Abstract

Most students of English Education Program in STKIP PGRI Ponorogo can be considered as nontraditional students with family, work, and other life responsibilities which have many influences on their educational goals. Autonomous learning is a customized way of learning applied by individual to find out his own learning needs and learning goals, decide the most appropriate way for his own learning, as well as to monitor and evaluate the learning progress. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The primary techniques in data collection were questionnaire, and interview. In general, the most influential motivation for the students was internal motivation. Advisor’s availability, text book, internet, supportive atmosphere, self discipline, cozy and quiet place, and early morning were among the students’ choices for their autonomous learning. They frequently used music, film, video, essay, and smart phone application in their study. In general, the nontraditional students with high achievement were often felt easy to understand the material especially when it was delivered in relatively “easy” language, expressed their opinion bravely, and patient in doing their tasks. They considered friends, best friends, and lecturer as people who were capable to help them in doing autonomous learning

Abstract

Politeness is defined as language use or communication in order to avoid humiliation of both speaker and hearer. Deference refers to the use of language to show respect after considering aspects that urge the speaker to do so. The goal of deference is to satisfy the hearer (facesatisfying act). Deference and politeness are sometimes mixed up between one another (Aziz, 2008). The Principle of Mutual Consideration is offered by Aziz (2008)to complete the existing politeness theory. It is based on the causality law, which means a speaker should consider the result that may occur that is caused by her/his utterance. This article investigated politeness through the Principle of Mutual Consideration on puppet show entitled Kitab Sastra Jendra Rahayu Ningrat by puppet master Asep Sunandar Sunarya. The result shows that Sundanese shows politeness through the terms of addressee and the undak-usuk basa (deference). However, since it is a performing art, harm potentials is frequently and most obviously occurred. Keywords: politeness, face, Principle of Mutual Consideration

This study was implementing characteristic of a case study. The data were obtained through observation of class interaction and interview. The data were analyzed descriptively and interpreted to answer the research question. The study revealed two findings related to research questions. First, two types of anxiety were evidenced, i.e. trait anxiety and state/situational anxiety. Second, the students’ anxiety in English speaking class was derived from three main sources of anxiety, i.e. communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. Moreover, as the interview data revealed, lack of vocabularies and lack of preparation have also contributed to students’ anxiety in speaking. These findings suggest that the teacher should be more aware of students’ anxiety in order to arouse students’ motivation to speak up confidently and fluently in an English speaking class. As such, teachers are urged to be fairly creative in devising better technique that could encourage the students to speak more. Keywords: anxiety, speaking English, factor of anxiety
