Abstract

The constraint of cattle development in Indonesia is low productivity, which was caused by low reproduction efficiency. Unestroes and difficulty of heat detection influenced to the calving interval. This calving interval is one of the causal factors of low reproduction efficiency. The efforts to solve this problem are to control and to predict heat period using synchronization technology. Synchronization technology on catlle has been developed from corpus luteum enucleated, utilizing of gonadotropin, progesteron, estrogen, prostaglandine and modification of those hormones. Application method for synchronization could be done by intra musculair, subcutan implantation, intra vaginal and mixed with food. Each method has its own strength and weaknesses. However, to handle anestroes cases is more effective to use combination of progesteron, PGF2α and estrogen. In order to obtain reproduction efficiency it is suggested to take the anestroes in hand as soon as possible.   Key words : Cattle, synchronization estrous

Abstract

Turi (Sesbania grandiflora) belongs to the family of Leguminoseae. It is potential to be developed as a feedstuff since it has a high protein content. However, it has some obstacles as it contains many anti-nutritive compounds, such as canavanine, trypsin inhibitor, saponin, tannin and alkaloids. There are many methods to remove these compounds such as by making protein concentrate and dehulling seed coat. Protein concentrate preparation gave a low yield (3.9% from original stuff). More over, the unwanted compounds only being reduced and not eliminated. Whereas dehulling process (approximately 35-40% from the whole grain) reduced more of these compounds. Dehulling seed coat is suggested to be fed to the non-ruminants.   Key words : Turi (Sesbania grandiflora), anti-nutritive compounds, protein concentrate, dehulling process

Abstract

Local feed-stuffs can be used to formulate diet for native chickens. The utilization of a feed ingredient should consider some factors such as the quantity available, nutrient compositions, price and limiting factors such as anti-nutrient or toxins that exist in the feed ingredient. Some potential local feed ingredients that can be used for native chickens are rice bran, cassava and its  by-product,  coconut  meal,  soybean  curd waste,  palm  oil  by-products,  shrimp  head  and  snail.  Research  results  on  the utilization of these ingredients in poultry feed are discussed in this paper. The application of the research results to make feed for native chickens required knowledge on diet formulation that includes the nutrient requirement for the chickens, calculation methods and techniques for mixing feed.   Key words: Native chickens, local feedstuffs, nutrient composition, nutrient requirement

Abstract

Outbreak of encephalitis, which killed more than 80 people in Malaysia, invited public attention throughout the world, especially  stakeholders  in  animal husbandry  and  veterinary  practices.  The  disease  was initially  diagnosed as Japanese-B- encephalitis (JE) which was transmitted to human from infected pigs. Recently, the causal agent of the outbreak has been identified as morbilivirus which was called Hendra-like Virus or Nipah Virus. Indonesia as neighboring country to Malaysia needs to take anticipation to prevent the occurrence of similar outbreak. For anticipation, it is required to understand all diseases, which cause encephalitis, especially the zoonotic diseases. From many infectious diseases of animal, only 17 diseases which are able to cause encephalitis, 9 of them are zoonotic diseases: Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE), Western equine encephalomyelitis   (WEE),   Venezuelan   equine   encephalomyelitis   (VEE),   Japanese-B-encephalitis   (JE),   Murray   valley encephalitis (MVE), Louping-ill, Rabies and Equine morbilivirus (EMV) and Nipah Virus. The viral agents and the mode of transmission to human are discussed in this publication. All those encephalitic zoonoses, except Rabies and JE, are exotic to Indonesia. So it is required to keep the free status of Indonesia to those diseases by strict quarantine measures. All imported animals to Indonesia should be confirmed free from those diseases based on the laboratory examination.   Key words: Encephalitis, zoonosis, nipah virus

Abstract

Among the various toxic elements, heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, and Hg are commonly present in the environment. These metals have  no  biological  function  in  the  animal,  but  their presence  in  tissues  reflect  contact  of  the  organism  with  its environment. Studies of the toxicity mechanism of these elements in the biological systems of the animals are important especially interaction between them and some essential dietari elements like Ca, Zn, Fe, Se, and Cu. In general a deficiency from one of the essential element increases toxicity of heavy metals, whereas an excess appears to be protective. These suggest that dietary presence of the essential elements may to protection of animal from the effects of heavy metal exposure. Addition of essential elements in the diet can be used for the treatment of heavy metal toxicity.   Key words : Toxic metals, essential metals, interaction

Abstract

Several by product of sugar cane can be utilized as roughage. So that cooperation between sugar processing industries and beefcattle industries is enable to enhance. In Indonesia, about 4.62 million ton sugar cane tops, 1 .98 million ton klentekan and 1.32 million ton sugar sogolan can be obtained each year. By product of sugar processing can yield bagasse, blotong and molasses . All of these by products are potential as substitute for common forage in ruminants particularly during a relatively long dry season as long as protein sources are provided. Abstract

Sulphurous is one of the important mineral that essential for. the living organism. For the animals, sulphurous (S) has a positive correlation with the nitrogen retention. Beside that, S is one of the essential component for methionine, and the methionine could be found in all of hormonal and enzymatic compounds and also in could be detected in all of the cell of the animal . For example, to continue the reproduction activities, animals need S for synthesizing reproduction hormones, ovulation and spermatogenesis. Fortunately for ruminants, because they could yield protein as a cycle of the ruminal activities. The prerequisite of this processif the branch C-frame is available for energy resources or C-frame from microorganism protein, S and ammonia (NH3). All of the components would work in synchronizing to build the protein. S could be supply from organic and inorganic materials and would be harvested from fermented protein in the nimen. 3lme materials from plants are generally containing low S especially for legumes and oily seeds, and also depend on the S contained under land where the plant is growth. In addition, S also has a synergistic with P, Mg and Co and antagonistic with the Cu and Se. S is also as one of important component in biotin and thiamine that have a role in periver neural systemic, tract digestive, cardiovascular systemic and the thiamine it self also has a special function for beri-beri medicine. Abstract

Dairy cattle and beef cattle industrial development have not fulfilled consumption requirement in Indonesia. Indonesia has imported milk since the beginning of Pelita I (Five years planning of Indonesian development). Once Indonesia was able to export beef, but a now days beefis being imported, and continue to increase every year. There are four factors need to be considered (1) the dairy and beef cattle form which has been raised separately, should be raised jointly and developed with "dual purpose" cattle, (2) livestock production system, should be carried as commercial enterprise, (3) application of appropriate technologies, (4) develop proper marketing in line with production system. Abstract

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a fatal viral disease of cattle, buffalo and other ruminants characterized by proliferation and infiltration of lymphocytes and followed by necroses of infected organs . According to the aetiological of the agents, MCFis classified into two types: wildebeest-associatedMCF(WA-MCF) which is caused by Alcelaphinae herpesvirus-1 (AHV-1) and sheep-associated MCF (SA-MCF) which is caused by Ovine herpesvirus-2 (OHV-2). Most MCF cases in Indonesia is SA-MCF. Due to the intact virus of SA-MCF has not been able isolated, the diagnosis of this disease is based on the clinical signs and pathological changes. However, a segment of DNA virus of SA-MCF has been isolated from MCF cases in rabbit, deer, and cattle which provided an opportunity to study a DNA sequencing and led to the development of diagnostic technique based on the molecular biology, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The PCR technique was able to detect segments of DNA of SA-MCF virus in infected organs . This publication describes the application of PCR for diagnosis of SA-MCF in  Indonesia. Abstract

Toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is reported to be endemic throughout most of the Indonesian archipelago . The prevalence rates of 24-61% in goats, 10-40% in cats, 28% in pigs, 43% in sheep, 36% in cattle, 27% in buffalo, 20% in chickens, 6% in ducks, 10% in dogs and 14-82% in human were reported in Indonesia. The disease causes abortion in pregnant women. The importance of toxoplasmosis in Indonesia; the aspects of etiology, clinical signs, pathology, transmission and control measures are discussed in this paper.
