Abstract

This research explores the complex dimensions of sanitation issues, particularly focusing on the systematic structural transformation needed for long-term and resilient changes in achieving equitable access to clean water and sanitation. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study draws insights from the case of West Java, exemplifying challenges arising from geographical conditions, industrial waste exposure, and limited public understanding. Emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies, the research underscores the significance of participatory deliberative democracy, as advocated by Jurgen Habermas, in addressing sanitation complexities. The findings reveal the necessity for a holistic and sustainable approach to sanitation policies, actively involving marginalized communities in decision-making processes. By examining successful grassroots initiatives and adopting a collaborative, affordable, and socially aware model, the study recommends a comprehensive strategy to integrate sanitation improvements into broader poverty alleviation and property security agendas. Ultimately, the research emphasizes the importance of societal collaboration, affordable solutions, and a nuanced understanding of socio-economic issues in addressing sanitation challenges in informal settlements.

Abstract

Abstract

Australia makes the Pacific region a fundamental interest to defend its national interests. This commitment was made by launching a Pacific 'step-up' foreign policy in 2018 based on the 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper. Foreign policy decision-making is caused by external factors and internal factors. These external factors stem from the growing strategic competition between the United States and China in the Pacific as well as China's increasing influence that could shift Australia's influence as a traditional Pacific partner. Meanwhile, the internal factors stem from the perception of Australia's political elite towards the Chinese threat and public opinion that supports government intervention in the Pacific. The merger of external and internal factors prompted Australia to take action in 'balancing'. This is because the United States and China are partners in national interests, so the choice to establish relations with Pacific Island Countries (PIC) is the right choice. Meanwhile, the Australian government's efforts to counter the Chinese threat and the Australian Government's support for providing assistance to the Pacific helped drive the policy. The problem is studied by using the policy-making theory of Graham T. Allison and the concept of neoclassical realism to look at the process of Australian foreign policy-making related to changes in the rules-based order and domestic conditions of Australia. The method used in this study uses a qualitative approach. The results of this study show that Pacific ‘step-up’ foreign policy is capable of defending Australia's national interests

Abstract

This article examines the failure of the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) to address racism in the world of football. UEFA has enacted a number of rules to prevent and reduce racist acts in football matches. Facts show that racist acts, especially those carried out by supporters, during 2013 to 2019 actually increased. This article tries to answer the question of why the UEFA regime is ineffective in dealing with the problem of racism in the world of football. The analysis was carried out by borrowing the theory of regime effectiveness developed by Arild Underdal. The author collected data by literature study method. The results of the analysis show that the UEFA regime is ineffective in dealing with racist acts in football matches in Europe because: (1) the problem of racism originates outside the world of football so it is impossible to solve it by football organizations alone; (2) the perpetrator of racism is the supporter, while UEFA rules cannot be applied to the supporter; (3) the interests of UEFA members are not aligned with each other, making it difficult to achieve collaboration; and (4) the governing organs do not have the required capacity.

Abstract

The freedom of Saudi women is inseparable from the role of Prince Muhammad Bin Salman as the crown prince of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the freedom of Saudi women is one form of manifestation of social reform that has been planned since the reign of King Abdullah which was then realized during the leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud through the Arab Vision 2030 initiated by Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. Arab Vision 2030 has succeeded in realizing the demands of Saudi women regarding gender equality, where this equality has been seen with the existence of women who have been allowed to drive and have a personal driver's license without having to ask permission from their guardians. In addition, Saudi women have also been allowed to participate and be involved in politics, are also allowed to choose jobs and build their own businesses and women are also allowed to obtain education up to college with freedom in choosing majors. In this study, the author uses conceptual theories, namely political system theory and legitimacy needs, where this theory will explain the objectives of the study. For the method used, namely the explanatory method with a qualitative research type.

Abstract

Indonesia's nickel downstream policy represents a strategic shift in its natural resource governance, characterized by its focus on adding value to raw nickel through domestic processing. We propose a securitisation/resource security framework to perspective to understand Indonesia's nickel downstream policy. Securitisation of natural resource is a process in which the government frames natural resources as an existential threat to state interests, which varies in nature and is highly dependent on certain conditions. This policy arises when natural resource problems can have an impact on economic security, regime security and/or geopolitical problems in a country. From the perspective of securitisation, the nickel downstream policy is one of the Indonesian government's responses to the perception of threats to economic security, regime/government security and security from geopolitical threats that arise both from the domestic and international levels. The research reveals that the Indonesian government has strategically employed securitization narratives to justify the measures, such as the export ban on raw nickel. These narratives highlight the critical role of nickel in driving economic growth, securing regime legitimacy, and navigating geopolitical competition in the context of the global clean energy transition. By integrating insights from securitisation theory, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how natural resources are constructed as security issues in developing economies. It underscores the need for balancing economic and geopolitical ambitions with environmental and social considerations, offering a framework for analysing resource policies amid global energy transitions and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
