âupon his success to avoid his deceive- may be raised to the higher status as human being. This paper is concerned with this controversy and with the logical implication that emerges thereof. It is ultimately about tracing the Qurâanic and prophetic notion of what Satan is, and what it means to be human.

In the social theory of religion, it is commonly believed that the inner aspect of man such as religious experience does have a role in shaping his outer, namely external dimension. How one behaves is a result of his/her inner state. Oneâs attitude is none other than the manifestation of his/her religiousness. On that basis, this paper argues that the spirit of entrepreneurship that one has within him/her is the result of his/her faith âand also understanding- of his/her religion. The paper holds that it is religion that drives one to be an entrepreneur. The Islamic world-view concerning the dynamics of life for instance, has been the major source of inspiration for many youngsters to do business. This paper therefore deals with some Islamic teachings concerning life such as worldly well-being, free will and the value of work before God. The paper however also discovers that although Islam has a lot to say concerning business, only few Muslims made use of its teaching do develop what can be called Islamic entrepreneurship. Â

Although Syariâah is considered by many as the ideal form of socialâas well as financial- order, it is nonetheless not immune from practical and perhaps technical problems, so to speak. With regards to the Syariâah finance, cases on the ground show that transaction involving dispute by different parties does often occur. This dispute has nothing to do with the Syariâah itself indeed, but with the way it is applied. Syariâah however anticipates this dispute to happen, concerning which this paper is interested. It is concerned with discussing this anticipation and in what way does Syariâah offer the way-out to resolve such a dispute in matters relating to financial contract. The paper argues that the ability of such system as Syariâah to resolve problems and offer solution for disputes can be an indicator whether the system can be judged as an ideal or not. One of the techniques that the Syariâah has offered in dealing with dispute is what it calls Musyawarah (negotiation); a technique that in fact has been regulated in the Indonesian law. This technique will also be investigated in this paper.

Market has always been part of development in Indonesia and in any country in that matter. How far development will succeed depends very much therefore on the nature of market. Well-managed market will certainly affect the process of development. This paper deals with the relationship between market and development with particular attention to the notion of justice. It argues that in Indonesia economic injustice is the main cause for the failure of development for many decades. The paper tries to show the many indicators of that injustice which includes among others, the unequal distribution of wealth among the citizens. The paper then moves to the economic system of Islam which âit argues- is based on the concept of justice, and maintains that this Islamic system can be both the solution and alternative for the ailing Indonesian economy.

This paper is aimed at discussing the notion of endowment as a form of investment. Like any other kinds of investment, endowment needs a proper management especially that which is related to risk. Hence, the subject of this paper is risk management for money endowment, i.e., endowment in the form of money. A lack of proper management will certainly lead to the unsuccessful investment such as the ineffective cash-flow which occurs as a result of inflation. The paper argues that the unsuccessful endowment is often the victim of its own ineffective management, or else of its inefficient managers. Many endowments have no managers and management, the result of which being that it cannot be sustained and made use of. While the Syariâah banking has improved dramatically in many Muslim countries, and has been run professionally, the paper asks, why is it not the case with the endowment sector?

This paper deals with the notion of Sunna according to one of the most leading contemporary Muslim thinkers, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd. The paper explores both his view concerning the Sunna, and his methodology of how to understand it. The paper discovers that the man does find in the Sunna a kind of flexibility that makes it open for new understanding and application within new context. His conception of the Sunna can be found in his ideas concerning the nature, position, validity and the interpretation of religious text. Given that the Sunna comes only second after the Qurâan, the former must therefore be interpreted in the light of the latter. The paper tries to show that what is interesting about studying Abu Zayd is his view to transform the Islamic religious texts from merely mythological narratives into a logical and living tradition.

This paper poses a question whether Syariâah can be adopted as a regional/provincial law in Indonesia or not? The question has many sides. First, the many provinces in Indonesia have different religious and cultural setting, making them varied in their reception not only to Syariâah but also to Islam itself. Even the province where Muslims are majority, Syariâah is not always ready to apply. Second, the formalization of Syariâah has provoked an uneasy response from many non-Muslims and also from many Muslims who are not happy with the formalization of Syariâah. Third, the provincial law has thus far been good in some provinces, giving no chance for the Syariâah law to interfere. It is these problems that this paper is concerned with. Some aspects of the Syariâah criminal law that many have attempted to be formalized will be discussed here such as the law of fornication, of drugs and beer, of prostitution, and of religious transgression.

This paper tries to trace and analyze the roots ofâIslamic transnationalismâ or âtransnational Islamâ in Indonesia through the lens of the three theoretical frameworks that I borrowed from Mandaville as follows: (1) travelling theory; (2) hibridity theory, and; (3) diasphora theory. The paper focuses its analysis on an Islamic movement who carries the ideology of âIslamic transnationalismâ (khilâ fah Islâmiyah), namely Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). Before delving into the details of HTIâs ideological roots of transnational Islam, however, a conceptual definition of âtransnational Islamâ will be elucidated in advance.
